Today I visited Amiens, and my first reaction after getting off the train was "whoa, I wasn't expecting a skyscraper!" My second reaction was "oh god, it's ugly!"

I check this page at least once every week. Always good for a laugh. I have to say that the worst building in Ottawa (by far) is City Centre.....which I can proudly say is nowhere near the CBD or centretown area but is actually about 3 km to the west.

Yeah, those pictures of Boston are pretty scary. I just got back from there. While I find the Boston City Hall a masterpiece of Brutalism, it is in the wrong place. I can only dream about the wonderful, bustling neighborhoods that got torn down to build it and it's massive bland courtyard. The worst part is that it's already quickly becoming useless. The mayor is having talks about tearing up another beautiful section of Boston for a new one. I don't understand why they can't build the new one right on top of the old, useless one.

For Pittsburgh... my vote is for the Allegheny Center Mall... a monstrous mid-20th century enclosed shopping mall that replaced 518 mid-19th century Greek revival structures and eliminated a city neighborhood forever. The mall failed 20 years later... but has made a suprising comeback as an office and housing complex. Its virtually impossible to capture the immensity of this disaster on film... but this detail shot by ColDayMan gives the viewer an example of the type of architectural diarreah this complex consists of. The mid-20th century construction of the Civic Arena took a similar toll... though it is at least an architecturally-significant structure (though woefully outdated today).

Wow, so many things:

There are in fact, many, many horrendous buildings in this thread, e.g. NOLA's Plaza Tower, the Minneapolis complex, and that Kingston, Ontario monstrosity. But on the other hand, a lot of these postings - if that's the worst building in your city, you should count your lucky stars. The Trizac Building in Winnipeg, for instance, is pretty standard looking. Not beautiful or anything, but a far cry from a "shameful monstrosity". Jeez.

Thinking of Chicago, my orignal thought was the Apparel Center, but seeing a lot of others, I thought it's bad, but it's not that bad. Like someone else said, it doesn't hurt to have maybe a couple ugly buildings in the skyline if for nothing else than contrast and character. It's prominent location is a bit more of a problem though. Same thing with the Westin River North - by no means hideous, just a supporting cast member to the better buildings around it.

I've always disliked the SBC Building (Fort Worth).

I completely agree with the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle. The obvious answer is to tear the damn thing down and put a wide highway at street level in its place. I remember years ago when people were debating this subject that many people said that just paving over the area below the Viaduct would be ugly and unappealing. That's incredibly stupid. Think of some of the great avenues of the world, the Champs Ellysees in Paris for example, is just a wide stretch of blacktop but the layout of the buildings and the street creates a spectacular setting. Seattle has the potential for a spectacular avenue along it's waterfront by simply removing that concrete monstrosity and creating a broad avenue that would enhance the waterfront and change the whole look of the city.

There is a similar structure in middle Sao Paulo called Minhocao (big snake) that is quite terrible :yuck: , ugly, but unfortunatly none earth(take)quake will happen in Sao Paulo in centuries to tear down. this one is classic....its a parking garage in east lansing, michigan locally known as the habitrail (like the gerbil building set). its pretty much out of character for the entire state of michigan. it should be in miami if anything..you either love it or hate it....

Hey now, I am a resident of Lincoln and I argue otherwise. I guess living there for three years might have made me a little biased, but there's no way you can say it's any worse than the architecture building:

Thousands of angled marble shingles held to the facade with visible metal brackets make this look terrible. They were originally going to do it in brick, but the donor wanted marble. Weird marble.

As far as them being heinous prisons, they are actually some of the most spacious and livable dorms on campus. Jeffrey Dahmer can attest; he lived in Morrill for a quarter.

^ Lincoln and Morrill Towers, while spacious, are designed in a very strange way. If I remember correctly, there are 4 bedrooms (with 2 people in each bedroom) that each have their own study area, and all 4 bedrooms share the same living room and bathroom. So that sounds all good, but the bedrooms form a ring around the entire building, so they are the only rooms with windows (the study areas, the bathroom and the living rooms are all windowless). It sort of makes for a depressing environment.

Plus, all the windows in the bedrooms, which are quite small, are bolted shut. The rumor (I don't know if it's true) is that there were far too many students committing suicide so they bolted the windows shut. That's probably an urban legend, but the design of the building, plus the fact that the buildings are somewhat isolated and far from the action and real neighborhoods around High Street, makes the legend plausible enough. I think they also use to cram four students in each bedroom (2 bunk beds per room), which would have made for a very cramped 16 students per unit.

I also heard that originally there were plans to build a series of towers along the river that were the exact same design as Lincoln and Morrill, but after those two were built, they were considered such a failure that the plans were scrapped.

If I were at OSU, I'd much prefer the single rooms in Baxter or the new graduate dorms.

EDIT:

Oh, and I'm not quite sure how the new Knowlton School of Architecture will stand the test of time; from some angles I think the exterior looks stunning, and others, well not so much. But I actually prefer the use of marble to brick...the natural variation in the individual marble tiles makes the building looks more organic in my opinion. Using brick would have made the building look far too heavy and dark.

In any case, I can't imagine a city or campus that would rather have a Lincoln or Morrill Tower over Knowlton Hall:

I would say that the majority of the buildings in Brasilia are actually quite nice...they're thoughtfully designed and creatively detailed. The problem is that they're in a "concept city" that was designed with open planning principles....before those principles were recognized as a scourge.

Brasilia the city just flat out doesn't work, but the individual buildings are fookin impressive.

I will throw my two cents in for the city of Spokane..

This 18 floor hotel montrosity would not be so bad with the exception that is was just completed a few months ago. It includes an all concrete 1970s Communist feel, visible air condition vents by each window, and to top it off inside has that ever so unique to frozen Spokane "Safari" theme to it complete with cheetah, zebra and tiger print everywhere.

The Empire State Plaza is horendisly ugly, but at the same time amazingly beautiful. I dont know what it is but I love it

Its like a vision of the future from the 1950's. Just check out how the Project is elevated above the rest of the city, how the freeway's cross under it, and the huge ionic towers.

Amazing.

this thread should have been locked when the buffalo thing was posted...especially when we see what it replaced...unbelievable.

as for winnipeg's entry....it should be noted that it replaced an equally beautiful building (the market building in the foreground).....it is getting a facelift in which the stone will be removed at it will be re-clad in all glass curtain wall...hopefull it is an improvement.

How ever ugly it is, it gets points for just being straight out kick ass awesome.

ok, a little history on this one. without knowing the specifics of this exact building, in the 602sand 70s there were a number of architects who proposed that in the future people would live in giant megastructures that hovered over the earth and were connected by tubes. it's a very sci-fi fantasy that was predicated on the belief that all things would one day be egalitarian and shared and all human traditions would be erased. ive never known any of these monsters to get built but this looks like a small-scale spin-off.
