We know that downtown has somewhat of a monopoly on slick renderings, so we were pretty pleased when we read about $3.2M added to the already pledged $179.8M aimed at modernizing the George Washington Bridge terminal at West 178th Street in Washington Heights. The joint effort by the George Washington Bridge Development Venture and the Port Authority was delayed for three years, but now they're shooting for a 2013 completion date. They hope to create a total of 120,000 square feet of retail space, putting 746 people to work. Officials say some businesses have already signed leases for a handful of the spaces. Alas, they are not naming names just yet.

That's great! I live in upstate Manhattan (north of the GW Bridge) and this terminal could really use some help. I'm lolling at the people in the rendering though. The artist sure doesn't know the neighborhood.

I see some Dominicans in the 1st rendering. You just have to look a little more closely at it.

They're suffering from terminal confusion in Washington Heights.

Locals have been scratching their heads over the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, wondering what’s happening with the long-delayed $183 million makeover.

The streets and sidewalks surrounding the 50-year-old transit hub — a conduit between Washington Heights and New Jersey, lower Manhattan and the Bronx — are littered with construction equipment.

Port Authority officials announced in September that the plan to turn the drab depot into a glitzy transportation center with 100,000 square-feet of shopping space, would begin by the end of the year.

Things were quiet until about a month ago, when trucks starting carting in sheet rock and plastic barriers — and clogging W. 179th St. and Fort Washington Ave.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz said the transit agency was doing its level best to keep bus traffic flowing smoothly.

“The Port Authority is rehabilitating their Bus Terminal,” Ortiz added. “And we are working to mitigate the impact this will have on our bus and subway customers as much as possible.”

There were no signs visible to communicate the purpose for the newfound mess, but Port Authority spokesman Christopher Valens defended the clutter.

Hardhats are building an outdoor trailer to house the terminal’s indoor ticketing and security offices, he said, noting that all those spaces are about to be renovated.

“We haven’t received any traffic complaints or any noise complaints,” Valens said, when asked to respond to residents’ gripes.

no noise complaints??!! oh please, i find that hard to believe. the deafening jackhammering every single morning all winter long we hear while waiting on the bus outside would have to drive the neighbors nuts.

there is nothing visible happening yet, every possible retail space remains bottled up tight. i will keep an eye on that. it will be a great improvement when completed.

well this project could not be moving slower, although to be fair it is complicated.

there is constant work and now more visible movement lately --
signage over broadway went up just recently, so that is encouraging!
