Even though Oldenburg is just 2 hours away by train I have never been there yet. I also have not heard very much about this city, it kinda flies under the radar.
The city absolutely surprised me though. Not only is Oldenburg beautiful it also has a very vibrant and nice atmosphere.
There are canals going through the city, a beautiful yellow castle, a university with 12.000 students enrolled and the city also has a wonderful modern museum.

The population of Oldenburg is 160.000 and the city of Bremen that has a population of more than half a million is only 45 Kilometers away.

The first impression is not the best. This is the main station and when you leave it to go to the city centre you'll

see this:

After you went through a small street that appaears to be Oldenburgs erotoc mile you'll start to see what the city has to offer though:

Yup, looks like Germany. Great-looking town.

The kids on the stilts thing is nice. It makes the town feel friendly and light-hearted.

What were the canals for? Were they for drainage of swampy land like Amsterdam? Or were they for transportation?

Very nice! Never even heard of this town, though I was born not too far away.

What is the name of the North German brick architectural style seen in the Oldenburg HBF? Many of the office buildings in Hamburg have the same distinctive look.

Very cool, thank you. Is it a tourist town or just a regular place? It seems quite quaint.........

Definitly not a tourist town. It's a place that's seldom talked about or in the news, they also don't have a well known sports team.

Beautiful! I love how there are bicycles everywhere -- good ol' utility bikes with fenders and upright handlebars and lights, the kind that people use for everyday city transportation.

I have no idea. I tried Wikipedia and other sites but they don't offer an explanation.

Btw, here's Oldenburg's location:

Much of northern Germany used to be swamps and marshes that were drained to create dry land. In order to drain the swamps they had to build lots of canals you see in these pics. Hence, the canals. If you look at a map of Germany you'll see tons of them in the northern part of the country.

Great housing options in those pics. It does have a quaintness to it too. The kid on stilts is a hoot. Thanks for the tour of a place I'd never heard of before.
