It’ll probably be a few months before we see Related’s actual proposal. But I’m guessing the casino would go on the one commercial site, just accross from 35 Hudson.
The state should have put the casino bid on the block just south of the Javits. They’re gonna have to issue an RFP for that site anyway. https://a4.pbase.com/g12/06/102706/2...5.sc544FfC.jpg https://a4.pbase.com/o12/06/102706/1...bwwZIS.s1b.jpg |
Maybe a casino wouldn't be a bad idea for the area. Just in terms of foot traffic and also business for say the mall along with increasing the visible foot traffic in the area. The Vessel has been wildly successful and the extension of the High Line which have helped to turn HY into a vibrant destination. Yes its mostly residential but I think so long as there's an adequate police presence, should keep the area sane if a Casino were to rise. They can still make it work with the residential. Always good for the local economy. If it draws more visitors and folks to the area, local businesses will reap the benefits.

But I know Times Square doesn’t need a casino. Neither does Herald Square. Queens will likely get one at Resorts World. It would have been interesting to see something proposed for LIC. Coney Island could use one. If it’s going to be in Manhattan, the west side is the place. It could be designed in whatever gimmicky fashion they like. We’ll eventually see the proposals. |

I suspect that a Manhattan bid would gain momentum (and resistance) once the bids are out. I think the Resorts World casino hurts a chance of getting one near Citifield. Mayor Adams will be all in, either way. The press release…… https://www.related.com/press-releas...ce-partnership Related Companies and Wynn Resorts Announce Partnership September 15, 2022 Quote:

^ No reason the casino itself couldn't be tall. This will all have a mixed-use component (casino/hotel/resort). My question now is who gets to design it. Gehry was on tap for the commercial component. A Gehry designed casino would be spectacular, no doubt. But who knows.

The High Line Casino!!! It names itself!!!
From a design perspective, modern casinos - not counting the more ornate, stately buildings from Europe which are beautiful on the outside - are closer to convention centers in their layout; large, single-floor buildings with high ceilings, very wide column spans (which usually prevent additional floors above, when not supported by tower core + columns), and intentionally blank walls along the perimeter. It's usually the other uses in a casino complex - hotel tower, retail, grand entrances - that give a casino architectural interest from the exterior. This site is large, but not that large when it comes to modern casinos (those built in the last 25 years). If this is where they choose to place it, would expect the casino to take up the eastern 3/5 of the site, with a tower (or two) framing a grand entrance over the curve of the High Line. That would essentially turn it's back to the city - with additional, slightly less grand casino entrances on the east, north, and south - but would be the most creative use of the site constraints for a casino. But you would have mostly blank street walls for the remainder of the east, north, and south faces. |
^ I can see it now. “Come, join our ‘High Liners Club’ at the Wynn Hudson Resort & Casino, the place for the best, exclusive entertainment in the city!”
But I can also see the tower portion of the development at either end. It would still leave floor plates larger than most of the potential competitors. A NY Casino needs to be splashy, something to make a statement on the west side. Related said all of the other planned elements (the school, affordable housing) would still be included, so I don’t see the casino taking up most of the site. |
This video is somewhat critical of HY. It's saying HY phase II has been delayed because the developers are not as incentivized to complete it because it contains a lot of affordable housing...

yeah a western yards grand casino is fine — as long as they add a new msg to the mix.
but really anything to kickstart getting the western yards decked and finished is good news. |
^ No MSG is going there. They’d be lucky to get the casino.

Just another opinion piece. It was delayed because of the delay in platform approval, followed by the economy. The development of the first half if the railyards was delayed as well, again, by the economy. Yet the towers are filled today. Let’s not try to overthink it. And it has relatively litttle affordable housing. As a matter of fact, Related has long said it’s the second half of the development is what drives the whole thing. But we’ve known this because we’ve been following it from the beginning. |

Details of the specific casino proposals likely won't come out until after New Year's....

I hope that the City declines to renew MSG's operating permit and that a new MSG is built on the western portion of the HY. Now is the time to finally fix Penn.
