If you've been hanging around this forum for a while, you have probably stumbled upon an Austin thread. This thread was probably centered on the more photogenic parts of the city: downtown, South Congress, the lakes and hills.

In this thread I steered well clear of those areas in search of grit, yes grit, in Austin. I even stopped the car a couple of times. Wish I had a better camera, but here goes...

Austin outside of the iconic central city neighborhoods and its affluent suburbs can look a lot like a typical Texas small town with grungy metal buildings and wood-frame houses and ranch style tract homes on oak shaded streets with the occasional sprawl growth mixed in. It really reminds me of an enormous Temple or Bryan, which makes sense when you think about it.

Cool thread. I've honestly not seen some of those places. I did recognize several of them though.

Some of the best err, worst? grit is east of Austin. Highway 71 especially is mostly unchanged, even with the airport nearby.
