I was in BA for three weeks in June/July. It was my first time in South America. I've known a few porteños (people from Buenos Aires) and had heard great things about the city so I decided to spend my summer vacation in winter, in Buenos Aires.

I loved it. The city is beautiful and even though it's cliche, the atmosphere is very european and distinctly different from other parts of Latin America I've been to. Here are a few from the trip:

The most European looking city outside of Europe, for sure. How was the weather in winter in Argentina? (I'd imagine fairly brisk being that it's a fair distance from the equator) Excellent pics.

Just cold enough to require a coat and scarf just about every day. It flirted with 0C a lot at night but I've been in colder weather. A few days after we left it snowed for the first time in 80 years so I imagine it got even colder.

these are some awesome pics. I didnt remember SD_Phil was such a good photographer.

Buenos Aires is colder than its lack of snow would make one think.

Some cities in southern Brazil, a few degrees north of Buenos Aires, get more snow than Buenos Aires (Porto Alegre is an example... its gets snow once every 15 years or so.)

Of course, a lot of places on southern brazil compensate the latitude with altitude. Cities above 500 meters get at least one snow every year. At heights like 1500 meters, snow is a certainty every year. But southern Brazil doesnt get much higher than this.

São Paulo is at 800 meters high and is much warmer (actually, SP is not warm, since it RARELY reaches 30C in summer, but it rarely gets below 10C) than Gramado, at the same height, at latitude 30.

Im not an expert in snow, but there is much more to it than ONLY temperature, I would guess.

Anyway, there are several towns in Argentina with a LOT of snow, in the Andes mountains. Argentina has wonderful ski stations and such.

just for info, Buenos Aires is at 34º south. About same latitude as Los Angeles (to the north)

btw, it was -3 in Gramado last saturday. Thin layers of ice formed over cars all over. Also in Curitiba. Porto Alegre got 0º.

some cities at higher altitudes got -22 (windchill) and -6 (official temperature)

the problem is that unlike Argentine cities, southern brazilian cities suffer from "we are a tropical country" thinking, and have little to none vedation at windows and doors, no heating systems, etc. The temperature inside my bedroom was 7 degrees just the other day. Not nice to live the ENTIRE TIME and sleep in these temperatures.

Awesome!

Of all the cities I haven't visited yet, Buenos Aires (together with Moscow) is the one I would like to see the most.

It must have been CATURDAY when you took these photos.

It really felt like all the city's cats were concentrated either at the Recoleta Cemetery or at the Botanical Gardens (where there were easily hundreds!). We didn't really run into stray cats anywhere else (likely due to the dozens of dog walkers).

Beautiful photographs of a city I really, really want to visit. If anyone currently lives in Buenos Aires, I'm sure a lot of us would love to hear about the city.
