This is my favourite traffic jam picture. Its basically a major highway with five private vehicle lanes in each direction, dedicated bus lanes on the side, and a segregated LRT line at the middle. And the only thing moving fast is the LRT!!! :D

@ David D, that particular pic is in Makati City, a suburb of Manila in the Philippines. The freeway is called EDSA, one of the main thoroughfares of the Metropolis. Other than being a highway, it was also the site of the "People's Power" Revolution that ended the 20 year reign of the dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.

For me, surface street traffic is more interesting. A couple of quick expressway photos. They are all jammed. Chicago has the second worst traffic in the U.S. after Los Angeles.

3-5 lanes on each side + 3 express lanes + 1 CTA line + 1 heavy rail Metra line = Madness

By counting the lanes in that picture, and adding the three extra lanes on the right side that are not in the pic, it looks to be about 19 or 20 lanes at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza.

Stuck in traffic on Interstate 10 and Riggs Rd, 22 miles outside of downtown Phoenix--yes that's a 75 MPH sign, and it was worse on this for miles and miles... on a Saturday afternoon no less.

The white truck is a Border Patrol SUV. I have no idea what they were doing up here.

Arizona's roads are choking under the recent sprawl.

There are 20 westbound lanes at the toll plaza:

http://www.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2005/06/24/mn_fastrak.jpg

... plus five eastbound lanes, so 80 is 25 lanes at that point. But get this: The El Toro Y (5/405 interchange) in Orange County is 26 lanes at one point.

sf_eddo
Apr 24, 2006, 6:04 PM
J Church,

According to this Google Image, it looks 80 East is 6 lanes eastbound, plus 2 or 3 more going towards 880 South = 28 or 29 total
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ll=37.824527,-122.313184&spn=0.001771,0.003659&t=k&om=1

as for the 405/5 interchange in Irvine, check out the picture here:

I cannot tell how many lanes it has but it does look to be about 26.

Incidentally, any idea where that is?

J Church
Apr 24, 2006, 6:37 PM
Ed, you're right--what's going on eastbound at that point is three lanes each headed for 80, 580 and 880. I'd forgotten the split was already underway as you pass the toll plaza. Meaning: Draw a line across the freeway at that point, and you've got 29 lanes. Somebody tell the Orange County Transportation Authority to stop boasting! ;)

How long does it usually take during rush hour to get across the bay bridge?

I've never taken it during rush hour before. But I've waited as long as an hour and a half from the toll plaza to The City (7 miles) on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon, especially when it's sunny or there is some event going on in The City.

But in the dot-com heyday of 1999 or 2000, I took the Bay Bridge from Berkeley to SFO, a trip of around 20 miles, which took 2.5 hours. There might have been an accident on the bridge, though.

the dan ryans not that bad, the first day of construction everyone was making a big deal of it while I sat on the ike (290) for an hour and a half. its gonna have its biggest problem if there's an accident since there aren't any shoulders.

Not since that first day. Now you gotta be on there at like 3 in the AM for the Dan Ryan to not kick your ass. You seen/been on it lately?

The other day I drove across it at 83rd St. It was like 8AM. Traffic was sitting. Literally. About a half-hour later I drove back across it, again at 83rd. I wouldn't doubt that those were the EXACT same cars and trucks (lotsa trucks) that were there my first time over. I found it so very hilarious...

And thing is, I was listening to 100.3 a few minutes after I first went over and the traffic girl there said 25 min from 95th St in. I was like, aw hhhhHEEEEELL naw! Way to send people off. Maybe more like, 25 min for you to move again once you stop. I don't usually even go near the Ryan nowadays during the day or evening if I'm driving somewhere, so that was my first on-site look at the daytime gruesomeness since the construction went full swing. It was strong visual evidence supporting the horror stories I've heard, which have been numerous and similar.

Since the state took away the embedded traffic-trip sensors (have those timing cameras they been promising online fully yet?) and taken the science out of time estimates, it's like some of the radio and TV traffic people are just pulling numbers out of their ass for the Ryan.

But this scene I speak of makes me think of the Married...With Children episode where the Bundys tried to go on a Labor Day road trip but they spent the whole episode sitting in traffic and got into fights and shit, and Peg and Kelly and Bud walked home from the expressway and Al got so pissed he rallied the people to tear the pavement up in rebellion.

If I had a camera, I'd take and post pics for y'all, and y'all would be like, :stunned:  :omg:. Perhaps someone here will eventually (I bet Segun would get a kick outta taking some shots of the scene if he decides to take the Red Line cross town).

But not enough people will smarten up and take the L and Metra for that situation to be alleviated, I don't think. I honestly fear for the safety of a person who crashes or stalls there at the wrong time--and unfortunately I mean pissing off the wrong person/people because of it, moreso than any danger of getting hit.

How long does it usually take during rush hour to get across the bay bridge?
The longest its ever taken me was 3.5-4 hrs back in 1997 during the BART strike. It was just awful-my coworkers who live farther away from The City took up to 6 hrs to drive 50 miles-one of the worst traffic days ever!

Usually a solo driver coming from Oakland can take an hour to 90 minutes during the week-also depending on what time you leave. Usually 45 minutes. A lot less if you carpool.

Sat and Sun evenings are the heaviest traffic days on The Bridge!

Also,
The Jam begins far away from The Bridge itself. 24 can back up to Lafayette, 580 and 880 can back up to East Oakland and 80 can back up to Richmond.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/DetroitNerd/Family2006.jpg

:previous: That was back when they were doing preliminary expressway work and work on the Red Line L. That wasn't the most friendly environment for traffic, either but at least all lanes were open then save for the far right local lane on occasion.

If you go to the same location (approaching 39th St) now, at the same time of day, and try and take a similar pic, you'll not only be in less danger doing so as long as you stay in your car you'll have plenty of time to take all the pictures of the surroundings you want. And enjoy the sweet skyline view.

I know it sounds like I'm overstating things but it's really an unprecedented nightmare that people need to adapt to in order to have any hope of relieving.

Great pic by the way. From the Ryan is my favorite angle to view downtown save for the south lakeshore. And it's a perspective that is rarely seen on this forum.

EDIT 03 May: John Hilkevitch of the Chicago Tribune noted back on Monday that over the course of the last month the inbound, morning-rush Ryan has experienced a significant reduction in traffic, while the outbound, evening-rush Ryan has experienced a less significant but still-noticeable traffic reduction. Unfortunately instead of using transit, drivers are just going the alternate routes, clogging them--tho I heard tonight from WGN that Ashland from Roosevelt to 95th was 30min at about 6PM, which isn't bad. But I can imagine the problem it is at its traffic height, as Stony Island which has a higher capacity has been a no-fun ride during the rushes (as I've witnessed personally). And Lake Shore Drive has seen a 120% increase in traffic as cited by Hilkevitch.

A Chicago forumer with a good camera should check out the alternate routes LOL

Over the last 30 years, the 2 bridges have swaped the distinction every couple of years-only for the last 4 consecutive years-its been The GW with Bay Area traffic getting better due to the dot com crash.

The difference is that the Bay Bridge is far more vital economically to the Bay Area then the GW is to New York-NY has far more viable driving options within close proximity whereas the BB's alternatives add 30 miles or so.

The King's Highway No. 401 (also known as the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway) is a freeway that extends across Southern Ontario, Canada. It is the longest 400-Series Highway in Ontario, the busiest highway in North America and among the busiest in the world. (wikipedia)

The 401 is widely considered to be North America's busiest highway, with an estimated Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of over 425,000 in 2004, between the Weston Road and Highway 400 interchanges in Toronto. This surpasses the Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles, and several Interstate freeways in Houston, Texas. Due to its triple use as the main trade, commuting and recreational corridor in Ontario, 24-hour traffic volumes can exceed the 500,000 level on some days. The just-in-time inventory systems of the highly integrated auto industry in Michigan and Ontario have made the highway the busiest truck route in North America. Highway 401 also includes the continent's busiest multi-structure bridge at Hogg's Hollow in Toronto (four structures for the highway's four roadway beds).

Today the stretch of Highway 401 that passes through the Greater Toronto Area ranges from 6 to 18 lanes, and the stretch between Highway 403 and Brock Road in Pickering is thought to be the world's longest continuous stretch of highway having 10 or more lanes.

Nothing in sync with a traffic jam, but following in the footsteps of similar photos previously posted:

http://downtownmotown.8k.com/pages/sb26.jpg

Detroit's worst interchange is where through-traffic of I-75 (the region's most heavily-traveled) has to pretty much "exit" and make a 90 degree turn to the north with just 2 lanes. Needless to say, there is always backups.
http://downtownmotown.8k.com/pages/sb37.jpg

This part of the Fisher Fwy always backs up too during rush hour. Further back, cargo truck traffic rules the road in order to cross the Ambassador Bridge to Canada. Personal vehicles back up in this spot as they approach the Tunnel to Canada downtown.

Atlanta's downtown connector during rush hour.

And here's a little Atlanta traffic related trivia question (albeit somewhat ancient in origin).

Who knows what the term "tight squeeze" refers to? And get your minds out of the gutter.

No, it doesn't have anything to do with bridges. I'll give it a little longer to see if anyone else can come up with the answer. I will refer back to my comment (albeit a little ancient in origin) to help out.

the bay bridge is horrible i once had to go to the bathroom and i sat on the bridge at least an hour i think at least 50% of the time spent is because the tollbooths they should just tax every1 instead save time.

May 8, 2006, 6:25 AM
^^I thought it had something to do with bridges on the connector too...I've got a pretty smart uncle from Lilburn who mentioned that it was the main route from Atlanta to the north outskirts (Buckhead) around the civil war era, which was named tight squeeze b/c of the rough theives that wouldn't let you through without beating your ass and taking your Shit$$ Thats how he put it.... :haha:

It's a more common sight in Tijuana, Mexico, not so much in LA....it would be suicide.

Traffic Jam is really exasperating but I'd rather deal with traffic jam than with people jam on public transportation... at least in crazy Mexico City

I came across that reference in some Midtown history a while back. It was the area around 10th and Peachtree, say, 100 or more years ago, which was then a ravine where thieves and hooligans hung out. Wagons had to go around the ravine via a small road (which I believe is now Crescent Avenue) to pass, hopefully with their lives and wallets intact.

Just a question about the Bay Bridge - is there any possibility of them replacing the toll plaza with an entirely electronic toll collection system. Seems to me that the traffic backups could at least be moderated by removing the requirement to stop to pay a toll.

In Dublin, Ireland, some of the worst traffic tie ups (in a city that has horrific traffic everyhwere) are caused by the toll plaza on the M50 motorway bridge over the Liffey Valley on the western outskirts of the city. As a result, the Irish government is removing the toll plaza and replacing it with an electronic toll collection system that does not require drivers to stop, which should improve traffic flow greatly.

Here's what I wrote on another thread:

You'd think that people would like to speed through toll plazas and just be charged electronically, but that's not the case, at least in the SF Bay Area. Fastrak has very low user enrollment and according to this article from the Chronicle, around 39% of tech-savvy Bay Area drivers use Fastrak versus cash, while 70% use similar technology in New York and 75% in Illinois.
