View Full Version : Your City, Set to Music

For this thread, I would appreciate it if we limit ourselves to ONE PHOTO per POST and ONE POST per FORUMER per DAY!

What I would LOVE for you to do is to share a picture - probably of your city, but that's not necessary. ANY picture of ANYWHERE in Canada that speaks to you.

And then share the song that you believe sets the appropriate tone for that picture, of that place.

I genuinely hope you'll participate. I LOVE discovering music I'd never hear otherwise, and having a visual that someone actually thought of it, and consciously decided... you know, this scene needs THIS song to really appreciate it... that excites me.

*****

So, I'll start...

When taking this picture tonight:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8473/8120351590_fb229333ef_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8120351590/)
Downtown West End (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8120351590/) by SignalHillHiker (http://www.flickr.com/people/signalhillhiker/), on Flickr

This is the song I was singing in my head:

UMtoVWGS0kA

Especially the line, "I am not lonely; I swear to God, I'm just alone." Suits St. John's, and my mood at that moment, perfectly.

Obviously not my photo, but representative enough of what I'm going for:

I picked up the new Wintersun album the day it started snowing here. Seemed very fitting to me, and helped me almost enjoy it for a moment. And, well, have a listen to some of the most intricate, epic metal you'll hear:

(Warning: It's about 13 minutes long. Not for those with short attention spans!)

I'm going to break a few rules with a slideshow (9 minutes) I put together a few years back. The photos are of places I've visited across Western Canada and are consciously synced with music. Photos illustrate the story. Music is how one feels it...errr something like that.

Although I was fortunate enough to experience it, the photos of the Red Mile during the 2004 Flames Stanley Cup run were not shot by me. I collected them while I was a member of the Alberta based Beyond.ca forum. The rest of the photos are from my lens, except the porsche, lotus, jeep, and some of the nissan stuff haha

I find the anthemic build ups of trance match my approach to photography.

I LOVED yours, Floobie. I would have had some smooth jazz or something like that with your picture. Great to look at it and experience something completely different.

And great slideshow, Ruckus. I loved that picture of the frozen grass with the sun behind. Did you make those? Beautiful!

Driving to the suburban towns north of St. John's - Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, Torbay, Flatrock, and Pouch Cove - is a favourite of mine because it's very scenic and once you're outside the city's narrow's streets and onto proper, modern highways... it's liberating.

This is one of my favourite drives, and one of my favourite driving tunes:

(The house on the top left, on the hill in the background, is Danny Williams' place).

Especially the part where she says "It feels so good", reflects my reaction whenever I step downtown, especially at night.

Thanks SignalHillHiker. I wish I could say the plate of ice with the grass was mine! It was part of a public art installation during our winter festival. There were a half dozen or so different varieties frozen in those plates scattered along the river. They were a nice piece before the vandals arrived.

I like the first post, so I was a bit self conscious about posting "epic" music until I saw the posts after it haha.... maybe i'm too old and don't "get" how the trance/metal/etc speaks to the location lol. It might be a bit cliche, but when I think maritimes, Sigur Ros comes to mind first.

Anyway, Vancouver...

Great ones, all. Sponge's made me laugh, ha! Very nice song, and suited the image. And Dleung's was great too (inspired my next, in fact). But Andrewjm3D's was PERFECT. A picture like that would never make me think, "Oh, I want to visit there!" but with the song, now I do, ha! It's an awesome watching-drivers-in-fast-speed song.

The thing about the stereotypical RDF (Rain, Drizzle and Fog) weather of St. John's is that it's fully immersive. You just feel like you live inside a snowglobe of dirty, grey water.

But, during those moments when the RDF is just ending... you feel almost like you're opening your eyes for the first time. You realize... oh, this little grey bubble around me that's been a few metres wide, my world, for the past week... it's gone. My world is SO much bigger. St. John's so so much bigger. And we're not alone. The Maritimes, New York, they're all still there too.

That's an aspect of a picture like this one that just doesn't translate because you don't know if I hadn't been able to see across the harbour for a week before taking it and didn't even know the cruise ship was there.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/8011828256_129a49eb0e_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8011828256/)
Cruising St. John's (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8011828256/) by SignalHillHiker (http://www.flickr.com/people/signalhillhiker/), on Flickr

So that's why I think an epic song suits it. And none more perfectly so than "NOW WE ARE FREE!"

There is something very Steam-Punk about the Distillery District, and I've always thought 'A Series Of Unfortunate Events' was a very steam punk movie.

This song fits Ottawa well except for the couple of lines that mention the States. I shot this footage a while back which captures the "pastoral" quality of the Ottawa-Gatineau riverfront and some of great riding along the cycling paths.

I was trying to think of something appropriate for Kitchener-Waterloo but unfortunately all I could come up with was the music for the "Chicken Dance" (with accordian!). I will spare all until I'm in a better mindset and memories of Oktoberfest have faded. ;)

Trinity, Newfoundland - a village of a couple hundred but it's done a fantastic job promoting its annual theatre festival, etc. So it's become quite a tourist draw.

If you go in the off season, when it's deserted... this song by a famous Canadian singer, which happens to have a video filmed in Newfoundland, but not at Trinity, is perfect.

Especially: "All of life is this longing to lay your body down..."

Every time I hear that line, my mind flashes to my memories of visiting Trinity. So bizarrely perfect.

You need to listen to the whole thing to get into the right mood, but from 2:25 on is... perfection.

And there's this burning
THERE IS THIS BURNING!!!
Where's the soul I want to know
New York City is evil
The surface is everything but I could never do that
Someone would see through that
And this is our last time
We'll be friends again
I'll get over you, you'll wonder who I am
And there's this burning
Just like there's always been
I've never been so alone alone
And I've, and I've never been so alive

To Build a Home is a great song indeed.

The atmosphere in St. John's today was electric. It was mild, the sun felt warm on the skin, there was no wind, the snow is mostly melted, and people - for the first time, en masse - started participating in spring activities.

The walking trails were easily three, four times as busy as I've seen them all winter. Lots of people were smiling. And the joggers were out of their spandex suits and in proper shorts. :D

So, a nice, upbeat tune for today...

This morning my ankle felt better enough that I decided to go for a walk downtown to try a new cafe.

I had coffee - black, of course - with a hummus/pepper bagel. It was delicious. And, while I sat admiring the view of the city, I noticed that I could see the steeples of the Basilica poking out from behind the rowhouses.

Right at that moment, this song came on my MP3 player and I sat there listening to it on repeat for some 30 minutes, just feeling... wonderful... and thinking, "Yep, this is who I am. Colourful, clapboard buildings, a chilly spring day, a busy cafe, my little city bursting with music and art and vitality and... distinctness. I'm so grateful this is my life."

I found this song about Hamilton from 1960. I couldn't stop laughing, it's so cheesy :haha:

Hamilton, home of retro chic. ;)

I have no idea how to post it, but I'd like to offer up "The Battle Hymn of the City of Kitchener, Ontario" by the band Destroy all Robots. It includes the memorable refrain "The city is so bombed out, it looks like Berlin. Circa 1944".

Great Montreal post. :)

And now I will have that Hamilton song stuck in my head all day AGAIN.

It's so Jetsons, I love it.

This song is by Rock Forest, a band whose members are from Sherbrooke ("Rock Forest" was one of our suburbs before it merged with Sherbrooke in 2001).

It's a been almost 30 years but Gatineau is still haunted by this song. Even today there are occasional reports of people in other regions of Quebec that bring up this song/band when people say they are from Gatineau.

Present-day Gatineau is more like this, or at least like to fashion itself in this way. BTW this singer is not from here, he's from Montreal. It's still kind of Gatineau-esque, circa 2015.

L'Île d'Orléans, such a presence in the psyche of Quebec City. Here's Louis-Jean Cormier doing a cover of Félix Leclerc's ode to this beautiful Island: Le tour de l'Île.

Every time I think of Winnipeg and music it usually comes to my 1st personal choice, "Takin Care of Business" by BTO.
Played with Turners son for several years and he wouldn't let me forget this is the Peg, and our music scene is second to none. It pretty much sums up the cities attitude at the time..

Sorry for the old 74..non HD version..

Here's Regina's 1971's re-videoed version of the original Regina 1964's Wonderful Town, which is similar to Hamilton's.

Regina's has better linguistic flow though. Lol! ;)
