The other day I found a collection of pictures on USC titled "Aerial views from Goodyear blimp (Paegel), 1955" (the description indicates they're from late '54). I don't think we've seen them on NLA before. There are 22 pictures altogether, some beautifully clear, while others disappear into smog. They cover various locations from Santa Monica to the Colorado Bridge with some nice DTLA shots along the way.
The first one I picked out shows a view looking across the Civic Center. The Hill Street tunnel is still there on the left, as are some other buildings close to demolition like the International Savings & Exchange Bank Building/Bank of Italy and the Amestoy Block near City Hall. There are so many more details when you zoom in - I'd highly recommend clicking the link below the picture to explore for yourself. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original USC Digital Library I tried to replicate the view as closely as possible using Google Earth. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Google Earth There's so much to look at in this picture, I could study it all day. On the left are some old favorites like the Rex Arms and the Sunkist building and the Jonathan Club. Moving across we see the 4th Street Viaduct project in its early days with Stuart K. Oliver's house overseeing the work. Across the Harbor Freeway there's a building between 3rd and Miramar that's signed "TANNER GRAY LINE". In the lower right corner you can see 3rd Street emerging from underneath Hope Street, and the recently discussed Rollin, Bozwell, St Regis, Marcella and Winton on Flower Street. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original USC Digital Library The same view today - it's hard to spot the difference similarity. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...E.jpg~original Google Earth The last view I've chosen shows roughly the same area, but looking in a different direction. As well as the apartment buildings/hotels on Flower, this picture also shows the Clift, the La Salle and the President at Figueroa and Second. NB. I've tweaked the levels to even out the contrast. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original USC Digital Library Near the bottom of the picture is the 800 block of W Third. The photo must've been taken around the time that Stanley Kubrick was filming The Killing. Here's a close-up showing the Lux and Eddie's Loans (complete with the just readable "Money To Loan" sign). On the corner is the Fig Leaf Cafe. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...ill2a_1954.jpg Detail of picture above. I know the aspect ratio is different to the USC picture, but I've tried to cover the same area with the view below. The only extant building I spotted from the aerial above is the Central Health Center at 241 N Figueroa - are there any others? http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...E.jpg~original Google Earth |

West boulevard bridge...los angeles
Hi guys and a good Monday to you all. I'm going to post a couple of new links for you to enjoy today. I did a couple of pieces on the West Boulevard Bridge which turned 80 years old in 2013. I grew up in the shadow of this bridge and never really knew a whole lot about it. However, when doing this piece and meeting with the historian who also appears, I was shocked to find out one major reason WHY this bridge was put in place. The West Boulevard Bridge is a bit of a rarity in that it is located in a relatively urban area of the city. Most of our major bridges are located downtown like the 6th Street and 7th Street Bridges which are very well known. This is one of my favorite pair of shows and I think you all will enjoy them as well. There are few historic photos in the piece (mostly show #2 if I recall), but these are good ones. I really love this bridge's architecture and the lighting is my favoite. BTW-Since this piece aired, a buddy of mine and I got that "Gumball" light under the bridge operational again. We're still pushing to have the lantern on the side of it replaced as well.

:previous: Well done Engine54. I didn't know about the accident that claimed the lives of 15 people back in 1913.

Thanks for the videos about the West Boulevard Bridge, Chin/Engine54. You could have been a little nicer to your guest. When Mitzi March Mogul says "I remember Downtown when it was filled with old mansions. It was fantastic.", you put up a picture of Bunker Hill from Central Park dated "circa 1900". I'm sure Mitzi was remembering a much later date :).
Here's a picture of the bridge which USC date at 1940. The full picture can be seen in my post about the Pico & Rimpau Loop. Taken just seven years after the bridge was built, it looks like the sidewalk on the east side had already been reduced to its current width. The original stairs between Venice and Southwest Boulevards can be seen just right of the bridge. I wonder if Dr. Marxmiller was still in the same house when this picture was taken. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...0.jpg~original Detail of picture in USC Digital Library |

Have we visited the Thaddeus Lowe house on NLA? I wasn't able to find any earlier posts.

According to Wikipedia, Sapolio was a brand of soap which died out soon after the owners decided it was well known enough that they didn't need to advertise any more. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ement_1907.jpg Wikipedia |
Returning to West Boulevard Bridge, I believe this is one of the images that was used in Engine54's videos. It shows the demolition of the original, temporary bridge. It doesn't look like there was much room for automobile traffic on the left. If you zoom in, you can seen the name "Vineyard" on the large pole in the center.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...lvdBridge1.jpg USC Digital Library Like the picture above, this one is also dated vaguely at 1930-1960. I'd say that everything looks pretty new, and there's no moving traffic, so I'm guessing it's quite early. You have to look harder for the "Vineyard" sign in this picture - it's on the first pole after the bridge. It's a shame that the dividing wall, which matched the design of the bridge, has been replaced by a wire fence. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...lvdBridge2.jpg USC Digital Library |
Here's an amazing glass slide I found earlier this evening on ebay.
