Chicago's new import: Coney islands (http://detnews.com/article/20100213/METRO/2130302/Chicago-s-new-import--Coney-islands)
Michigan transplants can't wait for hometown dog

Transplanted Detroiters, rejoice: Coney Island is coming to the Windy City.

Leo's Coney Island will be the first of the many incarnations of Metro Detroit's coney islands to export the chili-, onion- and mustard-topped hot dog outside the state when it opens a franchise in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood Monday.

"Native Detroiters are literally ready to rip our door off the hinges," said Lou Goldhaber, co-owner of the Chicago Leo's Coney Island. "It's a total built-in customer base."

I just saw a news story on WGN and the place has been packed. They certainly did end up with a rather prime location right in the heart of the Southport Corridor - only 1.5 blocks north of the Southport brown line stop and 2 blocks south of Addison.

given the preponderance of ex-michiganders living in lakeview, i suspect they'll be making money hand over fist. they may even pick-up some chicago converts as well, though chicago-style dogs are pretty thoroughly entrenched in this town. i'd still be willing to give one of these coney things a whirl, i'll have to check 'em out next time i'm up on southport.

now, what i'm REALLY waiting for is a franchise of cincinnati's famous skyline chili to open up in chicago. my aunt brings me a dozen cans of the stuff every time she comes up here, but it's just not the same as being at the restaurant.

I got the email about the Coney Island last week. I'm excited to go. But what I'm REALLY excited about is that Detroit based Happy's Pizza has finally made it out to Chicago. But it's NOT the pizza you eat there... it's the chicken and shrimp. Only catch is you have to order 20 minutes in advance because the food is all made from scratch. I hope Chicagoans opt for this business over Popeyes and Dominoes. Currently Happy's are all on the southside.

I don't like Domominos and that Little Ceasars in Wicker Park on Milwaukee is half-assed. I don't like Hungry Howies. Jets is okay, send buddy's pizza out here though.

One thing I noticed about Chicagoans though, and I might need Steely Dan to correct me on this if I'm wrong, but it seems like we order from more home-grown establishments. Seems like people spend more on pizza out here, as opposed to when I was in Michigan, "whatever the cheapest and tastes good"

i can't speak for all chicagoans, but i would never dare dream of ordering pizza from a big national chain like domino's, little caesar's, papa john's, pizza hut, or any of that garbage. life is WAY too friggin short to eat cheap, shitty pizza.

i mainly eat only two types of pizza, lou malnati's deep dish or chicago style thin crust from any number of the hundreds of one-off mom-n-pop joints around town.

chicago is pizza heaven.

Jet's really is good as far as fast-food pizza is concerned. Domino's has gotten better since it's new recipe. Little Caesars should just be ashamed of itself. Still, fast-food pizza leaves a lot to be desired if you enjoy the real thing.

BTW, if you'll allow me to get ethnic for a moment, chili ain't chili if it don't run; just sayin'. Chili should got into you the same way it comes out. I don't like hotdogs, myself, so Coney Dogs aren't exactly my thing, either, but if you're going to put chili on it, you better make sure it's chili and not some dried -out catfood.

I Went To Leos Coney Island

And got absolutely nothing. I rode my bike up from downtown through the cold to Lakeview. Arrived, saw the place packed but they had closed at 8:00, and it was 8:23. Guess they are extending their hours to 10:00 soon. It's probably the nicest looking Coney Island (inside) I've ever seen. Big flatscreens everywhere. The exterior screams Detroit. It's your typical EIFS tan facade and big neon lettering......though the architecture is original to a previous business. It definitely contrasts with the late 1800's brick architecture all around it. But I like it that way.

My stomach wasn't spared unhealthy cuisine. I headed right over to Harold's Chicken

i absolutely love the Eliot Ness amber, but Bell's Amber and Oberon just take the cake in this competition. Either way, both breweries are a notch above Goose Island. The best Chicago-area brewery? Three Flyods, bar none. Its in Indiana, but the unbelievable quality of that beer makes that a forgivable oversight ;)

i much prefer skyline. my family even did a blind taste test several years ago, and everyone liked skyline better. goldstar has a little bit more kick in the heat department, but they also use MSG in their recipe and that's just fucking weak. skyline keeps it real.

ehhh, as someone without a horse in this race, i don't know if i can totally agree with that. great lakes burning river is one my favorite beers made in the midwest. bell's makes fantastic stuff too, no doubt, but if given a choice to have any beer in either breweries' line-ups, i'd probably go with a burning river, though i haven't tried every brew in bell's extensive line-up.

I saw an episode of Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives the other day that featured G&A Coney Island in Baltimore. It seemed to be identical to the Coney dogs served in Detroit. The ordering convention was even the same - "2 on 1" or "2 up on 1".

Anyone know the history on this? I was dissapointed that no reference was made to Detroit to explain the story on this.

From the website: http://www.gandarestaurant.com/

G&A opened its door in 1927 by Andy Farantos' grandfather. Back then, our restaurant was one of the most famous places in Baltimore to go get a hot dog (for only 15 cents) and a milkshake. Today, G&A is the home of Baltimore's best Coney Island hot dogs, Coney burgers, and so much more!

What kind of Hot Dog goes in this Detroit Coney?

A Chicago Dog has to be pure RED beef.

it all boils down to what you're used to i guess. having been raised on chicago's vienna beef dogs, whenever i have a dog in another town, they just don't have anywhere close to the same amount of flavor that a vienna beef dog has. and beyond just being 100% beef, chicago dogs also use natural casings which give them really good snap when you bite into them. a hot dog without a natural casing just isn't worth the effort in my opinion. the dogs that they use in the coneys at skyline chili in cincy are especially weak, that's why i just stick to the conventional 5-way chili (chili, spaghetti, onions, beans, and cheese) and skip the inferior dog altogether. i suspect that the dogs used in detroit-style coney islands wouldn't impress me much either, but i have yet to head up to this new coney island on southport to check it out for myself.

ColDayMan
Mar 11, 2010, 8:51 PM
Cincinnati coney dogs themselves are intentionally weak to enhance the flavor of the chili. And thus, they use pork. Well, that and Cincinnati IS called Porkopolis as it was a huge slaughterhouse for pigs back when. And thus, soap. And thus, Proctor & Gamble. So pork is tied with the city's history and thus, it's used on the hot dogs.

I personally never got Chicago hot dogs (and New York's...and the coney dogs of Cincinnati and Detroit). Useless food, in all honesty. I'll take that Lou's pizza anyday!

Try some broasted chicken. It'll do you good to get off the hot dog train! :slob:

You guys and your processed meat products. Gimme a porksteak or some ribs, yo.

Yeah, no kidding. How I was raised is that a hot dog or sausage of any kind or quality is kids food or a party food. "Gourmet sausage/hot dog" is an oxymoron as far as I'm concerned. :haha:

That we can agree upon. Damn, I wish there was a Chicken Shack in Cleveland, with their broasted potatoes too :) . Although there is a new Happy's Pizza & Chicken that just opened up on Detroit Road near me where there was once a Popeye's...

As you should know, Dayton's the capital of that broasted chicken thing and they JUST opened another ghetto-fabulous place and it has a chicken mascot with Kanye West sunglasses. But the chicken...oh so good!

^ And with Lancer's burning down, only Hot Sauce Williams and perhaps a few unknown others are left in Cleveland. I'll trade you that one chicken joint for about half of Cleveland's Slavic (and other eastern European) places. We have way too many places serving 10 pound cabbage rolls, goulash, Chicken peprikash, and of course perogies.

man, i would never have guessed, what with all of the german and polish immigration to the midwest, that we'd have so many sausage haters in this region.

i guess the culinary fantasticness known as "encased meats" is really just more of a chicago/wisconsin thing. so be it, you guys can continue to miss out on bratwurst, salami, thueringer, chorizo, polish sausage, pepperoni, dogs, knackwurst, italian sausage, etc.

man, i really need to make a trip up to Usinger's in milwaukee :slob:

I view hot dogs like I view nachos. Comfort foods at a party, a ballgame, or a street vendor. I have no beef with them, pun and all, but I'd much prefer some broasted chicken or your Chicago deep dish.

^ but chicago deep dish is comfort food as well. all pizza is comfort food. i fail to see how that makes it bad or inferior in any way, as comfort food is my favorite kind of food. gyros, dogs, polishes, pizza, beefs, you just can't eat any better than that, even at the finest 5 star french restaurant.

in any event, you're kinda changing your tune a bit as before you said that you didn't "get" hot dogs, which lead me to believe that you didn't care for them.

Pizza is both comfort food and dinner food. One eats pizza for dinner. I don't know anyone that eats hot dogs for dinner unless they go to a ballgame and get stuffed with nachos and hot dogs.

And I never changed my tune about anything. I never "got" coney dogs or the hype of Chicago (or New York) hot dogs in general but I'll eat a hot dog but I'm not going to prefer it over, say, a hamburger or A DELICIOUS BUCKET OF GOLDEN BROASTED CHICKEN WITH A SIDE OF MAC N' CHEESE, BISCUIT, and some HOT DAMN SAUCE!!!

well, you know me, and i eat dogs for dinner, so there's one person right there. why just this very week i was hanging at a friend's house and we decided to order out from the local hot dog joint and i got the special - two dogs and fries. unmitigated deliciousness.

How about the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States ;)

At our Sunday morning tennis games, I could tell that Saturday nights were the loneliest of the week for him. After routine greetings, he would almost always ask what my wife, Betty Nan, and I had done the previous evening. I would describe a typical suburban couple’s Saturday night (dinner with friends, neighborhood party, movies, a charity event, etc.). Bill [Rehnquist] would then sometimes tell me about a quasi-official party that sounded glamorous but that he found tedious. More often he would describe a dinner of hot dogs, canned vegetables and ice cream followed by an evening with the TV remote. (For more than a dozen years he prepared most of his own meals, but he always considered cooking a chore, rather than a creative pleasure.)

How about we stop talking about boasted chickens and get to the topic a hand which is the Detroit Coney Island chili dog and most importantly what the basis of this said food is.

IMO the dog itself rules all. Without a proper dog to support all of the goodness on top than really it is a mute point.

I have not been to these said places but I would feel more comfortable and hungry if I knew that the under sausage was properly treated.

I could understand a dog that was not 100% pure beef.

A lot of Detroit dogs come from Kowalski or Dearborn brands, though its not necessarily required. In a lot of places they use natural casing, which if you think about it, you're eating the anus stuffed in the intestine... YUM!;)

im playing. there is probably little difference except we just don't take or make hot dogs seriously. weve got old school sausage shops/makers like pieketowskis and independent butchers are still popular, even in the suburbs. brats and knacks are big here, and theres no problem finding whatever kind of encased delight you desire as well as myriad head cheeses, but its true, encased meats play accessory to the overall pork cut and rib centered meat culture here. East St. Louis proclaimed itself the hog capital of the nation with a giant sign, St. Louis National Stock Yards supposedly processing more hogs than Omaha and Chicago at its peak, but the popularity of the noble swine continues in the region long after the demise of the great hog yards (actually I think the yards closed only in 1997 after a fire). I eat enough pork to make Anthony Bourdain proud, at least until he saw how I prepared it, at which point he would kill me.

Like the northern midwest, we take meat seriously here, just not the same way. Braunschweiger and a few other processed nasty bit spam like products are pretty big here, don't know about Chicago, and of course the brain sandwhich is (somehow) still holding on...St. Louis elevates all the "gross" stuff that everyone else hates...
