[QUOTE=Sonny☼LA;6583698]New life for Teed Street in Chinatown!
A Chinatown hillside will soon be home to a vertical park within walking distance of the Alpine Recreation Center thanks to $1 million in funding that was announced Tuesday by Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina. The acre of park land, created by chunks of existing hillside, will be located near the Chinatown Library at Ord and Yale Streets. Molina Secures $1 million for Vertical Chinatown Park/ http://egpnews.com/wp-content/upload...k-image001.jpg Photo: Diandra Jay Wait a minute, wait a minute! From the description of this new park, it will be located about here: http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps50ad5870.jpg Google Maps That would put the park on the slope right behind the Clover Trailer Park! http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...psb5129b12.jpg Cry Danger, 1951 - RKO Radio Pictures http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps30755f48.jpg Cry Danger, 1951 - RKO Radio Pictures The Clover Trailer Park is sacred ground here at Noirish Los Angeles. I think we should send a representative to protest. |

According to www.merriam-webster.com, a whistling buoy is "a buoy that makes a whistling sound due to the action of waves and usually marks a shoal or channel entrance". A longer, more technical description can be found at chestofbooks.com. USC has a picture which looks remarkably similar to the postcard. It's titled "Close-up view of the whistling buoy off Point Fermin, San Pedro, 1890". http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...tlingBuoy1.jpg USC Digital Library The following article is from the San Francisco Call, Volume 102, Number 106, 14 September 1907. It mentions the Point Fermin whistling buoy and another at Point Vincent - I'm guessing they mean Point Vicente. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original California Digital Newspaper Collection Four maps showing the location of the Point Fermin lighted whistling buoy can be found here. |

The "whistle" appears to have been steam operated, suggesting that it had someone tending to it. Could the buoy have been some indirect inspiration for some other forms of navigational whistling? Especially good for splashdowns? ;) https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...E5rUuDmDNn3V1Ahttps://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...E5rUuDmDNn3V1A http://media.airspacemag.com/images/..._Main_ON09.jpghttp://media.airspacemag.com/images/..._Main_ON09.jpg http://www.trbimg.com/img-5373ae6b/t...03/580/580x455http://www.trbimg.com/img-5373ae6b/t...03/580/580x455 The capsules appear to have been constructed by McDonnell in St. Louis; however, there were plenty of SoCal connections to the project. Bendix, North American, Convair and others. https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...E5rUuDmDNn3V1A |
Good job FredH, in realizing the noirish connection to the new 1 acre park.

Los Angeles Plaza 1933
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/845/fhuet.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/839/iw9p.jpgebay __ Thanks for digging up that information on the whistling buoy HossC. I had no idea such a thing existed. |
I don't see how that postcard can be dated 1925, as that is a late 1930s-early 1940s car?
In the early 1940s, architect Reginald D. Johnson took 16mm Kodachrome footage of his project Baldwin Hills Village. It's wonderful, you can see it here: http://vimeo.com/8568666 He contrasted the footage of the glories of Utopian living in the Village with the less glorious haphazard planning of early 40s Los Angeles. If you go to 17:34 (through around 17:41) you can see Nirvana in its Kodachrome glory... that pagoda by the street was there in the early 40s? Don't know how to reconcile that with the LA Times image... Quote:

Hicksville Trailer Palace At least that's where they're standing in the photo...seems a tight squeeze for a park but I guess that's why they're going vertical. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps3c09dfcd.jpg -LAPL http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psde1c0bd5.jpg -GSV |

Because the early 40s film shows the pagoda, as does the envelope (which I think is also 1940s, based on the car), I think that pagoda was built after the 1940 sale... and has since been removed.

oldstuff, you figured out the location with 2415 as the only clue? That's pretty impressive! |
