They are like the mass transit rail systems we have in our largest cities, but they are smaller and are more confined to one area. I believe they can be the way of transportation for a large neighborhood that is made from scratch (ex. Hudson Yards in NYC). Two examples of this system are the Metromover in Miami and the Venice People Mover.

Other than those in city areas, people movers can be found in airports, like the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta's The Plane Train( which I rode once before) and Roissy Airport's CDGVAL in Paris.

Post any other system you guys want.It will be really interesting to see the different locations and versions of this way of transit.

Unfortunately with the city's budget crisis, the future of the People Mover is always shaky, although its financial status is secure for this year.

There's an automated people mover at San Francisco International Airport:

^ ditto o'hare airport here in chicago.

it's 2.7 miles long and makes stops at the 4 main terminals and the remote parking lot. there is a current planned expansion to connect it an even more remote parking lot and allow for an easier connection to a metra commuter rail station.

Huntsville Hospital in Huntsville, AL has this people mover between their main hospital and the women and children's hospital. It's relatively short at 1890 feet, but it seems to be well utilized. It has two tracks to increase frequency.

Besides the Detroit People Mover, Detroit has another people mover with the ExpressTram that runs inside the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport:

The Detroit airport mover’s interesting—it runs on an air cushion and is a descendant of one of the PRT systems exhibited at Transpo 72—the Hovair. An original-vintage model has been put into use at Duke University hospital as a horizontal elevator (from insidedukemedicine.org):

The early PRT concept that went fairly far in development—Germany’s Cabinentaxi (http://faculty.washington.edu/jbs/itrans/cabin.htm)—also found use as a horizontal elevator at the Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain hospital until 2010 (from Innovative Transit Technologies (http://faculty.washington.edu/jbs/itrans/):

Here are a few Jacksonville skyway pics from metrojacksonville.com. The skyway's ridership has recently doubled due to the suspension of fare collection.

I work for a transportation planning & engineering company and operate a website focused on Jacksonville's urban core. Because of this, I was given a tour of the skyway's operation and maintenance yard. Here are a few more pics:
