Nice pictures! I'm glad to see you covering some Southern places again like you cover Pennsylvania and nearby areas. The Fan District looks like a great neighborhood.

Isn't some of this the "Uptown" neighborhood, as indicated by the signage on the telephone poles? Can someone confirm or refute this?

Some of it is Churchill, and some is in Jackson Ward. I should have pointed that out.

Definitely a sweet hood. Unfortunately, the South doesn't have a lot of truly great urbanity, but the small amount we do have is excellent.

Still my favorite neighborhood anywhere. Literally where it all started for me, too. Meaning, my parents lived there when I was conceived, and it was the first neighborhood I lived in. If only I hadn't been born in the hospital across the river. Incidentally, also where I first lived on my own.

The Fan. Sigh...

Richmond has got to be the most under rated city in the country. This is amazing.

Richmond is so quiet on a national scale. I always forget it's there. I never hear any news coming out of Richmond.

It looks like a mix between Wash DC, Cincinnati and Charleston, SC.

What an amazing neighborhood. I'd never really seen it before and am very impressed. Richmond, or at least this part of it, always seems to be left out when one thinks of beautiful southern cities. I certainly won't leave it out in the future. Its look is not quite like anything else.

Not pictured: Class IV whitewater next to downtown. Yeah, Richmond's got things going for it alright. It seems to be a bit better every year when I go back.

I was looking at google maps street view of Richmond and its amazing how intact that city is and how dense it is. I had no idea any city in the south other than new orleans looked like that.

I always knew Richmond was like this but I was a little alarmed about the crime rate. I think it has come down a bit though. I even thought of moving there a couple of times. My cousin lives there and loves it. I would prefer to stay within the city limits because the surrounding counties are extremely conservative and fundamentalist.

I am glad I never moved now. I love living right near Pittsburgh(one of the nation's best cities) and I hope to live even closer before too much longer, but I can still go to town any day I want even now.

first post here. i live in the fan district and i can attest to it's beauty. people are generally shocked when i give them driving tours and they see just how large the historic urban fabric is in person. the Fan and the Museum District are continuous and intact for miles. and then there's Church Hill, the neighborhood that's even older than the Fan, which sits on the hill opposite from the "downtown" area, overlooking Shockoe Bottom. Church Hill is Richmond's original neighborhood and is also mostly intact. unfortunately most people only see the Broad Street area of Richmond, which is a shell of it's former self. there are too many retail storefronts along Broad that the city can't support economically, so they sit boarded up or have cheap low-rent uses that attract a vagrant crowd.

richmond is a graceful old city that should always be included when considering architecture of the south. but it's unique in that it's a formal southern city that developed with northern style homes (DC, Baltimore, Philly). i've read the Fan is the largest collection of original victorian architecture in the world. the neighborhood is zoned to allow small businesses on certain cross streets and certain long streets. i live directly around the corner from a small restaurant/bar, and a family owned mini-grocery store that are on one of those cross streets. you don't need a car to get around the Fan. i LOVE living here, and after I finish grad school i plan on staying.

p.s. i got a kick out of looking through the pics, wondering if my place was going to pop up! my apartment, which is carved out of a rowhome built in 1895, is shown several times in your pictures, which doesn't bother me one bit.

This thread is a testament to the City Beautiful movement -- the Fan is one of it's shining examples.

Richmond does fly a bit under the radar as far as Southern cities go, as does Alexandria, VA.
