So uh.. being one of the two resident-Alaskans on this board, I figured we better keep our street cred up around here... just thought I'd share some of my favorite snapshots of my favorite city.

btw as promised to Ex-Ithacan, I'll do some "walking" around midtown this spring

6th avenue.. pretty quiet

Keep repping your city, mthq. I really enjoy seeing it. It strikes me as a bizzare city every time, though. But, not in a bad way, necessarily.

Hey, do you think you could do a tour of some of the residential hoods, sometime, and the more historic structures of the city?

BTW, what's that under construction? I remember reading something about a new convention center, or performing arts center.

A town that has always intrigued me and considering how isolated and the relativly small population it seems impressive physically as well. I also would love to see some residential neighborhoods.

thanks for the replies guys!

LMich, I'll see what I can do. Though the city is not even 100 years old, there are indeed some neighborhoods and historic buildings worth noting.. thanks I hadn't thought about that! :hmmm:

oh and as for the construction, that is indeed the new convention center which broke ground in early summer.

GR2NY - I can't say the scene is large, but there is indeed a fan base. Bone Thugs and Harmony are coming up here in January.

Awesome. It looks like Anchorage has several talls around town.

Was that game warden fishing on the job???

mthq
Dec 3, 2006, 8:11 AM
thanks all!

for that guy fishing on the job... i guess his boss how has photograph evidence eh? jk..

CanadianCentaur - actually it's been really bad up here in the last month. Windchills of -30F and daytime temps of 0 degrees have made November feel more like February... yet even our Februarys aren't that bad.

also we got our first permanent snowfall in October this time around... I think that was the first time in 5 or 7 years.

Ex-ithacan - blue monster?... are you seeing things again?

It was even chillier than that here in Edmonton last week. Highs of -21 to -24C (-6 to -11F) and windchills of -40C/F!

I love Anchorage, I have been quite fortunate to spend three summers for work in that part of Alaska. This past summer, my uncle was working for Veco off of Gambell. We both were up in North working with BP, what a mess. Anyhow, it was a blast to be back in Alaska.

It had been two years since I was up in Anchorage last, boy they have really done a nice job on the Airport and Diamond BLVD has really grown up.

It is too bad they have a city ordinace limiting buildings to 21 stories, I think Anchorage would look nice with some high rise condos and a few additional office towers.

The best pizza I ever had was at the Moose's Tooth and the place was so packed they had to expand, during the expansion they had a tent set up for customers.

nergie - glad you loved it! Right now we have 2 highrise buildings waiting to start construction next spring in midtown, and in downtown a developer wants to build three 15 story towers across from the McKay building (the gray tower next to the Sheraton). Hope ya can make it back north sometime to see how much we've changed :)

Ex-Ithacan - damn I must be blind! Well I always thought it looked like a cheap immitation of the Press Your Luck whammy

Centaur - wow.. well I'm sure my brother in Fairbanks feels your pain :D whats the average for this time of year there?

Nice to see some pics of Anchorage. I was born in Soldotna, and spent my summers all through my childhood/teen years in AK. But it's been 8 years since I've been up there now. Summers in souther Alaska are gorgeous.
