On the DC/MD side of the Potomac most of the big avenues are named after states, while on the VA side many tend to be named for generals. Then as you get further out from the core of DC, more and more take on the names of the satellite city they lead to (Leesburg Pike, for example).

Those notwithstanding… Constitution and Independence Avenues in the District are natural.
I'm personally a fan of the royal-named streets in Alexandria - King Street, Prince Street, Duke Street.
There are a lot of streets in VA named for some landmark along them, some of which are kind of cool – Gallows Road, Glebe Road, Seminary Road, Chain Bridge Road…

Most of our streets and avenues are numbered - some of them are haphazardly numbered.

Favourite:

Messier Trail - St. Albert Trail - Groat Road - University Avenue - Whyte Avenue - 82nd Avenue Northwest - Wye Road

It is all one road. And I'm thinking I am missing a name.

For Chicago I'm going with Stoney Island Avenue.

Does the city have a problem with stoners trying to steal the sign for Weed Street?

I know that in my college town, the street sign for Penny Lane got stolen quite frequently.

Major or not, here are a few.

First, all the major streets in downtown Austin that go east/west were originally named after trees that are indigenous to Texas. They were changed back to numbered streets sometime ago, though.

All of the north/south major streets in downtown, with the exception of a few, are named after Texas rivers. These streets appear in downtown from west to east as the actual rivers appear on a Texas map.

These streets are, from west to east:

Blanco Street
Leon Street
San Gabriel Street
Rio Grande Street
Nueces Street
San Antonio Street
Guadalupe Street
Lavaca Street
Colorado Street
Brazos Street
San Jacinto Boulevard
Trinity Street
Neches Street
Red River Street
Sabine Street
San Marcos Street
Medina Street
Comal Street
Concho Street
Pedernales Street
San Saba Street
Llano Street

There's an area of Guadalupe Street that is commonly called "The Drag". This is the retail and residential strip just west of the UT Campus popular for UT students. The area is one of the most dense and bustling areas of the city.

Others...

Congress Avenue, (which leads right up to the Capitol). It runs from South Austin into downtown and to a few blocks north of the Capitol, then turns into University Avenue and then terminates at the University of Texas Tower.

Lamar Boulevard, named after Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar who was the 3rd president of the Republic of Texas. Lamar Boulevard is the longest street in Austin, (15 miles long, as the crow flies), (not counting I-35 and Mopac Expressway).

Emerald Forrest Drive
The High Road
Trail of Madrones
Capital of Texas Highway, (also known as Loop 360).

Montopolis Drive (although the Montopolis neighborhood is VERY run down)
Speedway
Halfpenny Lane

Minneapolis is full of numbers for streets and avenues and the other avenues are primarily historic figures (i.e. Emerson Ave, Newton Ave, etc.)

I guess our most well-known would be Nicollet which is Nicollet Mall downtown and then turns into Nicollet Ave through south Mpls and out into the southern 'burbs.

In Apple Valley, a southern suburb of the Twin Cities, a couple major roads are:

Johnny Cake Ridge Road
Yankee Doodle Road

Those always give me a smile. :)

the hyphen roads, which tell you where they came from and where they're going: Perrin-Beitel, Lockhill-Selma, Jackson-Keller, Gibbs-Sprawl, Jones-Maltsberger, Binz-Engleman, etc.

But I've always liked the Leon Valley neighborhood street names:
Desilu Dr, Ben Hur Dr., Ponderosa Dr., Ben Casey, Charlie Chan, and my personal favorite, Gomer Pyle.

the best story for a street name in winnipeg is Valour Road.

Valour Road is a street in the West End of Winnipeg. It was formerly called Pine Street, but was renamed in 1925 to Valour Road in recognition of the courage of three young men who all lived on the 700 block of the street and served in the First World War.

All three men were awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest recognition for valour that can be awarded to members of the armed forces of Commonwealth countries. A total of 1,356 Victoria Crosses have been awarded since 1856.

A major arterial a few blocks from home - Avenue Road. Other major streets I like are the British ones like Kipling, Victoria Park, Islington, Martin Grove & Bathurst. I believe Avenue Rd got its name from "The Avenue" which was the road from downtown (actually Queens Park) to Upper Canada College (an upper class boy's school) running north from Bloor St. It was once tree-lined so people could look down the vista to the Ontario Gov. parliament buildings from the college and down to Lake Ontario from their carriages.

Raleigh, NC:

Falls of the Neuse Road (Yes, that's the full name of the road, and you say the whole thing)
Six Forks Road
Duraleigh Road (Pronounced DURA-LEE Road), took me a awhile to figure out that it wasn't DUR-RALEIGH road

To add to Charlotte's list:

There is also a Mallard Creek Church Road that intersects Mallard Creek Road, and if that isn't enough to confuse you, Mallard Creek Church Road turns into Prosperity Church Road at that same intersection, lol. :haha:

Wall Street
Bleeker Street
Avenue of the Americas
Fifth Avenue
Madison Avenue
Park Avenue
Broadway
Flatbush
Arthur Ave
Central Park West
42nd Street

Los Angeles is a very close second

Atlantic City may very well have both of them beat, depending on popular Monopoly is nowadays.

I've seen a lot of places, and nothing beats the road network names in Colorado Springs, CO. Outside of the downtown core there's no grid to speak of, and many neighborhoods, some large, have different themes. A huge chunk of the city by Carefree Circle and Academy have the theme of . . . pleasantness. Serenity, Serendipity, Nonchalant, Joyful, Calm, Wandering . . . are some of the many names, and not all of the area is residential. Next to this neighborhood the streets have a playground theme, such as Seesaw and Slide and Swing. There's another neighborhood up by Dublin and Union that have the theme of musical instruments. A huge neighborhood on Garden of the Gods has a medieval theme, with names like Amsterdam, Darby, and Buckingham. A small neighborhood by Austin Bluffs and Academy are gem names.

The major arterial situation in the Springs is sometimes interesting, sometimes absolutely idiotic.

• Carefree Circle South and Carefree Circle North are both seperate major arterials, which don't really even form a circle.

• Fountain Blvd. in southtown. Two major arterials down it's Fontaine Blvd., probably one of the worst examples of a failure on the part of urban county government in the state. Out-of-towners are usually confused.

• Briargate Blvd. with the next major arterial up Briargate Pkry. Until a few years ago city street signs didn't differentiate between the parkway and the boularvard; both said simply "Briargate." This has been corrected.

• Fillmore turns into Fontmore for like 8 blocks before becoming Fontanero, then abruptly ending.

• 21st Street in westtown, which going south becomes Cresta Road, which shortly becomes Mesa Avenue, then Park Avenue for a block, then El Pomar Road, then Penrose Blvd, then finally Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Road. (all one major road) Good luck finding the zoo if you're not familar.

• Some of these are medium-sized, but all in the Broadmoor area are Cheyenne Road, Cheyenne Blvd., Cheyenne Mountain Blvd., Cheyenne Meadows Blvd., Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Road, and Cheyenne Street. Seriously, it's just stupid.

• Some random streets that come to mind (some not major arterials) are High Tech, Dynamic, Technology, Aeroplaza, Space Village, Portal, Jet Wing, Aerotech, etc.

• Hancock Expswy (huge road), which starts, then stops, then starts, then stops again, then branches off into two seperate Hancock Exprswys, one to Powers and one to Main Street in Widefield (I think this is temporary).

• Recently Drennan (The Road to the Airport) was divided in half and the eastern half was renamed Milton E. Proby Parkway. Resulted in someone getting lost going to the airport for me recently.

• Maizeland

• Stetson Hills

• Marksheffel

• B Street. The B doesn't mean anything!

• Interquest, the name for a short stretch of Highway 83 that goes through a non-existant business park. Should be renamed New Life Road.

• Roller Coaster Road (hey, this one's actually pretty cool)

Anything I'm missing? I doubt your (metropolitan) city can compete with this sillyness.

I like the street name SPADINA AVE here in Toronto.

I think it is one of the more unique names around. SPADINA is a native Canadian word meaning "view to the lake".

So thats one of my favourite street names. And not many other cities have a SPADINA AVE :)

Matt Groening grew up in Portland...thus...

Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard - "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening says it's a coincidence, but Sideshow Bob Terwilliger, Krusty the Clown's murderous and felonious former sidekick and evil nemesis of the Simpson son, Bart, carries the name of the Southwest Portland parkway.

Northwest Quimby Street - Inspired the name of Diamond Joe Quimby, Springfield's corrupt, philandering mayor.

Northwest Flanders Street - Inspired the name of Ned Flanders, the Simpsons' annoying next-door neighbor.

Northwest Kearney Street - Source of name of Kearney, one of the schoolyard bullies who torments Bart.

North Van Houten Avenue - Milhouse Van Houten, Bart's best friend and foil, has the same name as this North Portland street. Again, Groening says it's a coincidence.

Montgomery Park - Used to name Montgomery Burns, the evil owner of the Springfield Nuclear Plant.

Avenida Cesar Chavez-- Name for 23rd Street on KCMO's predominately hispanic west side

Southwest Trafficway -- Or __________ Trafficway, for that matter. Metro KC is the only place I've seen roads called Trafficways

Blue Ridge Cut-off -- One of the most retarded names for a street in existence; runs within a couple miles of Blue Ridge Blvd.

West Pennway -- Not sure where this one comes from, either. Might have to do with proximity to Penn Valley Park

Woodswether Road

Hickman Mills Drive -- Named for Hickman's Mill in what is now south KCMO

Red Bridge Road -- More than likely named for an actual red ridge crossing the Blue River near this road.

Blue River Road

Little Blue Parkway -- Recently renamed, it runs near the Little Blue River

State Line Road -- Running 12 miles along the Kansas-Missouri border separating the two states

Tiffany Springs Road/Tiffany Springs Parkway -- IDK, I just like these two.

Executive Hills Boulevard -- No longer in existence; now signed as Ambassador Drive

Platte Purchase Drive -- New name for street running along and near the Clay-Platte county boundary (which forms boundary for actual Platte Purchase of 1836) in KC's Northland

Running Horse Road -- Runs through exurban fringe of Platte City

Pleasant Valley Road

Woods Chapel Road

Adam's Dairy Parkway

Foxwood Drive -- MO Route 58 within suburban Raymore

Kansas side...

Parallel Parkway -- What does this run parallel to, other than every major east-west street in KCK?

Turner Diagonal -- Thoroughfare running diagonally from Turner area of KCK

Rainbow Boulevard

Quindaro Boulevard -- Runs through neighborhood of same name

Shawnee Mission Parkway -- Likely named for old Shawnee Indian mission in the area this road runs through. Or for the towns of Shawnee and Mission, both of which this road bisects.

Santa Fe Street -- The name for 135th Street in Olathe, KS

Black Bob Road -- The name for Lackman Road in Olathe, KS

Mur-Len Road -- Possibly more retarded than Blue Ridge Cut-off; The name for Renner Road in Olathe, KS

Plus streets named for many of Kansas City's suburbs:

Independence Avenue
Lee's Summit Road
Grandview Road
Raytown Road
Liberty Drive
RiverPark Drive (Between Riverside & Parkville, MO)
Shawnee Drive
Mission Road
Overland Parkway (US-69 Freeway in Overland Park, KS)
Leavenworth Road

n the Cincinnati area, many streets are named after the two towns that are located at either end where the road terminates.....

-Cincinnati Dayton Rd.
-Princeton Glendale Rd.
-Glendale Milford Rd.
-Hamilton Cleves Rd.
-Cleves Warsaw Pike.
-Hamilton Mason Rd.
-Mason Montgomery Rd.

Yes we have that in Dayton, too.

The best of those is Alex-Bell Road. When I moved here I thought it was named for Alexander Graham Bell, but it turns out to be a contraction of Alexanderville-Bellbrook Road, which everyone has shortned to Alex-Bell (I think that is the official name now, too....& the the town on one end, Alexandersville, has disappeared, being washed away by postwar commercial strip developement and road widenings)

Other Dayton names that I like, but are not necessairly cool....

Watervliet Avenue (New York Shakers)

Far Hills (picturesque)

Rip Rap Road (rhymee)

Dogleg Road

Stop Eight Road (inturban transit memorys, the 8th stop out from downtown )

Colonel Glenn Highway (not to be confused with John Glenn Avenue...the astronaut turned politician has two roads named for him here)

some from the Miami area:

Biscayne Boulevard (the name comes from the Bay of Biscay off of France & Spain)
Brickell Avenue ( named for the Brickell family)
Ocean Drive ( Miami Beach of course)
Espanola Way
Old Cutler Road
Coral Way
LeJuene Road
Okeechobee Road
Venetian Causeway
Calle Ocho ( 8th street in Spanish in Little Havana)

I thought Richenbacher Causeway was a cool one, too

Not from here, but my family is:

Neenah, WI

Olde School Rd.

The cops literally just sit there and wait for kids to try and steal that sign... Oh the madness...
Oh yeah then there is my hometown:

Cedarburg, WI

Random Lake Rd.

Wasaukee Rd. (runs along the border between Washington and Ozaukee Counties, hence, Wasaukee...)

Shady Lane
^
Its made cool not so much because of the name, but because it is really twisty and fun to drive on...

There is also:

Kaukauna WI:
Fire Street 1 (2-17 also exist)

They are supposed to be called Fire Roads 1-17, but apparently it was cheeper just to put fire on the sign, so now they are fire street 1-17.

I know Chemist hit on it on the first page, but Calgary doesn't have many interesting names, just the bland numbered streets, native names (just about all main arteries with the exception of Memorial Drive it seems) or streets named after other cities (one area in the NW has a street named after a number of towns and cities in Canada, such as Halifax, Victoria and the more local Cochrane, Banff, Canmore and Morley).

Then theres also at least TWO areas that have a number of streets that are named after trees... and not different trees either. You have Spruce Drive, and Spruce Way... Cedar Drive and Cedar Way... and they aren't exactly near each other either.

For Cochrane (where I actually live) we have a few more interesting ones:

RancheHouse Road - home of only the 'RancheHouse', which is our city hall that also happens to city in the bottom of a valley that requires a 2km trip outside of the main city to reach
The intersection of Carlson Tr and Carlson Tr (the a T intersection with all 3 sides being Carlson Tr)
George Fox Trail (after the country singer)
Toki Road (Pronouced Toke-E)
Trails End Rd

I think there is one in St. Paul.

Couch St.- pronounced Cooch (mistakenly during the early 1900's, but just caught on). It is just funny how many times I take visitors through Portland and they all stop in their tracks when I take them out to dine on Couch street.

Buffalo has a cluster of streets named after fruit trees. The neighborhood is called the Fruit Belt. You won't find any fruits there however.

Nah, the fruits are found a few blocks to the west
