Carleton University proposes to re-purpose and expand the existing Life Sciences Building to satisfy a need for an advanced collaborative research centre. The building is to be known as the Advanced Research and Innovation in a Smart Environment (ARISE) building.
The site is located on the south perimeter of the Campus on University Drive. The site is bordered on the south by the Rideau River. On the north the building fronts an internal vehicular and pedestrian driveway with Paterson Hall located on the north side of that driveway. On the river front to the east is located the Herzberg Building and to the west the Loeb Building.
The new Advanced Research and Innovation in Smart Environments (ARISE) building will sit between the Loeb Building to the West, Herzberg Building to the East and Patterson Hall to the North. The site is heavily sloped to the South and has generous views overlooking the Rideau River. The development will consist of a major renovation and major addition to the existing structure. The new building will be two stories when viewed from the North and five stories at the South, plus mechanical penthouse. The East and West sides of the site will be sloped landscaping to mediate between the upper and lower condition. Level 4 will become the new main exterior entrance for the building, and the existing exterior entrance will be maintained at Level 1 on the Rideau River frontage. The existing building currently connects to the Carleton University tunnel system at Level 3 and the new building will maintain and expand that existing connection.
The new ARISE building will contain approximately 5,575 square metres of program space. Level 1 is a limited existing floor area and will be used as an entrance and informal gathering / reception space. Level 2 – Level 5 will contain academic programming that will include Health Technologies, Information and Communication Technologies, Knowledge Integration and Clean Technologies.
