Some weeks ago in June I visited Copenhage with my girlfiend. I visited Ørestad, Arken in Ishoj and the city center. It the same day that Denmark was playing a soccer game in South Africa, so a lot of activity was going on.

First out is Ørestad. I haven’t been there for more then a year ago and it has changed a lot with huge development, new highrises under construction and canals.

It has now company with the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the chain’s first hotel in Scandinavia.

Crowne Plaza was completed in 2009. At 85 m, 25 floors, it is the 2nd tallest hotel in Denmark. Together with the new World Trade Center that is u/c, it will be called Copenhagen Towers.

Bjerget (“the mountain”), a new residential building (from 2008), designed by BIG architects, with a rare design that is built like a mountain on one side. On the other side you can see the parking garage going into the building so you can park your right outside your apartment. Though the design is interesting, it looked stiff and deserted and many of the apartments were vacant.

The picture of a mountain that you can see on the wall is actually built up by holes.

Now heading to Arken in Ishøj, a western suburb of Copenhagen.

Brondby with its many coloured highrises.

A park in Ishøj center. Ishøj is very segregated with commie blocks at the center were mostly immigrants live, near a large shopping mall in the center of the suburb. A tunnel goes under a large road and there, closer to the sea, is mostly villas where wealthy Danes live.

Arken is a spectacular modern art museum, with an architecture that has become famous because it is designed to remind of a ship. We were lucky to see the exhibitions for free because we arrived just before closing time. Unfortunately it is not allowed to take photos inside, a real pitty.

Awesome thread, I love how they are building the new towers outside of the historic areas in order to preserve their character. That is some pretty sweet modern architecture.

Bjarke Ingels Group has a lot of nice projects. I heard Bjarke speak earlier this summer and I'm pretty sure he said he lives in the VM Houses (the structure with the triangular shaped balconies).

Wow what a contrast. You can really tell which type of architecture actual humans actually prefer.

Yes, you can clearly see the contrast between the crowded city center and the almost abandoned Orestad. On the other hand, all store in Orestad are concentrated to the Field mall, so that's were the people in Orestad are.

There is some amazing modern residential architecture there. Ikea must do well there.

The modern neighborhood looks great in pictures, but is it a place that fosters creativity, comfort and community? I'm not sure I've seen a modernist neighborhood ever perform as well as the architecture of diverse forms. In some ways we've taken a form that was specifically developed as a contrast to the older architecture of Europe with all its nooks and crannies. This bare form works and looks great as a contrast, but I'm not sure it can carry an entire neighborhood. There is something cold about it, but it does look amazing from afar.

Thanks for the pictures. The modern, clean designs of Orestad look amazing. The bustling and dense City Centre is also beautiful too and it makes a nice contrast with Orestad (modern/old; quiet/vibrant).

Danes tend to prefer Danish design over Swedish and Ikea isn't seen on very positively here - and certainly not by the crowd moving to Ørestaden :)

Here in Sweden it's the opposite. We have Ilva here in Sweden, most Swedes prefer Ikea. :) I personally prefer the design of Ilva's furniture, though they are more expensive.

I just bought a new Sony DSC-W350 digicam (14MP). Yesterday I visited Køge, but spent the late afternoon in downtown Copenhagen (again),mostly around Strøget and Rådhuspladsen. Køge will be presented in a separate thread.

This is how lively Copenhagen looks on a common Sunday:
