I dont see this as being Mines Field. There were no Gasometers " large round structure in the background" in the area. This is more likely the Santa Monica Airport as there was a Southern Counties gas base and holder facility on Rose Ave just slightly South west of here.

[QUOTE=Sonny☼LA;6583698]New life for Teed Street in Chinatown!

A Chinatown hillside will soon be home to a vertical park within walking distance of the Alpine Recreation Center thanks to $1 million in funding that was announced Tuesday by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina.

The acre of park land, created by chunks of existing hillside, will be located near the Chinatown Library at Ord and Yale Streets.

Wait a minute, wait a minute! From the description of this new park, it will be located about here:

That would put the park on the slope right behind the Clover Trailer Park!

I've never heard of one either, but that's what Google's for, right? :)

According to www.merriam-webster.com, a whistling buoy is "a buoy that makes a whistling sound due to the action of waves and usually marks a shoal or channel entrance". A longer, more technical description can be found at chestofbooks.com.

USC has a picture which looks remarkably similar to the postcard. It's titled "Close-up view of the whistling buoy off Point Fermin, San Pedro, 1890".

The following article is from the San Francisco Call, Volume 102, Number 106, 14 September 1907. It mentions the Point Fermin whistling buoy and another at Point Vincent - I'm guessing they mean Point Vicente.

Four maps showing the location of the Point Fermin lighted whistling buoy can be found here.

The "whistle" appears to have been steam operated, suggesting that it had someone tending to it. Could the buoy have been some indirect inspiration for some other forms of navigational whistling?

Especially good for splashdowns? ;)

The capsules appear to have been constructed by McDonnell in St. Louis; however, there were plenty of SoCal connections to the project. Bendix, North American, Convair and others. https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...E5rUuDmDNn3V1A

Thanks for digging up that information on the whistling buoy HossC. I had no idea such a thing existed.

srk1941 May 21, 2014 3:54 PM

I don't see how that postcard can be dated 1925, as that is a late 1930s-early 1940s car?

In the early 1940s, architect Reginald D. Johnson took 16mm Kodachrome footage of his project Baldwin Hills Village. It's wonderful, you can see it here:

http://vimeo.com/8568666

He contrasted the footage of the glories of Utopian living in the Village with the less glorious haphazard planning of early 40s Los Angeles. If you go to 17:34 (through around 17:41) you can see Nirvana in its Kodachrome glory... that pagoda by the street was there in the early 40s? Don't know how to reconcile that with the LA Times image...

Actually, I was thinking the new park might be half a block east at the location of the (possibly never officially built) Teed St, behind the current library. That would put it in JW Robinson's front yard. So the hallowed ground of Clover Trailer Park may be safe. You know what would be great in that spot, though? A retro trailer motel like Hicksville near Joshua Tree:
Hicksville Trailer Palace

At least that's where they're standing in the photo...seems a tight squeeze for a park but I guess that's why they're going vertical.

That has me stumped as well. I wonder if the square 'pagoda'-entrance would show up in one of HossC's vintage aerials?

srk1941 May 21, 2014 6:19 PM

Because the early 40s film shows the pagoda, as does the envelope (which I think is also 1940s, based on the car), I think that pagoda was built after the 1940 sale... and has since been removed.

Historic Aerials has images for 1948, 1952 and 1954, but they're all too blurry to make out any detail. Instead, here's a screengrab from the Reginald D. Johnson video that srk1941 linked to (above).
NB. I've lightened and sharpened the image.

It is 2415 Gramercy Park, Los Angeles. Location revealed by cross referencing the Assessor's office and Google Street View. Both that house and the one next door are still there. The Assessor's office has the date of the house at 1917. There has been some "wrought iron frou-frou" added to the porch and the driveway, but essentially the exterior of the house appears the same. The cross street is West 24th Street. The neighborhood still has a lot of houses of that vintage still standing and in great shape.

I ran the street number by itself through the Assessor's office site and then began running all the ones that were in Los Angeles as opposed to any other suburb, pulling up the Google street view as I went. Fortunately, it was only about the 40th one down the page in LA so I did not have to go through the whole county! Also fortunately, it was still there so we could find it. Many of the addresses were either vacant lots, old retail places or new apartments/condos.
