I have noticed that some people in BC can be very arrogant. They think that BC is perfect and that nowhere else in the country could possibly have any kind of advantage over it. It is a very provincial attitude.

The arrogance is also puzzling because people in BC mostly brag about natural characteristics of their province that they had no hand in creating.

BC is blessed with a lot of natural beauty, but I honestly don't think people need
their government making up such an arrogant slogan to make them "feel good". Don't you cringe when you see that sign? I did.

I don't think BC is the most beautiful province in Canada either... It's still very good looking, but it's all about big mountains and sea you know. That would be very arrogant to ignore the wonders of the Atlantic provinces, the Appalachian moutains (even if they're smaller, who cares, really?), the coast, the historic jewels and also the diversity in the landscapes. If big mountains is the only point for being the most beautiful place on earth, then the Alps, the Himalaya and the Andes would win the contest, cause the Rockies aren't that big compared to some other ones. Canada is great, but I'm not sure the most beautiful place of earth is over here. Some places are just amazing in Europe... They have the mountains + everything else... sea, history, beautiful villages... Europe is cool.

I live in BC, and I agree that calling it "The Best Place in the World" is a bit arrogant, and is not a good choice for a slogan as it would likely get this kind of reaction. I don't know what they were thinking when they came up with that, but slogans should not be taken too seriously. When I constantly get asked for money by down and out homeless people, I don't think I am living in the best place in the world.

I like the BC coat of arms much more than the ugly new logo which has nothing to do with anything—no provincial tree, bird, flower, &c.

Government logos should be permanent and static—whipping out a new picture every time the govt. changes just seems partisan.

:jester:

This newer logo is not a replacement for the coat of arms, but it provides a modern image for the government to use. Believe me, the new logo says a lot to some people.

The slogan "the best place on earth" is akin to a father telling his family that they are the best family in the world, even it they literally aren't. It's a moral booster.

I love the old BC coat of arms, and BC has the nicest provincial flag ( I still have my grandfather's silver letter wax sealer with the native holding the crest of BC). I understand about the moral boosting, but it just crosses a fine line between boosting and boasting. Something like "Our place on Earth" might have implied it is the best, without actually saying so... but every province does something similar. I love the current Ontario ads on tv because of the song, but it is basically the same type of boosterism and morale raiser:

_1V5uOubr-4[/QUOTE]

It is similar, but a teensy bit more modest. Just a scintilla. I think it is just the use of the word "BEST" that is a bit much.
The sentiment is completely allowed! ;)

Personally I think a little ego-bruising is healthy for us British Columbians, especially for a number of the ones who posted earlier in this thread, though I'm sure they were all joking around (I hope). Obviously we think it is beautiful here, as I'm sure many other people think as well, but of course there are many other great places across the country and around the world as well and therefore no place on earth could really accurately claim to be the "best" since everybody has different ideas of what's beautiful. Speaking of other beautiful areas of Canada, I thought the area around the Laurentians in Quebec was amazing when I was there years ago one summer. I wish I could remember the names of the towns I saw around there. I think I was like 14 at the time but I liked that area. Niagara on the Lake was a beautiful town as well when I was there the same summer.

To many, BC may not be the best place on earth, but it is extremely far from being the worst place. Quite frankly, if the real estate prices in Vancouver were not so high, I would consider it among my choices for 'best place'.
