I'm sure we all have varied musical tastes - this would be a wonderful way to discover some new tunes. :) So, what are you listening to? ;)

Right now, I'm switching between the Lebanese...

eVs0nq0siUM

Greek...

JkyBRM48vUE

And Turkish versions of this song...

xUkE863dCBo

Not sure about the Greek, but a Balkan friend told me the "Ouf" in Arabic and the "Of" in Turkish also exist there and it's just a VERY childish way of saying, "I WANT IT!". It's what a child would shout to her mother in a candy store, "OUF OUF! OF OF!"

A pretty up-beat band from Toronto called Bravestation (http://bravestation.bandcamp.com). They released a new album in July. Currently listening to Kaleidoscope. They're similar to Yeasayer's early stuff.

This is the song that introduced me to them 2 years ago:

tKCCNt5DaiU

I've always found that video to be really anti-climactic.

Most of you have heard this Bosnian girl sing and don't even know it. She's done commercials, movie soundtracks, etc. - all in English. But she's only a name brand star in her home country...

It really depends on my mood, but one group I like is Nortec Collective. They're a group of different DJs that mix electronic beats with traditional Mexican Norteño/Banda music. They're quite famous due to their interesting concept, and they're actually playing in Montreal this week.

Enjoy! (They're from my hometown, the not-so-beautiful Tijuana ;) )

My friends all hurry to hold me down and change the song when this one plays... but I LOVE it. Portuguese, I assume - based on it sounding like Spanish with a swollen tongue.

LOL Michel Teló. Yeah he's Brazilian.

I don't get why that song got so famous, maybe it's just the catchy tune, but the lyrics are monotonous and ridiculous. I speak fluent Portuguese, I guess it doesn't have the same effect when you can understand the dumb shit he's saying. He has better songs and in my opinion "Fugidinha" is a song that doesn't get enough credit.

Btw Brazil is a musical powerhouse. It's amazing to see all the different genres that they have down there.

So, turbofolk is a genre of music that's very popular in southern and eastern Europe. It's basically their equivalent of rap - with the same criminal element, bling, etc.

But there are standards. Serbia has the biggest and the best turbofolk singers. A Bulgarian turbofolk singer is only ever going to be known in Bulgaria, and possibly Macedonia for linguistic reasons. But a Serbian turbofolk singer is always going to be known in every country between Austria and Turkey.

Well, after that intro, here's a Bulgarian one... lol My favourite description of Andrea I've ever heard was, "It's like someone took a normal turbofolk singer and gave her a bath."

And the music videos... they're like Slavic architecture set to music... beautifully tacky...

Probably, oh and Brazilians LOVE their live versions. Try to look for any famous Brazilian song and everything is a damn live video. It's annoying. :haha:

Tina Liebermann Karol, a Ukrainian Jewish woman, who sings primarily in the Russian language. She is one of the few artists alive today who make me think: Thank God I was alive at the time time to hear her, or that she lived when it was possible to record her music.

She has brilliant songs, and crappy pop songs, and everything in between. She's just talented, fun, and not pretentious. There's no fascade. She's just... great. Two of her songs, quite different.

The first is an artsy one...

Well, remember I told you Serbia has the best?

Let me overdose you.

This girl is an ethnic Serb from Kosovo. Basically it's like being a Mexican who is proud of her heritage in Idaho - you turn into SUPER Mexican.

So this girl, without even knowing it, is an exaggerated caricature of Serbian turbofolk singers.

And she is delightfully, tackily, AWESOME...

Another one of my favourites is Buraka Som Sistema, they're a group that mixes techno with African Kuduro. They're from Portugal, but some members/vocalists are from Angola and Brazil.

This is one of their most famous songs:

Reminds me of Kiril featuring Esma. Esma is from Macedonia (where this video is filmed). She is known as the Queen of Roma (Gypsy, though this term is outdated and considered offensive) Music. She is VERY well-known and can sell out concerts from Vienna to Baghdad.

A Balkan bilingual one. The first verse is Serbian, the second is Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin accent.

First guy sings: "Jedna levo, desno dva, jedan napred..."

Second sings: "Jedan lijevo, desno dva, jedan naprijed..."

That's how different they are. lol

"I'll tell you a tale about Newfoundland, dear - we haven't got money or riches to spare. But we can be thankful for one small affair: thank God we're surrounded by water!

The Englishmen came from Land's End to John'o'Groats. They came over to ride our colonial goat. We'd have 8 million more, but they didn't have boats. Thank God we're surrounded by water!

The French in Quebec want a separate state, including our own Labrador, just you wait... they came down to Belle Isle, but they can't walk our straits... thank God we're surrounded by water!

Well, Joey was God, said the Liberal bunch, one day on our harbour he walked after lunch... but he didn't quite make that old, gallantly stunt, thank God we're surrounded by water!"

Old ironically famous dance hit.

Listen closely to the lyrics. ;)

PrFDcDvy8kU

Let me try to write them out, ha!

Oh ye landsmen, and ye seamen
Come listen to my song
It's of a trick was played on me
And it won't delay ya long

I came from sea the other day
A fair maid I did meet
She kindly asked me to a dance
'Twas up on Peter Street

Oh no, says I, me fair maid
Though I can dance quite well
Tonight I'm bound for Wickelow's Town
It's where my people dwell

You'd better come with me, she said
For the distance is not far
And, finding her so friendly,
I jumped into her car

Now as the dance was over
Straight to the bed did go
Was little did I ever think
She'd pull my overthrow

Robbed my gold watch, 30 pounds
A pack of fags and fled
And left me there, stark naked
Alone upon the bed

Now, when I awoke in the morning
'Twas nothing did I spy
But a woman's shirt and apron
Upon the bed, did lie

I wrung my hands, I tore my hair
I cried, what shall I do?
Tonight I'm bound for Wickelow's Town
No more will I see you

Now, as the streets were lonesome
At the hour of 2 o'clock
I put on that shirt and apron
And I marched down to the dock

The crew they saw me coming
And these words to me did say:
My dear old chap, you've struck a snap
Since you've been gone away

Are those the new spring fashions
That the ladies wear on shore
Where is the shop you bought them at?
And is there any more?

The captain on the quarter deck
Looked at me with a frown
He said: Jack I'd buy a better suit than that
For 30 pounds

I would, Sir, if I could, Sir
If I only had the chance
But I met a girl on Peter Street
And she asked me to a dance

She danced my heart's deception
I got robbed from head to feet
And I'll take my oath:
No more I'll do to a dance on Peter Street

Oh ye landsmen and ye seamen
A warning take by me
Be sure to choose good company
When you go out on spree

Be sure to choose good company
Or you'll find yourself like me
With a woman's shirt and apron
For to fit you our for sea

Probably not most people's tastes here, but I've been listening to so much Savatage lately. Like metal versions of Meat Loaf but with better lyrics. While the band hasn't really been around for a decade, they are basically Trans-Siberian Orchestra now, which is hugely popular. Ballads, heavy shit, they could do it all better than any of the 80s metal bands that did make it big.

mv82_BvKjw0

In 1993 they got a new singer (old one stepped back to keyboards and writing), then after one album their guitar player was killed - also in '93 - when hit by a drunk driver who crossed the centre line.

The new singer:
