Y'all have seen The Ugly Canada Thread. Right? Well this is an opposite of that. Post pictures of the prettiest buildings you think in your city is gorgeous to look at. Again, I'll only type. For Calgary, I think it would be Eighth Avenue Place, mainly because it is made of glass and that it symbolizes the Rockies. What are your prettiest buildings?

MolsonExport, I hope you do not mind :)

In St. John's, My favourite modern building would have to be Fortis Place. It's only under construction at the moment, and it's not very tall, but it definitely has character!

In my opinion, the best looking heritage structure in St. John's would have to be the courthouse on Water Street

The Basilica is also a beautiful structure, as well as being one of the few buildings to survive the Great Fire

Hey now... no 'buts' about it! Height is not an absolute character of appeal; a tall building for St. John's would be totally out of context.

I'm looking forward to Fortis Place's completion :)

So am I! I just wish it had been another 3 or 4 floors taller. Anything taller than that would look out of place in St. John's. But it's a stunning building nonetheless!

For St. John's, I like most of these:

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8041/8059934837_be70a2bda9_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8059934837/)
One Historic Hill (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8059934837/) by SignalHillHiker (http://www.flickr.com/people/signalhillhiker/), on Flickr

From left, it's the Confederation Building (which I detest), the Roman Catholic Basilica of St. John the Baptist (which I love), St. Patrick's Hall (which I REALLY love, especially since the hill there is so steep that ground level at the back is on the top floor), the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (internationally recognized as one of the finest examples of this architectural style in North America), and the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador. It's a bit out of proportion (unbalanced?), that last one... looks a little off-putting, somehow, but it's lovely.

I also love the Masonic Temple (the orange building with green triangle trim to the right of the Cathedral).

And the Murray Premises, now a hotel (the white building with the red roof) is a perfect example of how almost all the old buildings on Water Street used to look in pictures taken before the Great Fire of 1892.

On the other side, it also has the finest courtyard in downtown St. John's.

The Murray Premises (http://www.flickr.com/photos/signalhillhiker/8068971480/) by SignalHillHiker (http://www.flickr.com/people/signalhillhiker/), on Flickr

And, although it's out of character for me, I love the Littledale Complex.

There's a lot of Vancouver buildings I could post, but I'm posting this one as I came across it almost by accident today. I love Gothic Revival architecture and this beaut is in great shape. It was built in 1912 and was originally the Convent for the Sacred Heart and is now St George's junior school. It's a 'class A' Vancouver heritage building.

Canada's cannibal killer must have been on some serious bath salts. Fortunately, the feet are being researched for DNA testing.

But then again, dead, dismembered feet aren't on topic or pretty.

The beautiful Lougheed House, one of the only historic sites in Calgary and a major Canadian Heritage Site, brings memories of powerful Peter Lougheed. It's beautiful inside, with a half museum half
house feel, and outside, with relations to Casa Loma, until the graffiti incident after Lougheed's death.

Spent the weekend at the family cabin on Bridge Lake, about 100 km's north of Kamloops BC, on highway 24 (the Caribou connector) Beautiful fall scenery in an area not well known on this board... highway 24 winds for about 100 kms from Little Fort on the Yellowhead to just south of 100 mile house on highway 97. Lac Des Roches (a few photos down) is widely thought to be the most photographed lake in BC

It's hardly one of the ONLY historic sites in Calgary ;)
Btw, my grandmother once went on a date with Peter Lougheed in the late 1940s, I think she said. She got invited into that house to meet his parents and apparently he had a pretty 'snazzy' car.

One more of my favourite things about St. John's.

I love the peel-away intersections. There are many in the city, where the right lane simply peels away and descends downhill while the the left lane continues at more or less the same elevation.

This is the intersection of Freshwater Road, Lemarchant Road, Parade Street, Carters Hill, Harvey Road, Long's Hill, and Murray Street. The two bolded streets are the ones you can see in this photo, Harvey on the left, Long's Hill on the right.

I like this intersection especially because that building is so narrow and the row of buildings between these two streets is especially attractive.

Here's another view, this is facing Harvey Road, so Longs Hill is just behind these buildings:

Stog is Newfoundland English for... constipated, basically. So the name of the business means "This will constipate you Pizza".
