Is that a diagram of part of the skyline or are these buildings to be built soon?

Both. It's a model of the lower part of downtown along the river.

Of the 36 high rises in that model (buildings over 115 feet), 3 are under construction, 2 in site prep, 2 proposed. The other 29 buildings are built.

Dariusb Dec 28, 2019 8:10 PM

Wow, it's like Austin's skyline just keeps growing and growing. I'm anticipating what the final result will look like!

That model is missing:

-Tower 5c (634')
-Hyatt Centric's The Avenue (348')
-311 W. 7th (~40 stories)

Oh, is 4th & Colorado - "The Molar" (356') tucked in there???

**Does anyone know where that model is? And, could someone take multiple angle photos of it?

Syndic Dec 29, 2019 1:40 AM

Page office, most likely.

That would be awesome if they were relocating to that building, we’ll see!

An 11-story apartment building was imploded this morning to make way for a taller apartment building. The site actually had two 11-story apartment buildings on it, but the second building will be demo'ed by conventional means.

You guys and gals are soon going to have the best skyline in Texas-especially with the local scenery-the river, hills and woods. Nice update.

Well, now I know what the noise was that woke me up this morning. I live about 5 miles north of the university but it was so loud that I thought a major disaster had occurred close by. I heard the bangs and then there was the rumble that rattled my windows. We were talking here on my block this afternoon about it and everyone said they were startled, and kept thinking we would soon hear sirens, but of course we didn't.

The Best Forumer Jan 6, 2020 4:15 PM

Yes, nice catch. I never changed it back after the approved elevations were released. That'll be fixed on the next update.

EDIT: I went ahead and fixed it already.

You should hang out in the Austin subforum more often to stay on top of such things. :)

Here's a much better video of the implosion that shows multiple angles. There were actually three 11-story buildings and two of them were imploded.

1) 311 West Seventh - New, ~40-story development near 6xGuad is working its way through the city entitlement process now:

https://i.imgur.com/karMuK6.png

2) The Railyard - A new development on the site where the old Railyard condos are. My cousin used to live there. Great location - had lots of fun there. Karlin Real Estate (Los Angeles) paid just under $1500/SF for the ~1.62 ac property (a record). They are marketing the following for the site. Could be Austin's first supertall:

https://i1072.photobucket.com/albums...psuehbgegk.jpg
https://i1072.photobucket.com/albums...psazqdlbot.jpg
https://i1072.photobucket.com/albums...psztaa8tnu.jpg

https://i1072.photobucket.com/albums...psjykhks0e.jpg

Looks like the Railyard Project is more than just marketing. Development paperwork has been submitted to the city. ATX Tower East, and ATX Tower West are the project names currently given for the towers. No information as of yet on tower heights or floor counts.

ATX Tower East: 500 Apts. + 300 Condos + 15K Sq. Ft. Retail
ATX Tower West: 884K Sq. Ft. office + 15K Sq. Ft. Retail

These are definitely going to be of significant height, possibly new tallest candidates. Looking forward to seeing the final design and details of these towers.

The ATX Feb 16, 2020 1:35 AM

g-man435 took a lot of incredible drone photos around downtown shortly after sunrise this morning. Most of them are posted in the individual project threads in the Austin subforum.

Here are some of g-man's skyline shots. Austin has ~45 towers in development between 300' and 1,000'. Almost 1/3 (14) of them have already started. The skyline will be seriously ramping up over the next five years - as long as the economy doesn't tank.

Well done! This is some Miami/Seattle level cray...

I believe this is a mobile chilled water supply unit. Does anyone know what building it is for? It's at 4th and Rio Grande.

Great pics by g-man! I think Austin always looks best mid-spring, when leaves are lush but still fresh and bright green. Hopefully we will see another round of amazing aerial pics then!

citykid09 Feb 21, 2020 12:27 AM

I think it’s cool that the city leaders in Austin (unlike a near by city), are thinking big when it comes the transit. They are not going to settle for Bus Rapid Transit or street level Light Rail through the downtown area. They are thinking full on subway.
Quote:

“We can go small and fail or we can make the right investment for the future of our city,” council member Jimmy Flannigan said. “We’re talking about rail in a tunnel. That’s a subway. I mean, wow. That’s what real cities do.”
I think that is the correct choice for a city like Austin. Do not look at Houston or San Antonio for inspiration, if you are going to look at a Texas city look at Dallas but you should really draw inspiration from rail systems like DC Metro.

If Austin decided to do big things transit wise, it'd definitely make it a potential leader in transportation in the south/southwest.

Syndic Feb 22, 2020 2:52 PM

A user added some of the upcoming projects to show what it will look like. (There are a couple 600+ footers that aren't shown here because they haven't given us quality renderings yet.)

Austin actually has enough buildings over 600 feet in the pipeline to eclipse the number Dallas has completed at the moment including at least one that could end up being a supertall.

600+ feet:

Austin - 13
Dallas - 11

Zapatan Feb 22, 2020 5:48 PM

Is that 1000 footer just a concept? That would be surreal if it happened.

If all these projects go through Austin will be kicking Houston and Dallas's ass in terms of development. Hard to believe those massive cities barely build anything.

I wasn't aware that Austin has 13, I thought there's only 8, but sometimes I just like to feel happy about how far the skyline has already came with the independent, fairmont, austin proper, etc. When I take what we already have for granted, I just don't realize how big the skyline already is.

But I'll say this, if Austin does one day surpass Dallas in terms of skyline mass and density, it says a lot about its economy growth, and Dallas's lack of.

Syndic Feb 22, 2020 6:43 PM

The things that give Austin the edge: hilly terrain, natural beauty, dedication to parks, younger culture, UT braintrust, capitol complex, central location, growing at the right time (rather than in the era of unmitigated car-centric sprawl).

?? Are we thinking of the same Houston? Houston is going vertical at an astronomical pace. Houston and Austin are my cities and I want them both to compete and thrive, but Houston has many more buildings under construction. No supertalls though :/ I think Austin will take the crown pretty soon considering there's only one urban core compared to Houston's five.

Houston’s cores are growing together though. Austin will never catch Houston.

Maybe you could give just a couple of those new projects to your friends down the road in San Antonio?

The supertall is a real proposal. They recently filed a site plan for it. At first we had assumed it was just marketing, but with them filing a site plan it makes it a little more real than just a concept. They also bought the existing apartment buildings and land where they're planning the project. It's actually two towers each on half of their blocks. The two towers are described as 884,000 square feet of office space and 15,000 square feet of retail in one tower, and 500 apartments and 300 condos in the other tower plus 15,000 square feet of retail.

Here's the thread on it, including the renderings we've seen of the original concept.

We don't have 13, yet, but there are that many total complete and in the pipeline.
