i've gotta say the Main Street Garden Park has changed downtown for the better, it's no longer a ghost town at night

Some nice new buildings there. If Dallas capped a few of those freeways and really developed its streetcar network, there would be LOADS of potential to develop an expansive, contiguous, and hyper-dense urban environment.

I really like Dallas, especially the newer infill areas of Uptown. It's a huge city with a lot of money and you can tell by the buildings, cars, fashion, etc.

While I enjoyed all of the new towers and cool old houses, I couldn't help but wonder what is the deal with all those freeways in/around Downtown? It was as if they were suffocating it! That's just sad! At any rate, great thread!

The CBD has been strangled by freeways for the past 30 years, but there are things in the works to reconnect the districts. Woodall Rodgers Freeway is currently being decked by a park (http://www.woodallrodgerspark.org/), and there are talks of additional deck parks over parts of IH 30.

Interesting. Planning a trip to OK, the Metroplex and the greater Hill Country down old I-44 and 35 when things cool down, not going down there when its averaging 95-97 for days on end up here. :hell: (shouldn't be a mean face, just a confused, heat stroked face).

Love the aerial shots L, some of your best. Gotta say I'm not a huge Dallas fan (well, at least not Jerry Jones & the Cowboys :yuck: ), it is an impressive looking city. Wonderful people shots too (I know you like taking those).

Too many good shots to single out, but this one did bring back some sad memories:

^i'm jealous. there's a lot of nice eye candy in that hood, and not just cars and buildings ;)

thanks for the replies everyone.

the cloudy aerials are the consolation prize from the bad weather, and then mechanical problems that made me miss two flights valentine's day weekend. (i also got nice aerials of Columbia seen here (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=181110) i also missed a buddy's wedding, and caught a stomach flu from an office picnic i wouldn't have gone to if i hadn't missed the first flight.

Truly exceptionally well done .... and befitting the largest metro in the State of Texas and in all of the South, and the 4th largest in the nation with Dallas just behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

This clearly represents the 21st century city-state axes of the greatest nation on Earth ... with its four largest metros represented by New York City in the East, Los Angeles in the West, Chicago in the North, and Dallas in the South.

The pictures show the great density that has developed around the Downtown Dallas core where explosive growth of highrises has linked Uptown, Victory Park, Oak Lawn, West Village/Cityplace, the West End, the Medical District/World Trade Center, and Downtown into one large urban fabric.

With the Woodall Rogers Freeway urban deck park, the new 42 story Museum Tower, the new massive Omni Hotel project, and along with the 400 foot tall Calatrava Bridge all under construction the cityscape will get another major boost within the next few months as these additions fill the skyline.

You WILL need to come back and shoot some updated photos!

Thanks for an excellent photographic montage of in-town Urban Dallas!

Here is a shot of the Calatrava Bridge under construction from about six weeks ago. The shot is taken from the western side of Dallas looking at Downtown from Arlington. You can see the first arch standing erect in the air; the completed bridge will be composed of three arches interwoven with a sculptural metal wiring effect.

I want to see your beautiful photography of this bridge, so please come back and update your photos in the next few months!

Good to note that this shot was taken from downtown Fort Worth. You can see the Arlington water tower and get a good a good perception of the actual size of the arch.

Great pictures. I was in Dallas back in February and I was pretty impressed from what I saw of the city. I currently live in Atlanta and I am considering a move to the Metroplex in the future, and these pictures do show a side to Dallas that a lot of people don't realize is there.

I would love to think that your optimistic view of the area is correct..The truth is that the area is more like a big sprawling parking lot. It does not even begin to compare with NYC or Chicago. I suppose you could compare it to LA (allot of sprawl and freeways) but LA has a little more character in my opinion. Even Downtown Dallas (which cannot compare to DT Fort Worth in terms of activity) is fairly spread out.
Im not saying that DFW is without its charms. Denton is a really vibrant college town with a fantastic art and music scene. Fort Worth has some great museums, parks and trails along the Trinity river, and a pretty active downtown.

Overall the area is more suited for those who enjoy driving everywhere they go and seeing nothing but shopping malls, strip malls (and clubs), and restaurant chains as far as the eye can see. I am from here so I certainly hope for good things to happen here. I do have to be honest though and admit that we have allot of shortcomings.

All that being said..Ya its totally better than Houston!
