Just finished shoveling my driveway and back yard for the 4th time since the snow started falling on Sunday. Took some pics afterward that you might enjoy:

Amazing shots!

I just can't get over how much snow has fallen. Never seen this much in my life!

Every 3 or 4 hours I've been shoveling my driveway so that it doesn't pile up, and since yesterday morning I thought the cycle would never stop, until...about a half an hour ago I saw the sun peaking through a crack in the clouds!:worship:

It may be finally over!

:omg: All I can say is...holy shit. I'd heard there was quite a dump in London but I had no idea how much there was.

We still only have like 2 inches here, and that's just from the accumulation over today (we had about an inch this morning). It's snowing pretty heavily now, though.

3 days in a row schools have been closed...

London Transit is also canceled tomorrow. Same goes with most non-essential public services and many private businesses.

Apparently the city came extremely close to declaring a state of emergency today. The fact is most people still have heat, power, water etc so it never came into effect. Nevertheless, London has asked surrounding cities for help.

Some rough stats as of Tuesday afternoon:

70cm fell at the London Airport
90cm fell in southwest London (where the pictures above were taken)
110cm in northwest London
140+ in Lucan area (not too far north of London)

Another 20-40cm could be coming by the end of Wednesday. Things will clear up on Thursday but more snow is forecasted for Friday and Saturday.

Looks like we're going to have a good old fashioned winter. (And winter doesn't officially start until Dec. 21 :P)

Most I've ever seen in one storm.

True'dat.

I don't think I've ever had back-to-back snow days... but 3 in a row?

Apparently this is the worst storm in over 30 years. It's bad but not brutal. There hasn't been much blowing snow in the city which is a good thing.

Nearly all of us have heat and power too. I've seen several Bell and Rogers vans drive down my street which implies people might have problems with their cable/internet but the basics are still there.

Glad Joe didn't call a state of emergency. Remember the army in Toronto a few years back? Nuts.

In Thunder Bay it is -20, very windy, and there is almost no snow on the ground. Just an inch thick layer of ice. (I was going to say firn but Wikipedia says that firn is something other than what I thought; what we've got on the ground is part actual ice, part snow that melted then refroze and is now a horrible crunchy substance covered in a fine dusting of vehicle exhaust--in some places it is in fact pitch black.)

So... you guys are probably on the better end of this system.

I doubt it will happen again tomorrow. At least where I am it's been sunny and clear all day and the most snow we got was mybe 3 or 4 cm. Has it been snowing more where you are?

I think the main reason there was another snow day today was so they could finally clear the roads and restore services without lots of people out.

I was disappointed in the response of Fanshawe College to this whole thing. Long after the two school boards announced they were closing for the day, Fanshawe College was still open, and college president Howard Rundle even went on CJBK and announced that it was a regular day at Fanshawe and London's "excellent" transit service was running only 5-10 minutes behind schedule. So I decided my test at noon was still on, and I ventured out.

My bus ended up arriving at Fanshawe 45 minutes behind schedule, not 5-10 minutes. A lot of that time was spent stuck on Oxford Street where traffic was dead stopped and several vehicles were either stuck or abandoned; visibility was so low you could only see 100 metres in front of you.

Worst of all, I got there only to find out my test was postponed. By the time I arrived there around 9:50, word was already out that Western was closed. About 6-7 students showed up for my morning class out of the normal 39.

After the college finally closed a crowd of at least 160 students huddled in the cold and deep snow waiting for a bus to come. When a bus showed up, a near-stampede of students ensued with a lot of shoving, and after the bus filled up, at least 80 students were still waiting outside.

Many of us, including myself, were not impressed that Fanshawe remained open and that we showed up on campus only to be told to go home.

The following morning, Western decided overnight they would remain closed, while Fanshawe did not make a statement to that effect until after 6:30; had they decided to open I would not have made it for my 8 AM class.

I can't get over the difference in snow between London and Waterloo. With only being a little over an hour apart, the difference is amazing. There's only maybe 5 cm on the ground here now...

Even closer to London than K-W, West Lorne had absolutely no snow. AM980's Jeff MacArthur heavily criticized the Thames Valley District School Board for closing their schools in West Lorne.

To add to that, the test/exam/final assignment rescheduling has been a disaster. I won't get into too many details, but I'll say that I still don't know when one of my makeup exams is going to take place, and I don't know when the postponed one of my assignments will be due, or if we even have to do it at all.

It's turning into a real comedy of errors. Something tells me Fanshawe did not have a contingency plan in place for this type of situation, which does happen from time to time.

AM980's Jeff MacArthur heavily criticized the Thames Valley District School Board for closing their schools in West Lorne.

Jeff MacArthur is an ignorant wanna-be right-wing radio talk jerk. For years he masqueraded as a "cool rocker guy" when host of the morning show of the now dropped rock station HAWK-FM, and then immediately turned into London's version of Sean Hannity to it's version of Rush Limbaugh (Jim Chapman).

None of these guys have any experience operating a large complex organization, and are instead charged with stirring up the vocal rabble of the community in order to fill up air time with rants by the public for next to no cost to the broadcaster.

The next time jeff MacArthur acts in an executive position over an organization with over 5000 employees spread over several thousand kilometers, he can can have a legitimate opinion. Anything less than that: he's just another brainless right-wing radio blow hard.

I've got beef with Fanshawe's decision too.

On Monday, Western announced they were canceling classes at 10:30am. The LTC announced they were pulling buses off the road at 11:30. Fanshawe didn't make their announcement until 12:30.

I had an exam at 3 that day. Knowing that the bus would take 2 hours or more (I live in Westmount), I had to get my ass moving if there was even a chance of making it on time. I was just about to head out the door but decided to check for an update one last time... finding out it was canceled.

Monday night Western stated that there would be no classes. It took Fanshawe until 6:30am Tuesday to make the same decision.

They finally got it right on Wednesday, giving enough advance notice stating classes were canceled. However this again came after both Western and London Transit announced their cancellations.

Then again, this storm was an exception for the rule. Today while waiting for a bus I saw a sidewalk plow slowly go by. It took the thing 10 mins to clear about 50m of sidewalk... That's just how deep and compacted the snow is.

About an hour ago a snowplow came down my street again. I think this is the 6th my street has been plowed... clearing a few more inches of roadway each time in an effort to widen the street. A snowplow actually got stuck in front of my driveway on Monday... spewing oil all over my driveway as it accelerated.

...And now more snow and freezing rain is predicted to come by the weekend. It's almost like any additional snowfall is nothing compared to what we just got. :haha:

This situation has happened once, although on a smaller scale, in the past five years. In December 2006 there was a similar storm, and Western was shut down for the day (but open again the following day). I was in my undergrad there at that time, and the exam I was supposed to have that day was postponed to Sunday. We knew that day it was moving to Sunday, and there was no waffling around about it, no last-minute changes. Western responded well that time, as they did this time. I have no idea what went on at Fanshawe in 2006.

The sad thing is, Western is a much larger institution than Fanshawe. You'd think there would be more problems at Western.

Over 300 vehicles are stranded and the army has been called in. They're trying to get to them on snowmobiles via the highway's grass median.

However parts of Middlesex county north and west of the city have, along with most, if not all of Lambton County.

Today is the 4th snow day this month. I think the City of London, Western and Fanshawe are acting like wusses. You just can't cancel services like this when snow falls... it's really bad economics.

At least the LTC had enough balls to go against the city and state they're running a normal schedule today. It will be slow, but that's what happens when there's snow. Suck it up, it's better than nothing.

Sorry to say this, but this stranding could have been totally avoid.

402 needs CMS signs in both directions every 30-40 km along it's extent. First one should be right before Wonderland in the WB direction, one just before Hickory Drive in Strathroy, and one before the Watford exit. I actually would put one right in advance of Modeland road as well for weather/border delay reports as well. You could easily have it planned so the sign would show you delay time to cross the border.

Eastbound would be the same, just in advance of major interchanges that provide a spot for drivers to pull over and stop. Most major American states have these signs in the most quiet spots, and this can inform drivers of the conditions ahead, because we know it can be sunny in London, sunny in Sarnia, and right in between another storm like this.

Gates that can be shut would be a good addition at many interchanges along this corridor, and this is a prime reason why the province having jurisdiction along Highway 22/7 for example would be beneficial. Cops simply re-routed cars/vehicles off the 402 onto London Line. If that road is just as bad, they should shut down both and notify drivers on 402. That gives drivers a chance to stop and stay at a hotel in London/Strathroy/Wyoming/Sarnia if they are notified.

Same details could be applied to the 401 between London & Kitchener, and any other snow belts.

However, I will end this post by this: Great work on keeping all safe and sound and that this ended up as a great story.

But then again, after Fanshawe got caught with its pants down last Monday (see my earlier post) and students almost got stranded, who could blame them for taking precautions?

I was reading an article on Wednesday that said as of Wednesday the city had 122cm at the Airport where the official measurements are taken. In the same storm there was a group of employees at a warehouse in Westminster Township where the heat failed. They went outside, tied themselves together like a chain gang, and ventured through 3 feet of snow in open fields through what is now the northern part of the White Oaks subdivision. Nearly a day later they made it to their other warehouse and offices on Southdale Road where there was heat. They became snowed in at that location and had to survive on vending machine food for three days.

The first legit blizzard warning since 1993 has been issued for the London area: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/alerts/wwcaon0040a/caon0383/weather?ref=warnings_citypage

Why do people need to get all hyped up every time there is a mild snowstorm, and give it stupid nicknames, like Snowzilla, Snowmageddon, and my personal favourite, snOMG! I especially hate it when people reuse the same nickname again! :hell: Unless it's the kind of snowstorm we got in December, perhaps people could use a bit of discretion before panicking and freaking out! Just a thought.:)

Well that was a let down. Although my g/f has the day off as they shut down the community health centre in Forest.

I hate the stupid labels. Snowmageddon is just retarded.

I also hate the way every political scandal has the suffix "-gate" appended.

e.g., whitewatergate, trousergate, etc.

"Biggest snow storm of the decade" WTF?! Did it snow 40 cm then melt 30 cm over night? Why is everything canceled? You lazy bastards!!!!!!!

Dundas and Richmond this morning: business as usual.

So much for the hype. I was expecting something massive.

The school boards canceled classes for today. I guess they crapped their pants when Environment Canada issued the first blizzard warning here since 1993.

For the first time ever a snowstorm missed us. That's hard to believe. :haha:

It was business as usual yesterday at Fanshawe, although only 6 of us showed up for my class out of 24. Many assumed the college was closed without checking with local media or the Fanshawe website.

The LTC was even on time. Except for the one driver who stopped at Tim Hortons for 10 minutes and left the doors open.

^I hate it when drivers do that sort of thing. Used to happen ALL THE TIME when I was an undergrad at Concordia U in Montreal (always on the bus). Bastards would stop for a smoke, go in for coffee, shopping, etc. Once, we waited 30 minutes for this busdriver to come out of a consumers distributing store. People were threatening to drive the bus downtown themselves.

The new report regarding city hall's future states that the city has offices in Market Tower, but it doesn't own it.

Regarding the buses, yeah I think we all hate it when the driver pulls over the bus to get a coffee. The most I've waited is 15 mins... seemed like forever.

Last I heard was that Farhi bought the Market Tower.

When I was at Western I once had a driver that stopped in front of St. Joe's Hospital, and he went inside for almost 10 minutes. I was starting to think he was checking himself in, and I was about to call the LTC on my cell phone when he came back out.

Well well..I'm in London for a week, and boom, we get more snow today than the blizzard of 2011 from last week.

Who knew!

16 cm of snow fell on London Airport today apparently. Not bad when they were forecasting 2-4 cm

Yeah the plow better come down my street soon... It will fill up with parked cars this afternoon for Superbowl parties, making road clearing very difficult.

Yes, I'm going to be "that guy" that points out the obvious, but it was 1 year ago that we experienced one of the worst snow storms in the cities history. Makes we wonder when we are going to finally get some real snow this year.

I don't envy you guys up in London, the amount of snow you can get is just outragous. For being less than 2 hrs away, our winter weather can be completely different from you guys. The only lake effect snow we get here has to travel all the way from Lake Michigan.

We got hammered pretty bad last year.

Yeah, last year is the only year that we got more snow than London. It was just one of those freak years that probably won't happen again for a long time. The explanation for it was that most of the snow storms that year stayed further to the south than usual, so with Windsor being the furthest south in Canada, we got clipped by most of them, with London and Toronto being spared for the most part.

There was an inch of snow on the ground this morning, and so far it hasn't melted. Fingers crossed for another snow day, it was fun while it lasted.

quote FROM 2010

I can't get over the difference in snow between London and Waterloo. With only being a little over an hour apart, the difference is amazing. There's only maybe 5 cm on the ground here now...

You guys should share in time for Christmas!

so does Woodstock get considerably less snow then London?

MolsonExport

Woodstock is ground zero for bad weather systems. East past woodstock, and there may be no snow at all for most of the winter. London: some years very heavy snow, other years very light.

I remember that storm well. I was at Fanshawe College at the time and the campus closed in the early afternoon. At the bus stop on Oxford Street there was almost a riot as people fought to get on the one 17 Oxford West bus that showed up.

lol, I took out my rear wheel hemi on a spirited drive those two days.. was the first winter with it. Drove past a city bus, and bobcat in ditches, and people white knuckling it down Oxford, Dundas, and Wellington to not slide... Ah shit it was great. This is why, every year, take your FUCKING CARS TO A PARKING LOT AND TEACH/REMEMBER HOW TO DRIVE ON SNOW

haljackey
Dec 8, 2016, 2:01 AM
Isn't RWD worse in snow compared to FWD? You want weight for traction, so having the drivetrain by the engine gives you some more grip.

Most of the vehicles I typically see in the ditch during winter are big honkin SUVs. Just because you've got AWD / 4x4 doesn't mean you're invincible.

Good tip about going to an empty parking lot. Would be kinda fun and you'll learn! Even though I have new snow tires, I might do some donuts or skids after the first major snowfall after reading this.

yes, very.. especially when you're near 350hp and 400 torque... It's a V8, so lots of go fast juice. It's rough in the winter, but I've never had an issue, and never lost control. If you know what you're doing, practice, and make sure you're not a cunt at the wheel, you're golden. I throw in kitty litter (not sand, as when it leaks, it's a massive pain to clean) in the trunk. About 120lbs helps. I use winter tires (not "snow" as people really seem to not follow that they are better in all of winter). Winter driving really is about being aware at all times of what your car is doing.. I mean, even moreso than the traction control, or abs, or whatever else.

yeah that was fun. 40cm of snow a day for 3 days. The scary thing is given how warm the lakes are this year the potential exists for another major lake effect dump if cold enough air and winds line up with London just right. Hope the lakes quickly cool down to reduce the chances of a major dump.

24-Hour Precipitation Outlook from the weather network:
40-50 cm of snow from Sunday Overnight to Monday Evening; higher amounts in snow squalls

That was roughly doubled.

Fast forward 7 years and we have thunderstorms in December lol

I remember the storm well. At the time I was working for the provincial government and the office was closed for almost three days because of the storm.

I remember how, on the day after the storm ended and the roads had been cleared, I went out to my car as the office had been re-opened and noticed how quiet and still the world was around me because so many people were still at home and not going into work. The quietude was eerie.
