One cute fact about ours: it inspired the construction of St. Patrick's in New York. When their Bishop came to the consecration of our church, he was awed and decided if "a few thousand fishermen can erect such a grand Basilica, than surely all the Irish in New York can as well".

(Your impression is correct about most of the historic buildings here - but there are a few spectacular ones, like the Colonial Building, Supreme Court, etc.)

Brossard is one of those names that sounds beautiful in French and hideous when pronounced in English. Like Genevieve and Lagimodiere.

FrAnKs Nov 23, 2013 2:29 PM

I would have said Longueuil aswell. Anglophones seems to never be able to pronounce it the french way. It always turns out like : Long-el, Long-weel, Longwell

lol

I disagree. Brossard sounds hideous in French as well. The name's ugly in both official languages, actually. Incidentally, the city's aesthetics live up to its name.

Is it more Long-yuye? (That's my desparate attempt to spell how I pronounce it)

franktko Nov 23, 2013 3:14 PM

You can listen to it in Google. They actually pronounce it correctly!

Agreed. Brossard is actually slowly joining Longueuil and Laval as a joke when urban Montrealers are mocking the 450 subburbs. And it's often pronounces in a forced accent to makes it sound more hillbillies. Something like "Bro- sawr".

franktko Nov 23, 2013 4:11 PM

Ignore the first 'u'. To an Anglo I'd say it's probably more like Long-gey.

(There are a few cases in French -- words like "accueil" -- where the u is completely silent. To a French speaker the words accueil and akeuil (which is not a word) would be pronounced the same.)

Wow thanks for those Kitchener pics and the construction news! I would really appreciate a pic or two of the construction sites in the "Construction Sites" thread! :D Great news. Those will be, respectively, the first and second tallest in Kitchener, right?

I have friends who tell me that French has messed up spellings, and I like to respond that English is worse (they are just more familiar with it), but actually this particular sound is messed up:

oeuf
Longeuil
queue

But "eu" can also make a different sound (e.g. "j'ai eu").

To add to this confusion, the sound doesn't exist in most English dialects.

Great pics!

One Victoria (19 stories) might be a new tallest for Kitchener, but at 17 stories, I think there are a number of apartment buildings that will be taller than City Centre. I will be interested to see what, if any, impact these two have on the Downtown skyline - the topography of Downtown has the effect of flattening out the modest skyline when viewed from most angles. You can see the effect in advance62's fifth pic - the apartment tower just to the left of the "Dolly Parton" is 18 stories, while the brown brick tower to the left of the pic is, I think, 15 or 16 stories.
