View Full Version : Saskatchewan is so flat and boring

At least, that's what most people think..

Skyscrapercity has a saskatchewan photos thread, I figured this forum needed one too:tup:

Most people only know Saskatchewan from passing through it on the trans-canada highway, which goes through the flattest areas of the province (mostly ancient glacial lake beds, which were left flat as the lakes deposited thick layers of clay). Most don't even know that Saskatchewan has more forests than wheat fields, and over 100,000 lakes.

What people don't see are the many amazing beautiful areas in Saskatchewan that can only be found if you venture off the highway.

I believe Saskatchewan is a land full of undisturbed wild beauty. People don't give it enough credit.

These pics are a mix of ones I found on the internet, and a few that I took. Enjoy!

It is sad that people's impressions of Saskatchewan are almost exclusively formed on the basis of the view from the Trans Canada highway. That province has some truly spectacular and beautiful natural scenery. It is Canada's best kept secret. One of my favourite places in Canada is Prince Albert Park, which I am pretty sure are in a number of these pictures.

I gotta say that even the 'flat' prairie is very beautiful in it's own way, especially at certain times of the year, or even the day. Late summer when the canola fields are yellow, or in the fall during harvest is spectacular. Sunrise and sunset is also very nice with the wide open horizons, and a watching a thunderstorm in the distance while you are driving at 3 AM is spectacular.

That said, it can get a little boring when you drive the same stretch of highway over and over for hours on end.

It's funny, my wife's family lives in Regina. When we visit them, we get a little antsy after a few days for lack scenery (the landscape is so flat). When her sister visits us in Calgary, she starts to get antsy after a few days as she feels hemmed in, almost claustrophobic from the trees and hills surrounding her.

Flat in itself is not uninteresting. I'll add watching storms roll across the prairie:

Simply beautiful photos.

I agree with those who appreciate the flat. It allows for a glorious view of the sky. I don't think there is anywhere else that you can get such lively, wide open skies. I particularly enjoy the summer sunrise, or watching a downpour from miles away.

Maybe one day if I'm rich I'll bring some hills to Regina. ;)

^ I believe that is the Nipekamew Sand Cliffs...

The "Egypt" sand dune is the Great Sand Hills...

and the "Australia" pic is the Big Muddy in southern/central Sask.

I agree the flat prairies alone are fantastic - and the subject of a few of my paintings. But to think that's all there is in such a vast space, well, those pics prove otherwise.

Sask and MB - and Alberta outside of the Rockies for that matter - are extremely underrated.

Wonderful photos though, seems to have the best of what can be found throughout the country, especially Northern Ontario and western Alberta (foothills of the Rockies).

@jabroni - What a lot of even MBers probably don't know is how much better the lakes look up North...even lake Winnipeg - extremely clear...amazingly beautiful. I've only made it up to Thompson and Flin Flon - but good enough to realize how much you miss just staying in the south.

There are dunes in SW MB as well ( though not as impressive) - the Spirit Sands.

Does anyone know when they are finally going to twin that stretch of Hwy. 11 between Saskatoon and Regina, around Chamberalin? That little two lane stretch is soooooooo annoying. I have almost been in 2 accidents driving in that area because so many people treat it as a four lane highway :hell:

Not intentionally trying to be an ass, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, is all I'm saying. To say one is "not as impressive" as another is a matter of opinion, and that is fair enough. We all have opinions on the matter; You have yours and I have mine, is all.

That stretch lasts for about 2 minutes? I drive that highway on a consistent basis (more often than I'd like) and I've never had a problem with it (knock on wood.) If they twinned that stretch, I'd see it as a waste of money.

Still, i had no idea. I'd love to trade the city for that right now.

Not really cheating at all. More so, it's about eliminating the perceptions that people have about Saskatchewan.

If you venture off the trans Canada highway you are going to find some pretty amazing places. Heck, get off the #1 highway for 20 minutes in the Regina area and you'll find yourself in the gorgeous Qu'Appelle Valley.

Unfortunately many people's opinion of Saskatchewan is framed by a combination of Corner Gas, prairie jokes and the Trans-Canada Highway, which takes in some of the least interesting parts of the province.

Ontario is flatter... Except the Superior highlands, of course. "picturesque grandeur" and "Gibraltar of the Canadian West" and all that jazz.

BTW -- when driving through the region, to pass time, I count cell towers, telephone poles, and meese. :) (Or you can go through the US. You'll get to see Chicago! Isn't that better than Thunder Bay?)

I am from BC and my awareness of Saskatchewan definitely falls into the "somewhat" category, as in almost none. In fact, i couldn't believe many of these pictures were taken there. My only experience there was the south and it looked nothing like most of these pictures.

Yeah, I remember driving from Sault Ste. Marie to Cambridge and it wasn't particularly great, but it's better than Cambridge to Windsor. Talk about flat and boring. There's some rolling hills around KW, but once you get around Chatham and extreme southwestern Ontario, it gets really flat and agricultural.

I've only been in eastern Canada, so my favourite landscapes are the Gatineau hills (north of Ottawa) and parts of Newfoundland (St. John's and the interior).

I am from BC and my awareness of Saskatchewan definitely falls into the "somewhat" category, as in almost none. In fact, i couldn't believe many of these pictures were taken there. My only experience there was the south and it looked nothing like most of these pictures.

These are phenomenal pictures.
I posted those pictures a long time ago and I didn't take them so I can't say for sure where all of them are from, but quite a few are in the south...The last 3 were for sure, the one of Deer Valley is, as a matter of fact, it's only a few minutes from Regina.) The top four are different the Gem Lakes which are north of Prince Albert. I urge you to check out www.virtualsk.com (that's where I found the Gem Lakes pictures) they have all kinds of great pictures and neat stories.

The problem is that people never leave the highway. The drive through Northern Ontario is boring because the geography is boring, but the geography is only boring because boring geography is easier to build trains and highways on. A lot of the best places to see, geographically speaking, in this country, aren't along highways. Most don't even have roads.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba ain't flat and boring, that's for sure. If I were able to shoot a movie in Saskatchewan using those great places as backdrops, people would be wondering where on Earth was the movie shot. ;)

Also vid, to make you feel better, I went into the back country between Kenora and Dryden a few years back. Definitely not boring. :D

Northwest Ontario including the area around Thunder Bay is fantastic, Ouimet Canyon, The Falls, rolling hills etc. Great skiing, both cross country and downhill. Good enough for the Nordic Games. The drive from Duluth to T.Bay is great. T. Bay area's lack of proximity to large centre's and it's flat economy hurt what would be a phenomenal resort area. Although you get alot of Yankee hunters and fisherman.:)
Lots of rock faces near Kenora, it may be less interesting in the middle between Kenora and T.Bay but with thousands of lakes and endless forest it's still pretty cool..

Yes but all the cool stuff if off the highway and drivers, as we all know, are lazy.

The Sawtooths are beautiful though.

Took a while to find this thread (I even knew the title, but it didn't come up in the search, I had to look for it manually).

I'm posting again in this thread because a) it deserves a second look, and b) it'll be on the front page so I can find it easier when showing it to people.

Manitoba also deserves such a thread, as many Canadians have pre-conceived, negative stereotypes about the province; time to prove them dead wrong!

I think you're right, of all the people I know in Calgary, very few have been to the East Coast and fewer have been to both the east and west.

I haven't been to the East Coast in Canada, but I will definitely get there someday.

Funny. People basing opinions on driving through Saskatchewan along the Trans-Canada... and I've always found the rolling hills ALONG the Trans Canada west of Swift Current to be VERY scenic. Those sand dunes are called the Great Sand Hills, right?

Really every province in Canada could do with some place to disprove their stereotypes. To most Canadians BC = Rockies, AB = foothiles, SASK & MAN = praries, flat, ONT = big city in south and endless forst in north, QUE = hills, st. lawerence, NL = little abandoned towns, barren, MA = fishermen, lobster, ocean.

Some nice pictures though of Saskatchewan in this thread
