Wirral Waters
Peel’s Wirral Waters is an 18 million sq ft regeneration scheme – the biggest of its type anywhere in the UK – and will transform the economic fortunes of Birkenhead and Wallasey, as well as Wirral and the broader Merseyside sub-region.
The scheme will see iconic landmark buildings constructed along the waterfront opposite Liverpool, offering a stunning counterpoint to the city’s world-famous Three Graces. The detailed preparation work and planning is currently underway.
Peel, which owns the Trafford Centre, Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Mersey Docks, plans to create a world class mixed-use waterfront development providing major benefits for the local economy with a massive increase in tourist business and a flood of inward investment to the area.
Birkenhead docks comprises more than 500 acres within which Wirral Waters represents a £4.5 billion investment, creating tens of thousands of jobs during construction (which will span some 30 years), and approximately 27,000 jobs when complete.
Existing port facilities at Twelve Quays and West Float will be enhanced and improved while more than 500 acres of brownfield land will be redeveloped at Bidston Moss and at East Float and Vittoria Dock.
A mixed use quarter at East Float and Vittoria Dock will encompass individually designed tall buildings, some more than 50 storeys high and built to the highest standards. These buildings will contain apartments, offices, bars, restaurants, health centres, and community and cultural facilities. Public spaces will be formed between buildings, each displaying its own individual style and characteristics to suit all tastes. Listed buildings will be refurbished and brought back into use, comparable to that of the old Corn Warehouses which are being worked on at present.
At Bidston Moss, an established retail area will see a high quality retail park constructed and supported by leisure services, making it a retail hotspot. Curvaceous romanesque structures with impressive glass domes will be a predominant feature of Wirral Waters. The existing lake on Bidston Moss will be overlooked by cafes, restaurants, a hotel and a health and fitness centre.
