I just heard this on the news today. It seems like there is a plan to have the beams from the World Trade Center transported from New York's JFK to downtown Indianapolis to be erected at the newly planned 911 memorial in downtown. Has this been tried in other cities? Just wondering? It seems odd that the Port Authority would give away pieces of the towers.

I'm sorry, but why does Indianapolis have a 911 memorial? Nothing happened there.

We built War Memorials in the United States to WWI, II, and Vietnam all over the place. The reason monuments are built are for people to remember. Not all people can make it to a central monument somewhere. Separate monuments are built in different places, so people can reflect and remember in places that are close by them.

Especially since Mitch Daniels of Indiana called New Yorkers a "bunch of money grubbers" when they sought aid after 9/11.

Not at all unusual. The PA has been giving the steel to multiple cities for memorials in most states around the country. I don't have a problem with it. It's an event of particular interests and impact to the US. I think is appropriate for these other places to have somewhere to pay respects. Not everyone will make it to the memorials in NY or DC.

I come accross these almost every other day it seems, but here's a more local example...

Pieces of New York City's former World Trade Center are being sent to recipients far and wide -- including the Brown City Fire Department.

The department -- one of 1,040 U.S. municipalities to receive a steel beam from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey -- has plans for a public memorial in front of its station at 4090 Main St.

Two years ago, when Groat learned through an e-mail of the possibility the department could obtain a piece of the demolished structure, he applied right away, sending in newspaper clippings and sketches of a memorial the department plans to create outside the Brown City station.

Groat said he received notification in February from the Port Authority the Brown City Fire Department's request had been approved.

"We just about fell over when they told us," Groat said.

Groat now is eagerly awaiting a date from the Port Authority so he and his crew can make the trek to New York to pick up the 20-foot steel I-beam.

"This is not just for Brown City. It's for the whole state," Groat said.

However, there is a limit...

Palm Beach County drops plan to build 9-11 memorial
Cost concerns, losing out on World Trade Center beam end project

March 15, 2011
By Andy Reid, Sun Sentinel

Cost concerns and the inability to get a piece of the fallen World Trade Center prompted Palm Beach County Tuesday to drop plans for a 9-11 memorial.

By the time Palm Beach County tried to get some of the World Trade Center steel being used to create memorials across the country, no more was available.

Also, the potential $200,000 cost comes as the county faces a $50 million budget shortfall.

The County Commission Tuesday decided not to pursue a proposed "9-11 Memorial Plaza" planned at Lake Lytal Park near West Palm Beach.

Instead, county commissioners agreed to continue holding yearly 9-11 "observances" at different locations throughout the area to commemorate the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

I can see the connection now since I learned that there have been people from Indiana who lost their lives in one of the towers. Many police and fire fighters from around the state also traveled to ground zero to help with rescue and recovery efforts.

But remember there doesn't necessarily have to be a literal connection. It's something tangible, more powerful than words that can provide information about the events that took place. Already, children born after 9/11 are 9 years old, and of course children who were too young to remember are now at an age where they can understand our nation's past tragedies and visit a place to learn. As I said previously, not everyone can make it out to NYC so easily.

I think having the memorial next to the canal and fire station makes for a great location since there are many memorials and museums in that area where there are many visitors.

You think that is strange...I was in Padua, Italy this last summer, and they have a 9-11 memorial with a beam from the World Trade Center.

Exactly.

I wanted to capture images of 9/11 memorials from all over in one thread, but haven't really followed upon it...

In case people haven't noticed, the destruction of the World Trade Center didn't affect just New York, or the United States, but countries across the world, from people who have ever lived or worked in the buildings to the people who wish to pay their respects to the ones lost.

Tucson Girl’s Memorial Gets Piece of Trade Center

By MICHAEL WILSON
March 23, 2011

A memorial to the youngest victim of the shooting rampage in Tucson, a 9-year-old girl who was born on 9/11, will include a five-foot length of steel from the World Trade Center.

A statue of an angel, which will incorporate the steel, will memorialize the girl, Christina-Taylor Green. It is to be erected in the outfield of her Little League softball field in a Tucson suburb.

Workers at Kennedy Airport’s Hangar 17, where the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stores debris from 9/11, removed a 272-pound beam on Wednesday; it is to be trucked to Arizona. Similar pieces have been sent to cities and towns and other countries for use in memorials.

...The National 9/11 Flag, which was salvaged from ground zero and has traveled the country for years, was flown at her funeral, a gesture that inspired the statue.
“I knew it was not staying, so I wanted to do something to help them with their grief, involving 9/11 folks,” said Lei Hennessey-Owen, who has created several sculptures of angels that are at the World Trade Center site, the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania site of the crash of United Airlines Flight 93.

Ms. Hennessey-Owen will make a 9-foot-11-inch statue of an angel for the James D. Kriegh Park in Oro Valley, Ariz., where Christina-Taylor’s team plays. The beam will be incorporated into the angel’s skirt, she said. A piece of steel from the Pentagon and a rock from Pennsylvania will also be incorporated into the sculpture, to be dedicated April 1, Ms. Hennessey-Owen said.

The Green family praised the statue in a statement.

“Christina-Taylor wanted to be a symbol of hope for those touched by our nation’s great tragedy on 9/11, the day she was born,” the statement read. “May this field and statue create a legacy of good sportsmanship and fair play for everyone.”

Rockford welcomes ground zero remnants for permanent memorial

More than one hundred people witnessed the procession that took pieces of world trade center from the Clock Tower Hotel to the MetroCentre.

The Winnebago County 9/11 Memorial Committee petitioned the New York Port Authority to bring the steel remnants to Rockford a year ago and they finally arrived today

The two pieces of steel now lie at rest in the MetroCentre.

Members of the Rockford Fire Department drove the pieces in from New York on Saturday. They will be used in a Memorial to commemorate the service of emergency responders on the day of the attack.

"Depending on where you live, you may never get to New York city and never get a chance to see ground zero and what they're doing out there with that site," said Winnebago County 9/11 Chairman Will Pederson. "This is a piece of history with us. It's now going to be with us always. It's going to be a part of Winnebago County, and we're proud to bring it back for them."

Gah! You beat me to it. I'm originally from Minot.

The only problem with the Peace Garden is that you need a passport. You can get INTO it without one, but to get out you need a passport. Kind of confusing if you forget to bring it.

I haven't been up there since they got the beams - I should go take a look this summer when everything is nice and green.

The website for Project 9/11 Indianapolis has all of the details including the numbers to call to order shirts to help fund this effort. Private donations are being accepted on line. It is estimated that $175,000 will be needed to complete this memorial but fund raising has just begun.

I see a core column, a couple of crumpled up perimeter column trees and what appears to be at least two columns from the lowrise buildings, the latter surprisingly popular since 90% of them look like the "Ground Zero Cross." I'm not quite sure where the one in the foreground came from, but I want to say tower core column, specifically one of the 4 box columns that were located between the local elevator shafts.
