Interesting buildings in many cases but it's kind of unfortunate that they're kept in such a fugly state.

Awesome tour! I actually recognize a lot of these shots as I used to work in the east end.

And although the houses may look trashy, these neighbourhoods have some of the best/closest neighbours (friendship wise) in the entire city. Everyone always talks about east-end charm! Hell... they'll even rent out their front lawn for $5 if you want to park on it for a Ti-Cat game! Some let u park for free!!

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure these were built to house athletes for the first ever British Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games) held here in Hamilton!

Great thread, though Hamilton isn't "Canada's Pittsburgh" anymore than Pittsburgh is the US's Hamilton.

My impression is that Hamilton is a bit more like Manchester than Birmingham, though. Hamilton is actually geographically south of Birmingham, though.

I think he means the one in Alabama. ;)

Hamilton has pretty typical Ontario-style Victorian architecture, but the 20th century pre-war buildings do look really similar to what exists in Midwestern US cities. Hamilton does resemble Pittsburgh. Toronto is slightly different and other cities in Ontario weren't large enough early enough to have large neighbourhoods with this kind of architecture.

Hamilton has tons of this type of housing. In the photos above I avoided areas I've previously shown on here, like Corktown (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=138983) and Jamesville (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=141853). Here are some other examples:

I grew up in that house on the corner with the awful blue post. Believe it or not but that house had large maple in front and one at the side of the house. There was one next door and they all had lawns in front. We move in the fall of 67 just before they cut everything down and turned it into a freeway. It was a nice neighbourhood back then. The guy behind us was a DJ at CKOC and all of the girls in neighbourhood had a crush on him.

^^ I would have loved to see these neighbourhoods in the 60's!

#28 has looked like that for at least a year, I don't think it's a reno. #53 is at Sherman & Cannon I think.

These are definitely the neighbourhoods that made me fall in love with the city, they are rare in Canada. I could walk these streets all day, in fact I did for these pics and I didn't even make it halfway across the city. These pics cover nearly 200 blocks in Beasely, Landsdale, Gibson, Stipley and Crown Point and I've barely explored the city past Ottawa St.

Thanks all :)

The other thing I was going to mention here is that this area looks extra dirty because there was snow on the ground a couple weeks ago which melted and left a mess. I'm not going to lie to you though, much of this area is normally dirty. The city really doesn't give a damn about it, and a lot of Hamiltonians would just as soon see it all demolished.
