View Full Version : OSLO as seen by a poor Swede (srsly, $25 for a small pizza?!?)

Swede
Jul 28, 2010, 8:18 PM
The last weekend in July is traditionally the time for the annual SSC NordBalt meet-up. This year it was Oslo's turn. Worst turn-out yet :( 4 Norwegians, 1 Swede and a Canadian. This didn't stop us from seeing as much of the city as possible, eating insanely expensive pizza, downing a few beers, going bright red from the sun one day (that'd be me) & getting rained on (this being Norway after all).

Here's the top 134 photos I took, in no particular order:

Dammit, Scandinavia looks so beautiful! I love the topography Oslo has surrounding the city. Gotta travel to that part of the world some time.

Stellar thread Swede. Oslo looks like it has a very nice mix of serene and chaotic in it. Love the modern architecture.

Gracias guys. Oslo does have a beautiful setting. Scandinavia is awesome to travel in (what? no, I'm not promoting us at aaallllllll), most people speak English for one.

Not all the pics are from the City of Oslo, it's from three different counties. All in Greater Oslo tho.

What a project (http://i27.tinypic.com/2utq3jb.jpg)! And I loved the winding roads studded with colorful, historic architecture here (http://i27.tinypic.com/vmzlhi.jpg).

Definately going to travel there some day. The best I can do right now is go to Solvang California and get myself some Ableskiever and Frikadeller...

is this a silo converted into an apartment complex??? VERY INTERESTING! There are some unused old silos in Porto Alegre... it would be a good idea to make them into apartment complexes... do you have more info on them?

how tall will be the buildings under construction which we can only see the cores so far? Its very weird for me to such a short building with a big concrete core and metal structure around. In fact, I dont think even the tallest buildings in Brazil are built core first (and anyway, metallic skeletons are RARE here)

Really cool thread!

I noticed KPMG and PWC logos on top of the shiny new towers, wheres Ernst&Young?? ;)

I second Trantor on the silo-to-housing conversion, that's something a whole bunch of North American cities should look into. Any more info on the one you shot a photo of would be much appreciated.

the name of it is Grunerloekka Studenthus, and it was a silo built in 1950 converted to student apartments in 2001.

I did indeed. Or, the train went by way of Karlstad (3 hours from Oslo, 3½ from Stockholm - the line on the Norwegian side sucks).

They'll be about as tall as the ones in that district already topped out & completed. Not exactly as tall, as that's against directives from the City iirc. The steel skeleton is now really common for officebuildings here in Stockholm at least, and saw a few short ones going up in Oslo too.

There's another silo converted to housing in Oslo, one we went into and to the top of (that's where we had the bbq!). One of the Oslo forumers (over on SSC) lives there. There's more silos->housing conversions in Scandinavia, Copenhagen has a couple too iirc.

Oslo looks fantastic! We haven't had many Oslo threads on this forum before, but I can't recall any that have been this good. The city has a natural setting somewhat reminiscent of Seattle due to the hills, greenery, and water.

Nice pictures. Oslo is one city that I want to visit (but I obviously should wait until I'm rich). The city looks great, and Norway's countryside has always been spectacular ever since I've seen it in pictures a few years ago.

Excellent pictures! I recognized the 7-11 in pic 35, it's a couple of blocks away from where I stayed in Oslo last fall. Beautiful city, and great to walk around, but if I'd stayed more than a few days I would've gone bankrupt!
