Salisbury House: our motto "selling shitty over-priced food since 1931"!
|
I agree. When I moved here I was excited to try a new "Winnipeg tradition." Instead I got a tiny portion of mediocre fast food on a plastic tray. It's casual dining pricing, but with the atmosphere of a cafeteria.

Checked out Parlour Coffee today at 468 Main St. between McDermot and Bannatyne. Tiny place with a bit of seating on one wall and the front window. Simple and clean inside but the star is the coffee, I had an Americano made with 49th parallel coffee out of Vancouver. Staff is super friendly and are happy the word is getting out through mediums such as this.

Social media on menu 'Tech buff' opens downtown eatery By: Geoff Kirbyson Posted: 09/16/2011 1:00 AM | "The menu of the newest restaurant to hit downtown will include plenty of red meat, shellfish and pasta but its daily feature -- technology -- is what will truly set it apart. The food-services business has been old school for generations but Michael Schafer is out to change that. The owner and chef at Sydney's at The Forks is putting the finishing touches on Rudy's Eat & Drink, which could be the most technologically advanced eatery in the province when it opens on the main floor of the Manitoba Hydro headquarters on Portage Avenue in coming days." No WFP article for this one; its from my own eyes:
Asia City is opening a new location at the former Salisbury House restaurant just north of Bishop Grandin Blvd on Pembina Highway. |
The owner of the new Parlour Coffee on Main Street said on Twitter that the old Bank of Toronto building (456 Main St.) was being turned into a pub. Opening before the winter apparently.
|
Also just heard on the radio that Famous Dave's will be opening a location in Reenders Square. Aiming for a May/June 2012 opening date.

Pop Soda combines food, fully equipped art studio By: Maureen Scurfield / The Insider Posted: 09/28/2011 1:00 AM "IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE? "It's like Rogues Gallery and Tomato Pie had a baby," says chef Pelligrino Santorelli of the new 7,000-square-foot Pop Soda's Coffeehouse and Gallery, which opened with a come-and-go bash Saturday. It pulled more than 500 curious guests to 625 Portage Ave. Doors opened to the public Tuesday at 11 a.m. to show off their muralled walls, retro furniture and worldwide food offerings. "We wanted to do Rogues on steroids," says Santorelli, best-known for the screamin' lime-green arts bistro on Assinboine Avenue. My spy says guests at the opening were gasping, "Look at that! What the heck is that?" while pointing at a fully equipped art studio that lets customers create art for themselves when they drop in. Jazz artist Chet Breau is the house entertainer, playing 7 p.m to 9:30 p.m., Friday to Sunday. Jam sessions start Saturday at 2 p.m. Santorelli was raised in the food business, as his dear departed mother was "Mamma" (Annamaria) of Mamma Mia's on Corydon Avenue. He's now creating Cuban, Mexican and European dishes with fellow chef Marsden Fleming." [...] Full story: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...130688133.html |

Another new player in local barbecue eatery market By: Murray McNeill Posted: 10/8/2011 1:00 AM "LOCAL lovers of southern-styled, smoked and barbecued chicken and ribs have one more reason to be licking their lips in anticipation. A little more than a week after Famous Dave's BBQ announced it was coming to Winnipeg, another U.S.-based restaurant chain specializing in the same kind of finger-lickin' fare -- Woody's Bar-B-Q -- has confirmed it's also opening an outlet here in 2012. Dave Masters, who owns the Canadian master franchise rights for Woody's, said he hopes to open up to four of the restaurants in the city as part of an aggressive expansion that could see up to 100 Woody's outlets in Canada. Winnipeg's first is to open early next year -- probably in February or March -- in a 4,800-square-foot building to be constructed on the southwest corner of Pembina Highway and Grant Avenue. Ron Kibbins, a real estate agent with Re/Max Performance Realty, his wife and their son, Jesse, will own and operate the franchise."
