http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Aerial1948.jpg Historic Aerials I found this March 1953 picture on LAPL. It shows the new Hollywood Freeway looking south, and includes the northwest corner of the block we're discussing at the far left. I wish the picture extended a little further left so we could see the Rollerbowl/Stardust building. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...dFwySunset.jpg LAPL This 1972 image shows how the Hollywood Freeway changed a square block into a triangle. It looks like the area to the left of the Rollerbowl building was completely cleared, although some of residences on De Longre Avenue survive. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Aerial1972.jpg Historic Aerials I've skipped forward to 2004 to show how the Home Depot building shares none of its footprint with the old Rollerbowl/Stardust building. By comparing the images on Historic Aerials with the historical images on Google Earth, it appears that the Rollerbowl/Stardust building was demolished between 1980 and 1989. The Home Depot building was built sometime between 1994 and 2002. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Aerial2004.jpg Historic Aerials |

The Royal Palms Apts. 1419 S. Wilton Place.*
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/674/qPwfgX.jpg http://photos.lapl.org/carlweb/jsp/F...olNumber=30521 I found this at 1419 S. Wilton Place, so I was pretty bummed. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...911/AuZaQp.jpg GSV ..but as I turned the google-mobile around I noticed an apartment building down the street. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...909/9jhiGB.jpg GSV Sure enough....it was the Royal Palms. :) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...746/eI7G3a.jpg GSV This Royal Palms not to be confused with the old Royal Palms Hotel on Westlake. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=19289 and the Westlake Royal Palms was originally the Concordia Club, an exclusive Jewish club. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=19290 __ * I went back and double checked the library archive, the address is now listed as 1518 South Wilton Place. (I swear it said 1419 when I saved it to my file) __ |

Removing watermarks is one of HossC's many talents. The vintage b/w aerials are 100% better with out the obtrusive diagonal watermarks. __ |

So is that fine looking building the Hotel Decatur, or is the Hotel Decatur out of view on the right? (with only the sign visible)
Now that I've looked at the photo a little longer, I can see a diagonal guy-wire tethered to the Hotel Decatur sign. -so I guess it's on the right. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/j5rXxa.jpg ebay I wasn't sure why there was a giant horseshoe on the building until I found this. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/bETifv.jpg http://www.westland.net/venicehistor...les/mdpier.htm Here's the left half of the photograph. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/674/fNmIl4.jpg complete http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...538/ErPhMW.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...539/s00Nol.jpgebay ___ |

__ I came across this rather bleak looking slide earlier today on ebay. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...540/c2OIMY.jpgebay I'm curious about the white building on the right. Does anyone know what building that is? Notice how the railroad tracks come within a few feet of it's front door. Here's a detail http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/539/YK2sXF.jpg __ |
