Astoria was named after John Jacob Astor, one of the first millionaires in the USA in the early 1800s. It was founded by his fur trading company in 1810, just 4 years after Lewis and Clark wintered a few miles away at the mouth of the Columbia River. Today, it has a population of around 10,000.

^^ haha, exactly what I was thinking of!

In all those downtown pics I kept trying to see if I could recognize places shown in the car chase scene in The Goonies.

Nice pictures, looks like a really scenic town.

Awesome pictures, thanks! I've been fascinated with Astoria ever since the Goonies!

I'm pretty sure this was the "library" where the dad worked:

And of course the jail where the fratelli's broke out:

How fitting that there's a jeep Cherokee parked out front! :D

These bring a smile to my face, thanks again!

I don't think I realized Astoria was the location for Kidergarten Cop, though when I think back to that movie it matches up here. :)

Looks like an interesting city in a very interesting location.

Thanks for the great tour. I visited a couple of years ago and found it to be a fascinating place. The view from the tower is breathtaking.
When I toured the big old house, they were freaking because I had a p&s camera, and the staff stood by me through out the whole house so I wouldn't/couldn't take pictures of the interiors.

I thought I read somewhere that this was the first settlement on the west coast, is that true?

Awesome pictures

I'm not surprised it looks like what I've seen from Eureka/Arcata (which is good).

Awesome pictures

I believe that is true, if you mean US settlement. There were, of course, many Spanish and Russian settlements that pre-dated it.

It looks like a charming place, an almost typical West coast version of an small Eastern coastal town. I live only about 200 mi north and have been close but never there. Thanks for the tour.

Nice shots. I haven't made it out there yet, but it's definitely near the top of my list. I think Astoria gets something like 80+ inches of rain per year.

I'm not surprised it looks like what I've seen from Eureka/Arcata (which is good).

I used to live in both Eureka and Arcata and I feel the same way. Astoria has many similarities to Eureka. Both are on a bay or sheltered waterfront. Both have a large bridge from downtown to a jetty. Both are famous for their Victorian architecture. Both cities have very similar grids and layouts, and both have restored old town waterfront districts. When I am in Astoria I feel as though I'm back in Eureka. Nice set. Thanks!

I love Astoria. The Cannery Hotel is amazing. From your guest room you are close to the shipping channel, and it seems like you can reach out and touch the tankers.

It's forgettable, but Free Willy was filmed there too...
