Is there a statistic about the first 50 cities in the world for number of visitor?
I know that in 2005 in New York City there have been 42.6 million of tourists ( 7.3m foreigners ), in London 27 million (13m foreigners), in Paris 26 million ( 16m foreigners) and in Rome 16 million ( about 6 foreigners ).

for Toronto I've read both 18 million and 10 million figures. no idea which is the correct one, but it would probably be 10. (although with business trips it certainly could be 18)

I thought Paris was higher too. I thought I had read a 30-something figure somewhere or another..?

In 2005 42.6 million (6.8 million international and 35.8 million domestic) tourists visited NYC. That 7.3 million figure is this year's forecast. By the by in 2003 only 4.8 million international tourists visited NYC down from an all time high of 6.8 million in 2000, so we have seen a rebound of 2.5 million in 3 years. If everything goes well NYC shall welcome 10 million visitors from abroad by the the middle of the next decade(assuming and taking into account that there will be an another minor global recession somewhere in between).

Tourist numbers are complicated, first of all they include business travelers which are directly linked to the number of corporations, businesses and those are to a point liked to city size, family/friends visits which are again linked to city size, visitors from nearby cities which are directly linked to the sorounding population and importance of the city as a regional center, then you have actual domestic tourists which go to to the city to actualy see the city and last of all international tourist who go see the city for the city but end up traveling from abroad to do so.

A city the size of New York should be no suprise that its up there in numbers but when you actualy look at the numbers for all different types of visitors and the size of the city and compare it to other cities then the rankings change alot and New York, although high would fall below many other cities such as Florence, Prague, Paris, London, Las Vegas, etc.

Of the 23 million visitor arrivals in Hong Kong in 2005, roughly half were from mainland China, which is fueling a surge in tourist arrivals due to relaxing visa requirements for certain areas.

Detroit, 2000, has measured 15.5 to 17.6 million tourist a year, which is actually pretty impressive given the horrible image of the city for a huge chunk of nationals. For the 2004 number (15.5%) 68% were pleasure trips, 16% other, 10% business trips, and 6% were convention trips.

Six or seven years ago Toronto was around 22 million visitors a year but the number took quite a beating with the economic downtown, 9/11, and SARS. The numbers are rising again, but they're still below the peak. Downtown Toronto has around 20,000 hotel rooms.

I wonder how these cities calculate their figures.....I know Miami can measure overnight guests by hotel bookings but they don't include the millions of cruise passengers that pass through the city for a day and then go on to a cruise or how many others stay with relatives or rent private condos also....11.3 million seems rather low for the city.

Greater Miami and the beaches. I'm pretty sure this doesn't include Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach. The numbers are actually for 2005. Here's the press release from the Greater Miami CVB.

Talbert announced today that 2005 overnight visitors to Greater Miami grew 3.1 percent to a record 11.3 million visitors, fueled by a record 6.1 million domestic visitors and stable international markets.
“We’re very pleased that the industry and our marketing efforts are performing so well, that we’ve surpassed pre-911 record visitor numbers for the first time,” Talbert said. “We’re particularly proud that we’ve been very successful in boosting summer business through our Festival Season marketing program, as indicated by a 9 percent growth during the June through August time period over the past three years.”
“We’re also excited about the fact that Greater Miami’s brand has never been stronger, which is why we were able to generate one of the highest average room rates in the country,” said Maria Sastre of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., GMCVB Board Chair. “Miami’s average daily room rate climbed 11.5 percent to $128.35 – making it the fifth highest in the nation for 2005 among Smith Travel Research’s top 25 U.S. markets. Our occupancy (72.6%) also grew 6.5 percent, making it also the fifth highest in the nation. This is the first time we’ve ranked as a top five destination for both, showing that we’ve truly become a year-round

Another indicator that the visitor industry was strong in 2005 was employment. Leisure and hospitality employment in Miami-Dade County grew 4.7 percent to over 102,000 people.

The Detroit number includes the whole of Metro Detroit. I didn't think any would just include the city proper's in their number.

Orlando Convention & Tourism Bureau:
Metro Orlando hosted 47.75 million visitors in 2004, an increase of 6.1% over 2003. Growth was particularly strong among international visitors (12.4%).

These figures are two years old. I've read articles that have the current numbers well over 50 million.

Miami for sure attracts more than 11 million.Anyhow San Antonio is the top toursit destination in Texas and a top tier U.S. destination.

I made a brief search on internet and I seen that my previous numbers about the cities by more visitors are incorrect. In fact New York isn't the number 1 about tourism because 42,6 million of tourists is the total number of overnight tourists ( 22 million ) and day tourists ( about 20 million withuot to sleep ), while Las Vegas has a 43 million of overnight visitors ( tourism+convention ), Orlando about 30 overnight million, London 27 overnight million, Paris 26 overnight million, Los Angeles 25 overnight million.
Are there other world cities by more overnight tourists than these 6?
How many overnight visitors has Chicago?

Oh I geddit...Jeez if London counted daytrippers it would be phenomenal the number - 110 million fly into the capital every year for chrissakes :D...

I think Kyoto gets over 40 million overnight stays (much more than Tokyo)- there arent numbers for China as far as I know of but Shanghai and Beijing would have a huge amount Im sure.

Another important aspect about these numbers is that the 22 million of overnight visitors of New York and the 26 million of overnight visitors of Paris ( and almost surely also the 27 million of London and the 25 million of L.A. ) are ONLY visitors that stay the night in HOTELS, while the 43 overnight visitors of Las Vegas are visitors that stay the night in HOTELS and in MOTELS and the 30 million of overnight visitors of Orlando are visitors that stay the night in HOTELS and in ALL STRUCTURE EXTRAHOTELS ( included the normal apartments ) !!!!!!
