In the 19th Century, Bangor supplied the lumber that built Boston and New York...

You know what I'd like to see? You somehow collaborate with Thundertubs on his tours of small-ish Midwest towns. That'd be a serious force to be reckoned with!

Anyways, great thread - and coverage of Bangor; I enjoyed how you captured buildings of both civic/commercial AND residential uses.

I love the small-ish but urban feel and the irregular shaped downtown blocks. Makes for the some fun irregularity in the architecture.

Photos tip-top as always.

We don't see alot of New England here outside of Boston.

Excellent! Bangor is one of my favorite New England downtowns. It has more buildings from the '10's and '20's than most downtowns in that region. Maybe because Bangor wasn't as dependent on the textile industry, which was in the middle of a mass exodus down to the Carolinas at that time.

This was a nice surprise.

You are a very good architecture photography, awesome work. Ive always wanted to see Bangor, a lot of country singers for whatever reason sing about it.

That was an entertaining set of pics. I really like Bangor, quite a nice urban outpost in the far NE.

btw, looks like the greenery has grown quite a bit in the last six years

It looks nicer than I thought... I happened to drive in this city a couple of times while on my way to the coast, but I never explored it properly.

I've never been to Bangor before, thanks!

Spent many summers along the Maine coast though. Great small towns with the nice main streets, churches and commons, with victorian homes. I recommend Camden, Maine, has a great harbor to just sit, relax and watch the boats come and go.

Great pics man, Bangore is a lively place, especially when school is in up the street in Orono at UMaine. My cousin will be starting her junior year there in a few weeks.

Glad to see someone else has a summer Maine connection! The family has a cottage in Pemaquid, which is two peninsulas south of Camden (near Damariscota and Newcastle). Camden is an absolute gem, picture-perfect in every way. The views from the top of Mount Battie are hard to beat. Did you ever make it to Rockland? The Farnsworth Art Museum has the world's best collection of Wyeth pieces - all three of Wyeths, too.

Lovely. New England is lucky to have such a really great collection of medium-sized cities. The urbanism is places like Bangor, Lowell and Worcester blows away much larger places south and west.

Great set, the place is more impressive than I previously thought. Maybe it is just your pictures, but it looks like a formerly important center which has been frozen in time, but still has some new vibrancy.

Nice pictures. Bangor seems like a pretty nice place with a good building stock. I was in the area about 10 years ago but never went into the city. There are some nice waterfalls nearby, though, I can tell you that.

You did Quebec City, Halifax, and then Bangor (your second American city outside of Michigan if I'm correct). Did you spend a week driving around or something?

Ha! My mother in law used to run the wine & cheese shop/cafe in this (http://segaert.zenfolio.com/img/s5/v4/p917842355-5.jpg) building - a beautifully rennovated warehouse.

You've caught the strong, solid feel of the old lumber town really well - great set!

Nice pictures, you gotta love New England for it's 19th development.

Bangor has an impressive urban fabric. A solid downtown and a lot of mansions and leafy older neighbourhoods. It's really not very big but you can feel that it is the major center for its region.

Maine has some nice natural scenery and the northern part is very sparsely populated. The people seemed laid back and friendly. It seemed a lot like Canada with American flags.

Btw, Stephen King's house is in one of the photos.

My family and I went on a road trip for vacation with stops in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Maine. We really enjoyed our time on the East Coast, and I took plenty of pics (though not of every place we went, since it was a family vacation).

Great set, Flar!! I went through Bangor when I was vacationing with my folks back in the mid-80s. I only have a vague recollection of it. I do remember a couple of taller buildings there, but thats about it!!

Awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing! I have never been to Bangor but it reminds me of many of the small post-industrial southern New England cities I am familiar with (New London, Norwich, New Bedford and Fall River). I'll hopefully be posting pictures from those cities in the near future!

Great job of presenting Bangor!

My first visit to the US was when I was 12 years old on a trip to play hockey in Stoneham Mass. The first bus stop was Bangor, and for some reason that memory was ingrained in me.
When I first heard Patty Griffin's song "Burgandy Shoes" it brought me right back there. She's from Old Town Maine and the song is about her childhood and mother. The song starts off with: "We wait for the bus that's going to Bangor...".

Anyway, someone mentioned above about Country singers and Bangor, here's a link to Patty's song for anyone interested:

thanks for the pics!
