When the baby is asleep following a tough goodnight session, it can be relaxing to roam the streets of cities built back in the golden age of near-unlimited free time.

Very cool!!!

Wish I could still find pics from my sim city 4 obsession - still the best IMO but only with a staggering number of mods. Sadly that hard drive died and the uploaded pics were on my former university web hosting. Do not have the time I used to in order to make some of the as-realistic-as-possible creations of the past even if I wanted to download it again.

Been thinking about starting a nerd hobby thread after taking up scale models during COVID after an almost 20 year hiatus.

SC4 was incredible and I dumped so, so many hours onto it. I think it still has a consistent modding community but I haven't played it heavily since 2012 or so. Maybe if I have a bit more time i'll boot it up again but it's been a loooong time. It really did well to balance gameplay with realism without being too...graphics-focused like newer releases? I've only played newer games like City Skylines sparingly.

OpenTTD is fun but that's more of a transport sim game than city-building.

I was huge into Sim City 2000 and Sim City 4, but Cities Skylines just doesn't have the strong management sim aspects that drew me to the Maxis titles. Too much sandbox, not enough sim. That said, I am often in awe of the gorgeous cityscapes that some users are able to craft in CS.

I played SimCity 2000 at my job in 1996, pretty much all day as I pretended to work. The boss didn't seem to care. I had some really amazing cities on that PC before I left.

I dumped more hours into SC4 that I can remember. Sadly, I think the PC I had the saves on is gone. Still have the SC4 manual and box for it.

Dabbled in Cities Skylines for a bit, got disinterested.

Thanks!

I'd say I was hoping for Cities:Skylines 2, but the days of the sort of autism seen in those screenshots are likely gone.

That was one dark, cold November in Copenhagen!

I should see if I can dig up the old screenshots of a mid-sized American city I was building in Cities Skylines a few years ago. I've gone through a few computer changes since then and the wide number of mods and assets I had used & subscribed to has made the city unloadable.

Looks like my screenshots are indeed on the hard-drive that I use for file storage. It's been a few years since I have played this city but I was pretty happy with how it turned out. I built from the suburbs in to the centre city.

Haven't played CS in years. Not even sure if my old junky computer still works.

This is the last city I worked on, though. Pretty much the vanilla game for the time, with the cartoonish billboards on all the buildings.

Great thread idea! I sunk countless hours into SimCity 4 in high school. And great builds, Kool, Marty and TownGuy!

Lately I've been doing quite a bit with Cities: Skylines, although the first time I tried it several years ago, it didn't really hook me. It was only a couple years ago that my interest in the game was piqued again by a few helpful youtubers, and I gave it another shot.

I started out playing vanilla, and had fun with that, but eventually I began to bring in mods and custom assets that fundamentally changed the way I played - from mostly simulation-based to more of a creative canvas. These days I run 60-ish mods and several thousand custom assets.

Here's a recent project of mine, a "Tropical Canadian" city with some suburban areas and part of the downtown completed:

Congrats on fatherhood!

I used to love me some Cities Skylines. I built these gargantuan city regions with an extreme amount of details (infrastructure up the wazoo with my revenue cheats, colossal skylines, amazing neighborhoods on mountains, crazy and functional highway networks above and below ground....).

It ground my computer to a complete halt. I still sometimes crack out SimCity4 just to scratch the itch.

I've never made any serious attempts to recreate any real life cities in Simcity, partly because for years I only had the newest Maxis release, Simcity 2013. There's too many limitations in the game for my tastes these days, but I still enjoyed it a few years ago.

The biggest issue was with city sizes..they're tiny.
These are a few screenshots of cities I made about 6 years ago:

Never noticed this thread before, but here are few shots from 2020... Can't wait for Cities Skylines 2!

I thought of posting this as I have been having so much fun building a full-blown Metro Vancouver in the great Cities Skylines (https://www.citiesskylines.com/) on PC.

After spending some 60 hours on the game, I have finally exhausted all the buildable landmass and hopefully captured the most remarkable landscape and cityscape features of the Metro area. As it is still a video game, there are compromises one has to make in terms of scale and exact placement of things, but I am pretty happy with my ongoing build-out. :)

Here is the fully built out map.

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_metro_vancouver_kartta.jpg

Houses in West Vancouver have the best views, like in real life. Traffic is also a constant problem on North Shore also like in real life. Unfortunately the game doesn't have a 3-lane suspension bridge asset, so my Lions Gate Bridge looks a bit more boring than in real life.

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_west_vancouver.jpg

Burrard Inlet from above. One thing the game requires is there being enough industrial area but we don't actually have as much of it. I originally ended up building industrial land all the way up Lynn Canyon and at one time there was even a nuclear plant up there, but I have since gone 100% solar with a field of solar plants in Richmond. :D

Ironworkers Memorial Bridge is also a constant pain in the arse with so much traffic trying to cross the bridge in both directions. Even at 8 lanes it still struggles to move all the traffic during rush hour. Maybe I should consider building the famed third crossing from Clarke to North Shore? :)

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_metro_vancouver6.jpg

I hope my Vancouver has all the defining features of the city. UBC is to the left (and I do have Millennium Line running all the way there!) and Downtown is up above. Hastings Street is seeing some incredible traffic volumes thanks to closeness to Second Narrows but rerouting all truck traffic on Powell Street has helped.

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_metro_vancouver7.jpg

Downtown in all its glory! You don't realize how small the peninsula is before you trying building it in a game.

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_downtown2.jpg

I was trying to capture all the main features but had to make some compomises. There is no Burrard Bridge and Burrard Street connects to Granville Bridge and then street. Cambie Bridge had to be built more to the center to have Olympic Village fit. Too bad that there is no proper asset for BC Place so I had to use an Expo Hall to either be BC Place or Rogers Place. Oh well.

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_downtown1.jpg

Game's awesome asset library includes models for some of our buildings such as MNP Tower and Scotiabank Tower, but I had to use Turning Torso (Malmö/Sweden) for Trump Tower and Aura (Toronto) for Shangri-La. They may look slightly off but scale-wise they are actually pretty perfect. :D

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_downtown3.jpg

I was also eager to consider building the Seawall and Stanley Park Drive, but the landscape doesn't make it easy, so it is still work in progress. Mods make it easier to build such features, but the scale on this map is tight.

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_seawall.jpg

Finally a fully built-out Oakridge Center from the future. I have to say, it is a pretty nice place for a small cluster. :)

http://cdn.vuosiamaailmalla.fi/blog/wp-content/uploads/2020/cities_skylines_oakridge.jpg

I will post more going forward but curious to hear if people have attempted building Metro Vancouver on their side and to what effect? :)

I have been working on the city of 'Saint Monctericton' in Cities Skylines. It's a city based in a hypothetical New Brunswick where there exist only one larger CMA in the province instead of the three smaller ones irl. Here are some screenshots of what I have so far.
