Bethlehem

Bethlehem was founded in 1741, by a small group of Moravians, along the banks of the Monocacy Creek by the Lehigh River. The city was named after the town of Bethlehem in the Middle East. Bethlehem is situated on the border of Northampton and Lehigh counties and is nicknamed "Christmas City, USA".

Bethlehem became a center of heavy industry and trade during the industrial revolution. The Bethlehem Steel Corporation, one of the largest producers of steel in the world, operated from 1904-1995. The city is also home to Lehigh University and Moravian College.

Bethlehem is the second largest of three adjacent cities that comprise an area of Pennsylvania known as the Lehigh Valley. The population of the metropolitan area is over 740,000.
