Venusfan are you sure there are two 6x-storey buildings instead of one? Are they both near Taikoo Shing?

All I can say is there are two "projects". There may be two 60+ stories buildings in the area, or probably nothing is built eventually.

The first one is the redevelopment program of Somerset House, Cornwall House and the Warwick House, which are all owned by Swire. The 3 buildings occupy a total site area of over 100,000 sf. If the 3 buildings are replaced by a single tower, the GFA is around 1.6 msf., and the tentative height is about 65 stories.

The second one is the redevelopment programe of Aik San and Melbourne industrial buildings. Swire acquires the two buildings in 2002, and originally the proposal redevelopment is 36 stories, 820,000 sf. However, couple days ago Swire announce that the project shall be changed to 67 stories, 1.55 msf., and the plan has granted approval from the Buildings Department, yet no exact timeline has been set.

Might be we need a cylinder like building at the site instead of the current design making a contrast with BOC and CKC.

You see that BOC is full of corners, and CKC is a perfect square.
A cylinder building like Hopewell would probably fit in the skyline.

The developer has said that the Harbour Gateway will be a gift to Hong Kong after she will have returned China for 10 years.

i can hardly imagine a 90 storeys building right at the harbour front....
it will be so wierd without any tall bulding around it, kinda like harbourfront landmark.... it does not fit the skyline at all

In order to cope with the increase demand of the service, the co-operation of the Ocean Terminal has launched its redevelopment program since 1997. New office buildings were built. The Ocean Terminal will be renovated soon and gives a new image to the visitors. The heart of the project is the construction of a 96-storey, 405m height tower, known as the Gateway III.

In 2002, the government rejects the building of the skyscraper. Instead, a giant observation wheel will be built.

"Westlands Road commercial development approved
Swire Properties' building plans for the redevelopment of Aik San and Melbourne industrial buildings at Westlands Road near TaiKoo Place have been approved. The approved plans are for a 69-floor building to be erected on the sites of the industrial buildings with a height of approximately 280 m.
The total site area is 109,900 sq ft, comprising about 54,800 sq ft from the sites of the industrial buildings and 55,100 sq ft of adjoining land. The approved gross floor area of 1.55 million square feet represents a plot ratio of approximately 14.0 on the total site area. The estimated construction cost is approximately HK$3 billion.
Demolition of the existing industrial buildings has commenced and is likely to take one year to complete. A decision on when to proceed with construction will be taken after this and the developer says the proposed development is likely to take four years to complete."

WHO has today removed Hong Kong from its list of areas with recent local transmission of SARS. Twenty days, which is twice the maximum incubation period, have passed since the last case was isolated on 2 June.

When 20 days have passed since removal of the last case from the community at large, the chain of human-to-human transmission is considered broken, thus eliminating the risk of infection for both local residents and travellers.

¡°This is a very significant achievement,¡± said Dr David Heymann, Executive Director of Communicable Diseases at WHO. ¡°Hong Kong, with its dense population and fluid border with China, had one of the hardest outbreaks to control. This success means that the whole world can now feel safer from the SARS threat.¡±

SARS was first carried out of southern China into Hong Kong, and then on to Hanoi, Toronto, and Singapore in late February. Some 16 visitors and guests to the ninth floor of a Hong Kong hotel became infected through contact, in ways that remain mysterious, with a symptomatic medical doctor from Guangdong Province, who stayed in the hotel¡¯s room 911. The index case for Hong Kong¡¯s first outbreak, in the Prince of Wales Hospital, visited an acquaintance staying on the same floor during the critical days in February. Additional clusters were also subsequently linked to the hotel.

SARS had not yet been identified as a dangerous new disease when the outbreak hit Hong Kong¡¯s hospitals. Doctors and nurses, unaware of the need to isolate patients and protect themselves, became the first victims as they struggled to save lives. In a particularly unfortunate incident, the index patient at Prince of Wales, admitted on 4 March, was treated four times daily with a jet nebulizer, which probably aerosolized the virus and greatly increased opportunities for spread.

In late March, Hong Kong suffered a major setback when a large cluster, eventually numbering more than 300, of almost simultaneous new cases was traced to a single building in the Amoy Gardens housing state. That event, which raised the possibility of an environmental source of infection or even airborne spread of the virus, was investigated by teams of local specialists. The outbreak was attributed to an ¡°unlucky¡± convergence of environmental conditions that allowed the contamination of vertically-linked apartments. This conclusion, subsequently confirmed by additional studies, calmed fears that the SARS virus might be airborne.

From the day when the first cluster of cases was recognized, Hong Kong officials have provided open, honest, and abundant information about SARS to both the public and the media. Hong Kong also benefited from the contribution of its outstanding scientists, epidemiologists, and clinicians, who were at the forefront of efforts to track down source cases in the various clusters, identify the causative agent, develop diagnostic tests, and work out treatment protocols.

Faced with the largest outbreak outside mainland China, Hong Kong also pioneered many of the control measures used to successfully contain smaller outbreaks elsewhere. It is gratifying that these measures have now brought Hong Kong to the point of victory over the virus, although continued vigilance remains vital.

On 2 April, WHO advised the public to consider postponing all but essential travel to Hong Kong. That recommendation was removed more than 7 weeks later, on 23 May.

Hong Kong: Tiger Balm Garden has become the latest major residential development approved by the Hong Kong government. Development consists of four 41-storey residential towers atop 11-storey podium and is located at Tai Hang Road, Happy Valley. Developer Cheung Kong Holdings plans to start construction this year.

Other major developments approved by the government in recent months are residential development of 8 towers with 48 floors on Hoi Fan Road, West Kowloon, 14 tower residential development in Pok Fu Lam ranging from 38 to 51 floors and 6 tower residential development again in West Kowloon reclamation area ranging from 51 to 53 floors.
