RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia and Maryland have agreed to establish a commercial space flight center at Wallops Island, Gov. Mark R. Warner's office said Wednesday.

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at the Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore will fold in the current Virginia Space Flight Center on Wallops Island, and will provide a launching site for small to medium-sized satellites and flight experiments for government, academic and commercial interests.

Warner and Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich announced the agreement Wednesday.

The space center will be able to operate largely because of the existence of two orbital launch pads developed and owned by Virginia, according to a news release. The center also has secured a launch-site operator's license from the Federal Aviation Administration and agreements with National Aeronautics and Space Administration to occupy and improve land and facilities on Wallops Island.

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport has a contract with the Air Force for an orbital launch, the governor's office said.

The Virginia Space Flight Center has been operating since 1995.
