A site plan for another 17-story student apartment building was filed in late November. I posted the link after it was filed, but the ABJ has some details now. It's being called the Standard at Austin, and it's located at 715 1/2 W. 23rd. Here's the site plan again:

Another apartment tower may rise near UT-Austin; More than $130 million in other construction projects planned around town

By Jan Buchholz – Senior Staff Writer, Austin Business Journal
7 hours ago

Landmark Properties Inc., a student housing developer based in Athens, Georgia, has filed a site plan with the city of Austin for its first major project at the University of Texas‚ a 17-story tower at 715 W. 23rd St.

The Standard at Austin could contain 287 units, a parking garage and amenity floor comprising more than 520,000 square feet on a little more than one acre. The project, as described at the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration, is valued at $191 million, which seems particularly pricey and may reflect a typo — something that has happened previously with TDLR records.

Yeah, there's a huge difference between a Standard hotel and a standard student apartment building in West Campus. :)

So, when I look this address up, it's a giant parking garage (the one to the right in the above picture by The ATX). Is it just replacing that?

Site plan was posted on Thursday to the city's AULCC page.

ftp://ftp.ci.austin.tx.us/ATD_AULCC/AULCC_2018/180104/PLANS/AULCC_The%20Standard%20at%20Austin_PLANS.pdf

The elevations only go to the main roof - 172 feet 4 inches, but I measured the penthouse to around 188 feet 4 inches.

It's decent looking for West Campus. The estimated start of construction is October 2018.

The widest side will front West 23rd Street and replace the parking garage that's there now. The south facing units are going to have a nice view of the concrete wall on the Co-Op garage.

Speaking of Standard Hotels. I remember reading about this a while back, but at the time I didn't catch that it was a Standard Hotel. Although this same stuff will probably be going on at the unrelated West Campus Standard apartment completx.

Here are some FAA filings for this project. Interestingly, the permit for the building is showing it at 218 feet.

This also lists the work schedule as 8/1/2018 through 8/1/2020. The crane permit lists the schedule as 9/30 of 2018 through 3/31 of 2020.

The site plan was posted to the AULCC page, and there's a slight change in height. The first elevations we saw didn't show this, but there are two sets of stairs that drop down 3 feet 3 inches below the 0 feet baseline number. So, the overall height appears to be 190 feet 7 inches.

A decent addition to the area. Now if this council could only find the leadership to abolish the excessive parking requirements and adjust upward the restrictive height limits then we could see some narrower towers and more connectivity in the area. Sadly, there is strong opposition to nearly anything that makes sense in this area. For now...

We all love West Campus density but remember - these things are mostly sub-par student housing that you really wouldn't want popping up all over the city.

They are Austin's versions of McSam's hotels in NYC.

They are "fine" for campus and students but not exactly what we want all over town.

Well, a lot of things are due to these places being college students' first real "housing" after living with their parents. And I'm sure some of these issues are because of a lack of staffing, like we've seen in a number of industries right now.

But generally, and from my experience living in WC not too long ago, there are plenty of nice places. Especially in more recent years, legitimately nice apartments have been built that are better than anything west campus had in between 2000-2015. Sure, there won't be anything on the level of the W or Austonian, but Callaway House is certainly equally nice as a number of east Austin apartment complexes, even with the purely 18-20 year old residents.

That said, it sounds like this should have been the building to replace University Towers....which was always like a gigantic fraternity house when I was in college....

West campus management companies are almost all terrible, coupled with the fact that a lot of these college kids simply give no fucks and trash the buildings. This kind of stuff isn't localized to the standard, it's all over the place in these larger buildings

I agree totally. Most of the problems (not electrical shorts so much) are management related, and they want to pack their buildings with students every August before the buildings are 100% completed. As far as college kids not caring, I used to live in a complex off Riverside that had a lot of college students. They would get drunk on weekends and do things like punch holes in the hallway walls rather frequently. Good times.
