That sounds unbearably hot. What is 100? In the high 30s I think? Yikes. I think Edmonton's record high of all time is 38 or 39°C.

Photo quality is fantastic as usual, Sekkle. Keep it up! :)

Damn, you really got into some down and dirty areas. I loved it all and can't wait until parts 3 through 12 ;). I think I liked part 2 even better than part 1.

ps. Those 2 victorians hiding out west are still looking good (for phx).

Severe race issues + racism + sprawl + blazing hot = Hell on earth in my opinion.

Good job on the photos though

Great photos! I actually live in Phoenix, and yes it's hot, but only in the summer. The late summer, winter, and early summer is perfect! And I'm getting pretty tired of this "racism" crap, but again, great photos!

If you think it was hot today, it's supposedly going to be 114 on Wednesday and 116 on Thursday.

Great work. Some of those photos are really reminiscent of the atmosphere of the old west. I think my favorites are the shot of a couch under a palm tree, the broken organ. They are, as are many of your shots, a little bit surreal and inspire reflection.

Although I would never live in Phoenix by choice (I hate the heat, be it dry or humid). I still find it fascinating, and would love the check it out, but only during the winter months.

You really did a beautiful job in highlighting some of its beauty, thanks for sharing.

My bad if it looked too ghetto - I tend to focus on grit, guess I didn't mix in enough shiny stuff.

The pic you quoted isn't showing up, but I think it's this one, right?...

that's 11th ave between Buckeye & I-17. Actually, the rails run all the way up to the freight mainline north of Grant. It's a pretty shitty situation for anyone who wants to drive across them in anything less than a 4-wheel-drive truck... those ruts are huge.

I don't know, I liked the contrast of the grit with the modern. I will say that Phoenix is a uniquely beautiful city, its always pretty stunning to see a sunset over the towers on Central after you've been away for a while.

yuh, thats the one. So based on the location, it isn't some remnants of street trolley tracks I'd just never seen before.

By far the best Phoenix photo thread ever! Great job.

Very realistic thread of Central Phoenix. With the exception of the very small CBD, the inner-core has been decaying rapidly over the past 15 years. In a short 10 minute walk, one can leave the clean, safe DT to some of the worst neighborhoods imaginable.

Worst neighborhoods imaginable? really? Didn't you used to live here? You move away and now you talk shit everytime someone mentions Phoenix?

Look, pal, if you think the worst neighborhoods in Phoenix (Maryvale, Sunnyslope, and South Phoenix... all of which are 15-20 minutes by CAR from the CBD anyway) are even comparable to the worst in LA, Chicago, NY, Miami, Houston, Detroit, Philadelphia, San Diego, Atlanta, ETC. you are really retarded.

My guess is something bad happened to you while you were living here and now you have to take every chance you get to make a dig at Phoenix. No room for that here.

I like Phoenix. It's quite diverse culturally and the city for as long as I can remember has been growing at an unprecedented pace. I never got to enjoy the CBD but I've admired it many times when driving by. It's not the largest by any means, but it's beautiful in it's own right. Good job.

One just needs to walk to Garfield, 1/2 mile to the east, or along West Van Buren, starting at 3rd ave, or just cross the tracks south of the ballpark...

you are really retarded.

Name calling, now that's classy.

Keep guessing. Nothing bad ever happened to me in Phoenix. BTW, Didn't you mention that you don't leave your house without packing heat? Seems like someone is afraid of their surroundings.

I actually enjoyed my time in Phoenix and care about the quality of life of the city, (I'll still be reading up and posting in the SW forum) but I'm not going to sugar coat the reality of the level of urban decay and city neglect of PHX's "neighborhoods" surrounding the CBD. I think everyone of us PHX forumers have complained about this.

We complain about the appearance of the neighborhoods, not the safety. When you say they are some of the worst neighborhoods imaginable, that reads as "dangerous" or any synonyms you choose to use in this example. The fact of the matter is you could drop me in the middle of Garfield at 3AM and I would feel drastically safer than I would in say West Philadelphia at 3PM. And yes, I carry... I was shot at from a car in Maryvale (a neighborhood that I referenced that is not close to downtown) and have a little baggage because of it. I don't go to Maryvale anymore unless I absolutely have to. The fact of the matter is I've made myself a complete target for a thief on dozens of occasions downtown (blackout drunk carrying my wallet and iPhone in my hand down the street, leaving my unlocked car on fifth street because I couldn't get in my front gate, etc.) and nothing has EVER happened or even almost happened for that matter. I walked home from Main Ingredient on 7th Street and Virginia the other day, all the way down 7th to my place on Monroe, and the only three people I encountered at midnight were a few cracked out bums who actually said hello to me. I've done similar walks in Chicago (michigan/grand to state/monroe) and the bums there in the middle of the night are not only unfriendly, but they are very aggressive. So please, before you speak again, think of things in relative terms to other cities of the same size, and tell me that Central Phoenix is "one of the worst neighborhoods imaginable."

Honestly, I just have my panties in a twist because this is the city I grew up in and this is the city I have invested my life in, and this is the city I will continue to support for the rest of my life. When someone comes in and not only bashes my city, but also the neighborhood that I live in and have spent my hard earned money to help improve, it becomes personal.

no, he is some crazy dickhead that thinks he is a preacher and talks about god every morning from 9am till about noon or 1pm. I don't believe he has a job, and I used to be the doorman at the hotel across the street from his corner and hated the guy because I had to listen to him to do my job.

One day, some ridiculously whacked out of his mind bum thought the guy was yelling at him, and knocked him the fuck out. It was truly one of the highlights of recent memory for me.

Great work, Sekkle. I too have a fascination with graffiti (I'm actually working on a research project on graffiti at Portland State University). I've seen many of your photo threads in the past and I really like the direction you are going with your photography. You've been increasingly including the "grittier" aspects of the city which have been neglected in many of the photo threads on this site. To me, these aspects can be some of the most beautiful parts of urban landscapes. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see more Portland threads when you return, or any city for that matter.

Very nice thread! Lovely photos and a good mix of junky areas with nice areas. Maybe a bit on the gritty side for my personal taste, but most of us who live here usually trend in the opposite direction with our pictures, so I suppose it balances out.

Does any other City on this forum get so many snide remarks and backhanded compliments every time there's a thread about it? Its ridiculous. How do people like this function in real life "Oh its nice to meet you sir, you're a lot nicer than the a-hole I initially pegged you as!"

How are we 'playing the victim'? In EVERY Phoenix thread outside the SW Subforum, Phoenix gets bashed and at best back handed complimented, its ridiculous. Just once Id like to see someone put up some photos and people just act like civil adults and not shit on the city the photos are of.

Sorry to expect adult behavior though, I guess thats asking a lot.
