Wow. I've been thinking about moving to Austin for years now. This rendering makes me WANT to move there now.

How's downtown like by the way? I've never visited but I would love to one day.

And the biggest proposed cluster of towers are out view at the bottom of that photo in the Rainey St. District. There are a lot of towers proposed for that area, and among them are five proposals in the 500' and 600'+ range lined up in a row:

44 East - 51-Stories, 585'

Downtown Austin is one of the best in Texas, in my opinion. Simply because it has life after 5. Bars, restaurants, shopping ect. It’s getting more dense by the day as you can tell. Make the move and don’t pay attention to the Reddit people who tell you we’re full. Lol

It is perhaps the best in the state (along with san antonio). Very lively.

Downtown Austin is the only true 24 hour city center in Texas and one of the few in the southern tier of US states. The only place that compares in the region is New Orleans, and New Orleans is really only lively (and arguably safe) in the French Quarter and the Marigny. Downtown Austin is the dominant business quarter of the city and also home to the state capitol. The daytime population of downtown and the UT campus area exceeds 150,000 people. The actual downtown is home to over 10,000 residents, mostly residing in high rises in the approximately one square mile or so of downtown. There are also 6 to 7 thousand hotel rooms downtown with a 75% or better occupancy rate. There are two or three very lively night life districts downtown in addition to thirty or more restaurants scattered throughout downtown. Thousands of people go out at night in downtown Austin. On weekends and during special events (there are always special events it seems) there can be close to of 50,000 people out and about downtown. It is often very "Big City" feeling down there, much to the annoyance of some locals nostalgic for a simpler time and place. The UT campus and the dense West Campus neighborhood are only about 3/4 mile north of downtown, and the areas immediately south, west and east of downtown are thriving with new residential and commercial construction in addition to a multitude of bars and restaurants. Finally, it should be noted that the entire area is very safe by big city standards with a low overall crime rate and good conditions for walking or scootering. The proliferation of scooters throughout the area is becoming something of a nuisance actually, but I guess mobility is enhanced by their presence. Freeways passing through downtown (IH 35 and Mopac) are usually bumper to bumper jammed for most of the day and well into the night. There is a lot of bus service downtown and one puny commuter rail line to NW Austin and beyond. If you are lucky enough to work in or near downtown, living in the center of the city makes a lot of sense and can be very pleasant, pricey but pleasant.

I can't wait to see this stuff start rising especially since I'll be moving to Temple soon and will be able to get to visit the city.

It's also worth pointing out that the vast majority of Austin's new tallest buildings are for mixed use housing, and that neither Dallas nor Houston has residential towers anywhere near their height, density or mixed use flexibility. Correct me if I'm wrong. As I finish this post, I can already hear the teeth grinding in Dallas and Houston.

I don't think Houston or Dallas are jealous of Austin.

Yes, its true that Austin's downtown area is more dynamic, with a core, which is both lively and profitable.

That being said, I can speak for Dallas in stating that they have many more residential towers than Austin. They might not be as tall but there are many more of them.
Speaking for height, there are several completed or in the works that are not too far off of the Austonian (683 ft.):

The Drever (625) Currently undergo renovation from office to residential.
Gables Republic (602) Transformed from office to residential.
Amli Fountainplace (562) Under construction.
Flora & Olive (441) Under construction.
Hall Arts (440) Under construction.

All of these are in the downtown core. I think most Dallasites and Houstonians are proud of the progress they see in Austin and only want to see it improve. There I said all that without any teeth grinding.

Same can be said of Houston, except that the residential towers are distributed amongst its various skylines.

It’s Fort Worth and San Antonio which are slacking.

A number of reasons:

(A) lack of corporate presence in industries preferring downtown locations (banking, law, government)

(B) relative lack of historic urban entertainment districts outside of the Riverwalk (the Pearl and San Pedro Creek are tremendous starts, but they need time to mature)

(C) lack of large quantities of middle to upper income young adults, who prefer (at least relative to previous generations) urban living

Luckily, the trend lines in these areas are good. USAA has moved employees downtown, the city is clearly investing in its core, and were attracting new employee talent.

San Antonio will get there and has all the right bones, it just needs another decade for current trends to bear fruit.

Will be a great addition to that area to go along with Hotel Zaza and The Republic. I like the uniformity of the design and it hides the parking podium well.

It’s bittersweet because that parking podium will replace traditional urban buildings.
