A lovely collection capturing Vancouver's uniqueness. It seems to me to be the most Canadian of Canadian cities.

that vancouver special looks like it should be in the far flung new jersey suburbs.

and it's true, falling off of ladders does only happen to other people.

Thanks very much for the comments everyone!

Many of the buildings here, especially the older concrete buildings, need to be regularly washed or they get up a build up of grime and moss from all the rain we get. It's something that really should be done more often on prominent buildings but adds to gritty aspect of pictures, so I'm not all complaint :)

Great pics entheosfog. Regarding the moss buildup, it can happen quickly, maybe just one or two years after something has been cleaned. You see moss particularly on flat roofs and stucco walls which have a lot of water drainage, or where there is no sun exposure.

Interesting tour.

I'll take that dec-jan weather.

Alot of modest housing before all the shiny glass buidlings arrived.

Nice thread. I really like this shot a lot, I've tried to take a lot of shots with this sort of lighting and they never seem to turn out:

I'm going to be in Vancouver the weekend after next. Where, would you recommend, would be a good place to get a birds-eye vantage point to take photos of the Downtown Eastside area? I want to get as many pictures of all parts of the city, and I like get a good aerial shot!

I would recommend the Vancouver Lookout. It's 360 degree viewing deck at the top of the Harbour Centre building. It's located at Seymour and Hastings streets, adjacent to Simon Fraser University' main downtown campus. Here's their website: http://www.vancouverlookout.com/

The view of the DTES (downtown east side) from there is unparalleled:

Thanks for the tip about the revolving restaurant..it's already on my list of to-do's after the marathon. I'd like to say I'll go up to Grouse Mountain and get a lot of pictures from there, but of course I'll see how I'm doing after the run...is there anything in Vancouver (and I know this sounds cheezeball but) that has a 'glass skydeck' like the Sears Tower in Chicago (where you can get your picture taken from the observation deck)? That would be kinda cool...

Seconded. FWIW when I visited Vancouver/Victoria myself (in Dec/Jan) I thought the whole experience was a bit exotic (considering I didn't even have to change countries), certainly very un-Canadian.

Nice pics. It baffles me how Downtown Eastside can stay that way with real estate values that high out west. Are the current owners ALL waiting for the others to proceed first? Surely some kind of concerted effort could bring the area back to life.

It's quite a complicated issue with an even more complicated solution, one that hasn't been found yet. But the concentration of social services coupled with a big resistance to change (from the agencies, not the actual residents) is making change slow to happen. But the area around the new Woodwards development is night and day compared to how it used to be. I'm hopeful things will change for the better and more diversity of incomes types can all co-exist in the neighbourhood comfortably. Because in my opinion, diversity of all income types makes for a well-rounded neighbourhood.

Vancouver will be a welcome break next month from my devastated home town of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. June will be my biggest road trip ever.
I cannot begin to describe how much I'm looking forward to seeing Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest for the first time.
