Community residents will have to wait until at least next winter to lace up their skates at the Waterdown Rotary Memorial Park Skating Loop.

A few hiccups have delayed the construction of the 200-metre skating path and 2,200-square-foot facility that will provide storage for the refrigeration system and feature additional amenities for those who frequent the park.

The City of Hamilton had hoped that the ice loop, which will serve as a flat surface in the spring, summer and fall months for rollerblading, cycling and walking, would be ready in time for this season. However, issues with the path’s location at the Hamilton Street North park were identified in the developmental design stage of the project.

According to Marnie Cluckie, the city’s manager of planning and capital works, the ice loop’s location does not meet minimum setback requirements for road allowances. While there is no immediate plan to widen Hamilton Street, it may be considered in the future, based on anticipated development. Therefore, plans to locate the loop parallel to Hamilton Street from the skate bowl to the northeast entrance to the park must be re-examined.

While the delays are a cause for disappointment to many who looked forward to making use of this much-anticipated park feature, there’s a silver lining, said Cluckie.

The city is currently exploring the possibility of relocating a baseball diamond from Memorial Park to Joe Sams Leisure Park. If this takes place, it would free up space at the Hamilton Street North recreational facility and allow consultants to take a more strategic approach to the path’s placement.

“When you are looing at a larger site, you are able to do a more strategic approach to the park at large, whereas before, you were confined by certain constraints,” said Cluckie. “Now, we can look at the whole park and what makes the most sense.”

The Waterdown Rotary Memorial Park Skating Loop is a $2.2-million partnership project between the City of Hamilton and the Rotary Club of Waterdown. The city is paying $1.2 million towards its construction, while a $1-million Rotary donation will fund the remainder of the project.
