This is asking how large an area your city (city limits) encompasses.

If you live just outside the main city, you can include that separate city's sq mileage as well.

I'll start:

The city I live in is 10 sq mi.

Birmingham, AL city limits is 150 sq. mi

OKC = 622 square miles.

But don't panic, 250 or more of it is completely undeveloped farm and ranch land or forest wilderness. It really screws up population density figures.

I live in Norman which is 190 square miles, with an even higher portion of the city being wilderness.

Not all cities in the metro have huge land areas by the way: Nichols Hills is 2 sq miles & 4,000 people, The Village 2.5 sq miles & 10,000. Bethany 5.2 sq miles and 20,000...

Phoenix: over 600 square miles. but with three times the population of Oklahoma City. About half of this land area is mountain parks, desert preserves and undeveloped land in the far northern reaches of the city.

Scottsdale: about 180 square miles, three times the land area of St. Louis, Mo. Over half of Scottsdale's land area consists of the McDowell Mountains, a large chain of 4,500-foot mountains that runs the length of the northern two-thirds of the city.

Tempe: 40 square miles. Almost the land area of San Francisco, but with one-fourth the population.

Mesa: 140 square miles. The third-largest city in Arizona in population (about half a million).

Prescott (mountain town 90 miles north of Phoenix, where I spent part of the time at -- I'm typing this in Prescott now) has about 50,000 people living in 41 square miles.

Now this is good info...This is why per capita numbers are so screwy...if your city is a small island in the middle of a huge developed area, it really throws those per capita stats off.

Minneapolis is about 54 square miles, and has been completely developed since the 1950s(most of it before that)...as have all of the first ring suburbs. The city hasn't annexed land since the first part of the last century.

Tulsa

183 sq. miles "includes very large city parks and nature preserve, river, lake"

Population 383,000 pop. density 2092 persons per sq, mile

4 "official" skyscrapers

667' One Williams Center
648' Cityplex
516' First Place Tower
513' Mid Continent Tower

Tulsa lost a lot of population, and jobs approx 20,000 during the last oil bust, then the tech and aviation downturn. About 3 years ago it stemmed the tide of loss. Last year and the year before we finally saw gains in population again. And this year will as well. Though the suburbs in Tulsa county, which are still the first ring suburbs, have seen dramatic increases in population during the whole time. Tulsa is basically an island all by itself and cant draw from any nearby large cities for metro stats and people.

Tulsa also gets a raw deal in many demographic/profiles in that its downtown is in the "Upper right hand corner" of the city and county. Downtown is not anywhere near the middle. All the growth is to the south and east. So if you do population, "number of people living within 5, 10 miles of downtown, as concentric circles spreading out from downtown, you add areas, many with zipcodes right next to downtown to the NW that have absolutely 0 zilch, population. Less than a mile to the NW you are in trees, hills, pasture. Yet totally the opposite to the SE you have high density.

Its amazing how tricky stats and comparisons of cities can be lol.

In an other way Paris city limit are really outdated. Actually it represent only the inner city (It is like Manhattan)
It is long time that inner suburbs are truly urban, more urban than most inner cities.

We do this from time to time, but I don't think it makes much sense. As we all know, some cities encompass a large amount of natural and parklands. Some cities have huge airports in their borders. Some cities include a lot of water area.

I mean, 53 square miles of Denvers 154 square miles are airport lands. Even land measurements don't always do a city justice and that needs to be explained if you're going to post the areas.

Was the original question specific to "land" only?

Implicitly, yes.

At least in the U.S., land areas for cities usually exclude large bodies of water under city jurisdiction but not fully contained within the city's perimeter.

I think NYC is actually well over 400 square miles if you include parts of the Atlantic Ocean that are within city limits, but they are not counted in most "city area" calculations. They take out the 100 or so square miles that consists of New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay, the Raritain Bay, etc.

Lakes, rivers and the like that are within city limits would be counted, so the small lakes on Staten Island (for example) are part of the 303 (or whatever) square miles.

Largest City in Area in the United States
Sitka, Alaska Displaced Juneau, Alaska in 2000
By Matt Rosenberg, About.com

While New York City is the most populous city in the United States, Sitka, Alaska is the largest city in area. Sitka includes a whopping 2874 square miles of incorporated area. The city is larger than the state of Delaware! Officially known as the "City and Borough of Sitka," the city consolidated the City of Sitka Borough in 2000 to be the country's largest city.
Sitka displaced Juneau, Alaska as the largest city upon the 2000 incorporation. Juneau is 2717 square miles and was formed through incorporation of the borough and city in 1970.

Sitka is a perfect example of an "overbounded" city, which refers to a city that has boundaries that extend far beyond its developed area (certainly the glaciers and ice fields in the city won't be developed soon.)

Jacksonville, Florida is the largest city in area in the contiguous 48 states at 758 square miles. Jacksonville includes all of Duval County, Florida with the exception of the beach communities (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach) and Baldwin.

We're still behind Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Fort Worth in square mileage though. I think El Paso has just 20 square miles less than Austin.

This is as opposed to a metropolitan area which may include multiple cities all under the jurisdiction of separate city councils.

I've never really understood the term 'city limits'. I mean, I know what it means, but what is the point in it?
I don't understand how there can be a defined ring around a city, and if you're 1 foot inside it you live in the city, and 1 foot outside you don't, even though you could be closer to the city centre itself.

Anyway, enough of my rant.

It is still part of the cities land area, and if that's what part of the city is made up of then that is what the city is partly made up of. Look at how much of Detroit is made up of freeways, r/r, and industrial area. That's typical Detroit.

List of cities by surface area
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of the world's largest cities in terms of their surface area. This list is limited to clear, unambiguously defined, political jurisdictions which (in their own language) identify themselves as cities. This is as opposed to a metropolitan area which may include multiple cities all under the jurisdiction of separate city councils.

But the amount of park space/undeveloped land can greatly skew the numbers, so it is important. Not every city has just a few little parks or rivers, in some cases, the majority of the land in the city's boundaries can be park (which is almost always the case when looking at metro areas).

Like LMich said, some cities have much more green space, including parks and just wild land. Houston is one. It's surrounded by water with lakes, bayous and the channel. East Texas gets up to 60 inches of rain a year. It's also surrounded on all sides by pine forests. Texas' 4 national forests are within a 2 hour drive from Houston. The other thing about Houston that a lot of people forget is that it's huge port city. Houston is no typical residential and office city like others are. All those oil factories require a lot of land on the city's east side. Then you have the port itself which basically runs the entire length of the 55 mile channel to the gulf. I'd say close to a third of the city's land is devoted to industrial purposes on the east and south sides.

Not on the level that Houston does. And this isn't some cheap city boosterism speech either. Like I said, about a third of Houston's land area is for industrial use. The difference between Houston and say, Austin or Dallas is quite noticeable. It's a completely different animal.

Chicago:

- Land Area - 227.2 sq mi (588.3 km²)

This what I had in mind when I proposed this question. A few other people had it correct as well. I just wanted the land area that made up the city limits.

Thanks all for responding.

Houston is a poor example of an outlier, IMO. There is nothing particularly outstanding within its borders that would make it differ from most other cities in terms of its land-usage. Cities like Denver (huge airport) and Miami (huge amounts of water) are more representative of outliers. Houston would be little different than say a Chicago or Detroit in terms of industrial land-usage, and could be compared to other heavily industrialized cities, whereas cities like Denver and Miami are their own outlier class in terms of the land inside their borders.

Well, the point is that you are no longer in the same Municipality, regardless of whether or not it is adjacent to another larger city or part of a larger region of cities. People, especially on forums like these, really underestimate the significance of administrative boundaries on urban planning and the dynamics of a region, in their haste to provide comparisons between cities.

Anyways, after the annexations in 2006, the City of Calgary has increased in size from 745sqkm (288sqmi) to 848sqkm (327sqmi). This is the total jurisdictional boundary after annexation, including a huge swath of empty land around the city for suburban growth (meant to supply the city with 30-years of sprawl).

The City set up a comparison with NYC that breaks down this number.
745.0sqkm Calgary Jurisdictional Boundary (2005)
- 272.0sqkm untouched land held in reserve for future growth
- 075.0sqkm landfills and industrial
- 066.0sqkm water and regional parks
- 006.0sqkm Transportation Utility Corridor
= 325.7sqkm Calgary's true built up area
So the "built up" City of Calgary = 125sqmi. This, of course, is based of 2005 numbers, but it simply the proportions should still be about the same.

I have to disagree. The industrial use in Houston is unmatched along the gulf. Even places like Chicago or Detroit or other heavy industrial cities likely don't have the industrial grit and might of the oil refineries and the ship channel. Also the ship channel isn't just for oil. It's a major port. I've been all along the gulf states and none looked like their ports could match Houston's. It's amazing to go over the Loop 610 bridge crossing the channel and see acres of parking lots of brand new foreign cars that were just unloaded from ships. And that's only one part of it. Anything that is shipped to the US in this region, goes to Houston. Austin recently got 6 commuter trains from Switzerland. They arrived a few months back at Houston's port and were hauled to Austin on freight trains. Just little things like that among everything else.

Certainly Miami is a contender to Houston, but I saw Denver as a light weight compared to it when you're talking about industrial use.

As for airports, Houston has at least 3 of them within the city limits. Bush Intercontinental, Hobby, and Ellington Field. Bush is 16 square miles. In the whole metro there's probably 20 to 30 airports (Check GoogleEarth).

Any proof? I've looked at Houston from the air, and it doesn't seem to me to include anything so much great in terms of industrial complexes from some of the other cities I've mentioned. It definitely doesn't include anything that would place it in the same category like cities such as Denver or Miami which was my point to being with. It's not an outlier.

Actually a lot of Houston's industrial/port development is outside of the actual city limits. Though I do agree that Houston does have a greater proportion of undeveloped land within the city boundaries. For example, significant sections of the city are nothing more than narrow strips of land that run along major interstate and highway routes miles outside of the city center. Also the land around the airport as well as the Lake Houston area makes up a significant portion of the total land area but adds little to the population density.
