View Full Version : Portland's "Hood" - Huge thread!

As part of a series of community development courses I'm taking, I will being doing a project with Sabin CDC, which creates affordable housing and job/skill training and youth development in North/Northeast Portland, the area of Portland that comes closest to being a ghetto. Even so, it's not all that bad. The neighborhoods in this area have great pre-war housing stock, and are very diverse. As far as I know, the area is mostly populated by the historic African-American community, working class whites, growing Hispanic, Southeast Asian, and East African population, as well as educated, young adults. Parts of North/Northeast Portland have been gentrifying in the last decade, especially the Alberta street corridor that you will see in this thread. With access to PDC funds, many new small businesses have sprung up in the neighborhood, many of which cater to a new, younger, well, yuppy clientele. It's a very interesting case study, and probably the only chance we'll get to see it in this transition phase unless the diversity is somehow maintained.

We start downtown

Great pics. I always forget how low-density Portland is outside of its downtown.

Looks like my kind of town. Its good to see a real working class hood, pacific nw style.

It's medium density. The area around Lloyd Centre has lots of condos, and other areas near downtown (south and west) have lots of multifamily.

NE Portland, when I was a student at Reed College in the 80s, was no-go almost end to end- even the now-trendy area near Lloyd was rough. It is amazing, miraculous, to me to see Alberta and MLK and Killingsworth so vibrant like this!

Thanks for a great thread!

From a standpoint of presenting a snapshot of the neighborhood, I can understand this image, as it puts the poor critter in context. You can easily interpret it as an "Only in Portland" moment, or perhaps you could take away a different message.

But the second image is just gratuitous. One out-of-place photo can ruin a perfectly good thread.

furrycanucks, no kidding about the changes that have taken place in such a short time. I wasn't in Portland back in the eighties or nineties, but have heard stories about how bad it was.

We haven't had a Portland photo thread in a long time, so this is great to see. The 'hood' doesn't look too bad, especially compared to other cities. Another reason to like Portland! :) Thanks for posting these.

You can just go to my gallery by right clicking one of the pics, it's in there, but don't want to force anyone to look at a raccoon with its eyeballs popped out, hehe.

I'm new to the site so I figured, with the amount of PDX posters here, everyone would be dead sick of looking at PDX photos. I guess I'll have take some as well.

Great Shots by the way. Although I think the real gritty stuff is now out by 92nd and Foster on the SE side. It's Actually kinda scary out that way. :runaway:

Lsyd,

The precursor to Christmas was a pagan winter solstice holiday, if I remember correctly. Christmas is when it is because of the popular pagan winter festivals at that time of the year. I guess Christians didn't want to feel left out of the fun of the season. lol

Thanks for the tour, fangorangutang. It's very revealing and interesting.

This very much looks like Houston's East End area (well, minus the side street parking). Is this area of Portland heavily Latino?

mrherodotus
Dec 14, 2006, 3:52 PM
Very good to see some of the older side of Portland. That area reminds me of what you might see in the older sections of some Southern and Midwestern cities.

Dec 15, 2006, 3:28 AM
Great Hizzy, to answer the question you posed, the area in the pictures is not heavily Latino, though there is definitely a presence. This part of N/NE Portland is probably the most racially-mixed part of Oregon.

Love seeing the pictures, thanks for posting them. Would love to see some of Mississippi or Vancouver/Williams some other time
