I've always liked Gahanna as a name (Columbus suburb). I don't know if it's a "cool" name but I've always thought it sounded nice (and it is a nice suburb).

For Dayton, Piqua, Xenia, Yellow Springs all come to mind.

For Cincinnati, Mariemont, Wyoming, Loveland, and Golf Manor always sounded nice.

Swede
Apr 11, 2007, 8:41 PM
Salem (http://www.salem.se) is kinda cool, but less so than a previous version: Slem (Swedish for slime/mucus). :D
Not a whole suburb, but part of one: Inverness. Industrial district iirc, probably named for the Scottish city.
"Krigslida" can be read two ways. Either correctly: suffering of war. Or incorectly: War-vagina.

Well, with all the damn Amish in Wayne County, Cleveland is the closest thing to civilization, unless you consider anything in Medina County, Lorain County or Akron civilization?

BTW, I forgot Medina, which oddly enough used to be called Mecca.

For Detroit I forgot Romulus.

Giant Eagle? That's only a step above Wal-Mart!

Don't complain, I'd rather be stuck with the Amish than the hicks in Medina County.

Is it just me, or do many US cities have old/streetcar suburbs called bel air or any number of variations(belair, bellaire, bell air, bellair)

why is that?

KevinFromTexas

For Austin:

Central Texas and parts of South Texas have a lot of German and Swedish settlements. So many of the names of the small towns and cities are either German or Swedish in origin.

Buda, (pronounced B-you-da)
Pilot Knob, named after an extinct volcano there, (short), which as the name suggests is a landmark for pilots. Originally Bergstrom Air Force Base was located there, which closed and was turned into Austin's first international airport, Austin-Bergstrom Int'l Airport.
Pflugerville, (pronounced Floogerville)
West Lake Hills
Lago Vista
Sunset Valley
Garfield
Bee Cave
Jollyville
The Hills
New Sweden
Montopolis, (now actually a neighborhood in East Austin).
Dripping Springs
Driftwood
Delhi
Friendship
Frame Switch
Waterloo, (named after Austin, which originally was called Waterloo).
New Corn Hill
Liberty Hill
Spicewood
Sprinkle
Mountain City
Niederwald
Stairtown
Littig
Mustang Ridge
Oatmeal
Round Rock, (actually named after a large round rock in the middle of town in a creek which indians used to cross the creek at high water).

Just outside the metro area:

New Braunfels, (It's closer to San Antonio actually, sort of a mid-suburb of both)
Marble Falls, (the granite in the Texas Capitol was quarried here).
Horseshoe Bay
Sunrise Beach
Fredericksburg
Johnson City, (the birthplace of Lyndon B. Johnson).
Luchenbach
Tivydale
Twin Sisters
Comfort
Waring, (wtf?)
Starzville
Schulenburg
Dubina
High Hill
Flatonia
Praha
Giddings
Manheim
Blue
Temple
Heidenheimer
Cyclone
Zabcikville
Seguin
Geronimo, (named after the indian chief).

In Chicago the suburb of Joliet temporarily changed it's name to Juliet after a neighboring suburb named Romeo was incorporated. They both came to their senses somewhat and Joliet is back, and the other is now Romeoville.

I also think the suburb of Manhatten is hilarious, because it's out in the corn fields!:haha:

Lastly I enjoy the story of South Holland. Apparently a bunch of Dutch settlers were headed to Holland, Michigan but got on the wrong train in NY. Having no money to get to Michigan after arriving in Chicago nearly penniless so they decided to found South Holland instead.

For Phoenix:
Phoenix, of course, the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes.
Apache Junction sounds kind of cool, but it's not
Surprise ... there's nothing here!
Youngtown is full of old people
Goodyear is named after the tire and rubber company.
Tempe ... named from the vale of Tempe in ancient Greece
Carefree is full of NIMBYs.

Further outside the metro we have Miami-Globe, Winkelman, Dudleyville, and Superior. On the other side, Black Canyon City, Strawberry-Pine, Snowflake (named after two guys named Snow and Flake). Tucson has Oracle, Drexel Heights, Marana, and Vail. Why is in there too.
