I don't think we're going to have a mega casino on Hudson Yards. A possible casino may occupy a part of the site. Look at the proposals for a casino made in Chicago. :)

Proposed casino at Hudson Yards would face political hurdles

By Bobby Cuza Manhattan
Sep. 16, 2022

Quote:

The proposal to build a casino at the Hudson Yards development on Manhattan’s west side has its advantages.

There’s plenty of room to build it on the currently undeveloped western portion of the site. The developer, chaired by billionaire Stephen Ross, has significant clout.

The hard part could be to win over local elected officials.
Quote:

But bidders must win approval from four of the six members of a community advisory committee. That committee will comprise representatives of the mayor, governor and local elected officials.

With Hudson Yards, that would include Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, who said in an interview Friday, “I don’t think a casino belongs in Manhattan.”

Gottfried is retiring at the end of the year, so any decision-making would likely fall to his successor. But others also have concerns.

In particular, they note Related’s prior commitments on the site.

“We were promised years ago when that project first launched a school, affordable housing, open space,” Hoylman said. “So we’re not willing to relinquish any of that.”

A Related spokesman said those elements would still be included in the development, even if the casino goes forward.

Quote:

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, who would also have a say on the advisory committee, is keeping an open mind.

“I think being located next to Javits is a potential benefit, in that this could support trade shows at Javits,” he said.

Mayor Eric Adams did not weigh in on the Hudson Yards proposal this week, but a spokesman said, “The gaming commission will decide on where these casinos will be located, but we are hoping two of the three downstate casinos will be placed in New York City.”

The Hudson Yards casino would also have to go through the city’s arduous land-use process — another layer of approvals that would test the political influence of Ross, a major donor to Gov. Kathy Hochul and others.

“This needs to be a process that’s not influenced by political considerations,” Levine said. “This needs to be a process in which we weigh a proposal on the merits.”

It’ll probably be a few months before we see Related’s actual proposal. But I’m guessing the casino would go on the one commercial site, just accross from 35 Hudson.

The state should have put the casino bid on the block just south of the Javits. They’re gonna have to issue an RFP for that site anyway.

Maybe a casino wouldn't be a bad idea for the area. Just in terms of foot traffic and also business for say the mall along with increasing the visible foot traffic in the area. The Vessel has been wildly successful and the extension of the High Line which have helped to turn HY into a vibrant destination. Yes its mostly residential but I think so long as there's an adequate police presence, should keep the area sane if a Casino were to rise. They can still make it work with the residential. Always good for the local economy. If it draws more visitors and folks to the area, local businesses will reap the benefits.

Since Javits is apparently not going anywhere, why not put the casino on top of it?

The state runs the Javits Center. Putting it near the Javits is a good idea. The west side has plenty of available lots to build on, including the railyards, and the block immediately south of the Javits. Any future expansion of the Javits (it recently underwent one) should be for the Javits itself.

But I know Times Square doesn’t need a casino. Neither does Herald Square. Queens will likely get one at Resorts World. It would have been interesting to see something proposed for LIC. Coney Island could use one. If it’s going to be in Manhattan, the west side is the place. It could be designed in whatever gimmicky fashion they like. We’ll eventually see the proposals.

That’s…. The perfect spot for a Manhattan casino. Within walking distance of Javits. A Manahattan casino should canabalize Atlantic City traffic from New York and North Jersey. Good grief.

Yeah, New Jersey has been resistant to placing a casino in northern Jersey at the expense of Atlantic City. But you can bet that would change with the opening of a Manhattan casino. And you might get it right on the Hudson.

I suspect that a Manhattan bid would gain momentum (and resistance) once the bids are out. I think the Resorts World casino hurts a chance of getting one near Citifield. Mayor Adams will be all in, either way.

Related Companies and Wynn Resorts Announce Partnership

September 15, 2022

Quote:

Related Companies and Wynn Resorts today announced a partnership to pursue a downstate casino license on the Western Yards at Hudson Yards.

The plan for a resort, entertainment and gaming destination along the Hudson River will deliver thousands of permanent and construction jobs and billions in direct and indirect tax revenue to the state and city. The New York State budget passed earlier this year provided for three downstate gaming licenses.

The Western Yards is ideally located directly next to Javits Center – which has recently completed a $1.5 Billion expansion and is one of the busiest convention centers in the United States hosting the world's leading conventions, trade shows and special events. Together with the Javits Center, a world-class resort on the Western Yards would create the country's pre-eminent convention and entertainment district.

Located along the High Line's northernmost portion, Hudson Yards is walking distance to all of the region's major public transportation including the 7-Train line, Penn Station (accessible to the LIRR, A/C/E, 1/2/3 Train lines), Moynihan Train Hall, and the Hudson River Ferry.
Quote:

"As New York City emerges from the pandemic, the Western Yards provides the ideal site for a resort that will reinvigorate our tourism economy and provide billions in tax revenues for the city and state," said Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies. "Combining Related's unparalleled ability to execute complex mixed-use developments with the best-in-class resort and gaming operator is the perfect pair and we're excited to pursue this together."

"Wynn Resorts has a long history of utilizing a compact, upscale casino floor to support the creation of spectacular resort experiences that appeal to an array of guests – travelers and locals alike," said Craig Billings, CEO of Wynn Resorts. "We look forward to engaging with the community, learning and understanding what we can do to help New York City to continue to thrive."

Developed by Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group, Hudson Yards is the center of New York City's rapidly evolving West Side and home to diverse shops and culinary experiences, offices for leaders in industry, public art, acres of open gardens and groves, and dynamic hub to New Yorkers, tourists and visitors to the Javits Center.

That's good, I hope we still get a few very tall skyscrapers out of this, even if a casino happens.

NYguy Sep 20, 2022 12:36 PM

^ No reason the casino itself couldn't be tall. This will all have a mixed-use component (casino/hotel/resort). My question now is who gets to design it. Gehry was on tap for the commercial component. A Gehry designed casino would be spectacular, no doubt. But who knows.

colemonkee Sep 20, 2022 1:38 PM

The High Line Casino!!! It names itself!!!

From a design perspective, modern casinos - not counting the more ornate, stately buildings from Europe which are beautiful on the outside - are closer to convention centers in their layout; large, single-floor buildings with high ceilings, very wide column spans (which usually prevent additional floors above, when not supported by tower core + columns), and intentionally blank walls along the perimeter. It's usually the other uses in a casino complex - hotel tower, retail, grand entrances - that give a casino architectural interest from the exterior. This site is large, but not that large when it comes to modern casinos (those built in the last 25 years). If this is where they choose to place it, would expect the casino to take up the eastern 3/5 of the site, with a tower (or two) framing a grand entrance over the curve of the High Line. That would essentially turn it's back to the city - with additional, slightly less grand casino entrances on the east, north, and south - but would be the most creative use of the site constraints for a casino. But you would have mostly blank street walls for the remainder of the east, north, and south faces.

NYguy Sep 20, 2022 7:59 PM

^ I can see it now. “Come, join our ‘High Liners Club’ at the Wynn Hudson Resort & Casino, the place for the best, exclusive entertainment in the city!”

But I can also see the tower portion of the development at either end. It would still leave floor plates larger than most of the potential competitors. A NY Casino needs to be splashy, something to make a statement on the west side. Related said all of the other planned elements (the school, affordable housing) would still be included, so I don’t see the casino taking up most of the site.

This video is somewhat critical of HY. It's saying HY phase II has been delayed because the developers are not as incentivized to complete it because it contains a lot of affordable housing...

mrnyc Sep 26, 2022 10:48 PM

yeah a western yards grand casino is fine — as long as they add a new msg to the mix.

but really anything to kickstart getting the western yards decked and finished is good news.

NYguy Sep 27, 2022 11:03 AM

^ No MSG is going there. They’d be lucky to get the casino.

Just another opinion piece. It was delayed because of the delay in platform approval, followed by the economy. The development of the first half if the railyards was delayed as well, again, by the economy. Yet the towers are filled today. Let’s not try to overthink it. And it has relatively litttle affordable housing. As a matter of fact, Related has long said it’s the second half of the development is what drives the whole thing. But we’ve known this because we’ve been following it from the beginning.

Casino expansion for New York City area moves forward

By Nick Reisman
Oct. 03, 2022

Quote:

New York gambling regulators on Monday named officials to a board to oversee siting for casinos in the New York City metropolitan area as the state seeks to expand commercial gaming halls to a lucrative market beyond upstate communities.

The Gaming Commission named former New York City Housing Commissioner Vicki Been, New York Women's Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Quenia Abreau and former Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz.

Officials are expected to issue requests for proposals to win a license for opening and operating up to three casinos in the region. Licenses are not exepcted to be issued until 2023.

NYC casino process moves ahead as key siting board gets members

By Jon Campbell
Published Oct 3, 2022

Quote:

A business leader, a former university president and a former New York City deputy mayor will oversee the bidding process for New York’s three remaining casino licenses, which are expected to be awarded in New York City and the surrounding area.

The state Gaming Commission on Monday unanimously approved the first three members of the Gaming Facility Location Board, a powerful five-member panel that will analyze any proposals for the potentially lucrative casino licenses and choose the three that will ultimately move on for final approval. It remains unclear when the commission will appoint the last two members.
Quote:

The three members are:

-Quenia Abreu, president and CEO of the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce;

-Vicki Been, a New York University law professor, former New York City deputy mayor and commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development; and

-Stuart Rabinowitz, former president of Hofstra University.

The appointments mark the latest milestone in the process for awarding casino licenses in New York City, each of which will require the winner to pay a licensing fee of at least $500 million. By law, the facility board now has 90 days to begin formally soliciting proposals from casino developers.
Quote:

week to approve at least a majority of what will ultimately be a powerful, five-person board, which will be tasked with awarding the state’s final three private casino licenses — all of which are expected to be awarded in New York City and the surrounding area.

In 2013, New York voters approved a constitutional amendment allowing up to seven private casinos statewide — complete with poker, Blackjack and other table games. The first four were limited to areas well north of the city, with a prior iteration of the board selecting proposals that were ultimately built in the Catskills, Schenectady, Seneca County and — after a significant push from local leaders after it was initially shut out — the Southern Tier.

I hope that the City declines to renew MSG's operating permit and that a new MSG is built on the western portion of the HY. Now is the time to finally fix Penn.

The City wouldn’t be that stupid. You want the Dolans as a partner if you want MSG removed, and a say in what takes its place. Short of eminent domain (good luck convincing a court that an active arena that is busy every night is a blight), you can’t kick them off the site. So, if you say “we’re no longer gonna let you operate an arena on site”, they’ll just say fine, and move across the river out of spite. Politicians are dumb, but not quite that dumb. New Yorkers are what keep that arena filled, and like it or not, they like the Garden right where it’s conveniently located. And those people also vote.

There’s zero chance that the Dolans will move to NJ. It’s my understanding that when the operating permit expires, MSG can’t be used for hosting events. A new arena on the western yards would be ideal.
