November 2010
General Authority of Civil Aviation has awarded Saudi Binladin Group a $7.2bn contract to build
a new terminal and infrastructure at Jeddah international airport.

The three-year project will see the addition of a 670,000 sq m terminal with 94 aircraft bays to replace the two
existing facilities currently handling airport traffic, as well as 'the world's tallest airport control tower'
at 133 metres, and infrastructure linking the terminal with roads and the planned high-speed railway that will
join Jeddah with Mecca and Medina, GACA said.

The expansion project is aimed at raising the capacity of the King Abdul Aziz International Airport to 30 million
passengers per year from the current traffic of 17 million passengers, the regulator said.

"This project is set apart from anything we have worked on before because the client has asked us to go through environmental certification of the airport, following the LEED standard," explains Starling.
"This is a US standard for approving the value of a building, in this case the airport, in the field of sustainable development. To go through such a procedure for such a huge terminal will be the first time in the world that it will be applied to an airport of this size."

in Jeddah, authorities want to build an airport city that will include hotels, office buildings, housingunits, malls and even a flight academy. Four prequalified consortia including Australia's Lend Lease Corporation, Saudi Oger and Saudi Real Estate Company (Akaria), as well as US developer Hines, are expected to submit bids before the end of May. The contract is scheduled to be awarded by August.

those renderings look stunning the general outline seems like a sleeker and more beautiful version of the Beijing Capital International Airport.

and the interior of the terminal will look very cool i think if they stick to the renderings. and the green areas are very interesting aint many airports that have parks.

but will they keep the old terminal or demolish it ?

i think they will keep it for a while, if you check the renders u will see that there is "future expansions" planned, buildings that look like an "X" , i think that the old one will be replaced when the new airport gets expanded (which isn't in the far future), this is the official airport for Makkah's pilgrims, there is no airport in makkah (due to the only muslim policy its hard to have an airport).

The new project to upgrade Jeddahs King Abdul Aziz International Airport will begin next week, an official said Tuesday.
The project will be completed in three years and accommodate up to 35 million passengers a year, more than double the current annual traffic of 17 million passengers, said Waleed Al-Humaidi, Assistant Deputy of the Makkah Emirate for Development.
Al-Humaidi, who is also the chairman of the Makkah Region Council, reviewed the development project at a meeting in the emirate that was attended by Fouad Ghazali, chairman of the Councils Projects Committee. Work at the airport is focusing on terminals and other service areas, which have infrastructure shortcomings, members of the committee have said.
The new development project has been designed to address the South and North terminals dilapidated infrastructure, Al-Humaidi said. In November, Saudi Binladin won a SR27 billion contract to build the new infrastructure and terminals.

Hi All,

To my knowledge, the 3 pictures showing the old airport are Riyahd King Khaled International Airport.

Best Regards
