I'm not sure what to think of this building. The sides you can see in the pictures are fine but unfortunately the other sides (which I neglected to photograph) are pretty bland and ugly.

I thought the Hotel Europe in gastown was already considered Vancouver's flatiron building.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5d/Hoteleurope32.jpg

At least the Hotel Europe kind of looks like the Flatiron building. This new building just looks really skinny.

From what I could see today, it would appear that the Flatiron is roughly topped out. I think they're just working on the mechanical at the top. You can kind of see it in Vanman's pics.

The south and east elevations are as bad as Sapphire!

Correction: worse than Sapphire. The building looks absolutely hideous coming down Melville...like one of Concord's earliest ugly white spandrel towers - except with an exposed core for extra ugliness. But in typical Vancouver fashion, this thing was approved, looked good from one angle in one rendering, and sold out in a few weeks, so it's all good!

^^One of the worst parts of the melville elevation is that you see both the nice green glass from the pender side, and the shitty white spandrel crap, it looks awful having the two side by side.

It's kind of an interesting steel frame they've put up on the roof, I wonder how it fits in...it doesn't look anything like the rendering of the mechanical.

officedweller
Mar 12, 2008, 9:46 PM
There were a couple of variations - one had a canopy on the roof (I think it may have been opposed by area residents for blocking the view, resulting in a more modest proposal - but following a court case, I think the old design was reinstated)

i'm struggling to understand why the architect chose to have a rounded roof element like that. it throws off the whole geometry of the building.

had the roof been angled similar to the patio decks, it would have looked much sharper.

Flatiron seems to be wrapping up. There are minimal lighting effects on the roof: several white lights shining up toward the top of the building. At ground level at the point where Melville connects with Pender (the front point of the Flatiron property), there is a 4-5 foot tall light "cylinder" which oscillates from colour to colour making a nice rainbow effect.

Sorry for my obvious lack of ability when it comes to judging height! I guess my excuse is that it was flippin' cold and I was hurrying on past to get into the Shoppers Drug Mart. Also, from my place there is a view from high above that light stick, so looking down on it from that height, it is hard to judge. Hey...at least I reported it!

I'm getting tired of the seemingly ubiquitous LED rainbow effect. They should try choosing some complementary colour schemes rather than "let's just have every colour". Something about the lack of selectivity comes across as cheap and poorly designed to me.
