Quidi Vidi Village (Kwye-da Vye-da, if you're local; Kiddie Viddie if you're from anywhere else in St. John's), October 6, 2013.

Thought this was a nice aerial photo of Halifax. Too bad it is so small.

It was part of a post about the history of the Commons, the open green space in the foreground. This land was granted to the public by King George III in 1763, so it's the park's 250th anniversary:

Red Deer, a surprisingly lovely city. It is too bad that the downtown is so dead on Sundays but it is a beautiful and well-kept downtown core for sure. Hopefully this is sufficient recompense for my hubris :P

Did they send you there as penance?

It's another miserable day in St. John's - but the clouds did part just enough to give me a nice shot of the Carnival Queen and God's preference for Roman Catholics. Or maybe the Irish. Or perhaps the Anglicans. Those three buildings are all in a line so it's hard to know where the rainbow ends.

Three buildings, not two? There's an Irish church separate from the Catholic one (pale grey stone with the two towers, the topmost one)? I can see the Anglican one lower down the hill in line with it, but that's only two. (I thought Quebec was the only place where the towns and cities had separate churches for English-language Catholics and French-language Catholics.)

Parts of the ROC where there are lots of francophones tend to have that too.

Oh, no.

There's the grey Roman Catholic Basilica on top of the hill (which was the inspiration for St. Pat's in NYC, and is still the second-largest Irish-built church in North America).

That's followed by the beige, single-tower Irish Benevolent Society Building (it's the oldest philanthropic organization in North America, with membership open to anyone born in Newfoundland of Irish ancestry). It's probably the most expensive condo building in the city today.

Then, finally, is the Anglican Cathedral.

So, the rainbow ending on the Irish Basilica or ending on the IBSB is "God's preference for the Irish" in both cases. (As I thought. :P)

(Or maybe, in the latter case, "God's preference for people who choose to buy a condo in a converted heritage building instead of in a bland, sparkling new glass box".)

:haha: Exactly.

But, of course, not all the Catholics are Irish (never were, and certainly not today. We have a relatively significant Central/South American population) - and the IBS is open to people of Irish heritage of all faiths. Granted, it's mostly Catholic... but there are some Protestant members from the north.
