So how far along is excavation for the Park Avenue West tower?? Or are they at ground level yet?

*I could check the local section, but Portland needs some more love in this section!!*

Also, any further news on that crazy observation tower?

Any views of SoWa development to post from the Ardea Dkealoha??

PAW is a huge-ass hole in the ground, getting ready for the crane, but a year, at least from ground level.

"crazy observation tower" is a vision project at this point, give it a decade

SOWA continues despite the economy, Mirabella and a 6 story job are going up and active.

I like that I coined the term 'crazy observation tower'...haha

I'm glad to hear that Mirabella is moving along...yet another tower for SoWa high on design.

Always thought Portland was a nice city ( though it was a surprisement when I found out their average snow fall), and seems like the downtown is very liveable and active.

Thanks for the link regarding our fair city, neef. I'm originally from the eastern shore of Maryland, and you won't find me going back- just say no to scrapple.

Next building Boom?

Wow looking at the front page of this thread makes me wonder what the next building boom will bring and how far away we are from one. I would love to see a reincarnation of the Oak Tower and the Delano go through and for the restart of the Broadway Tower. If the Moyer properties are any indication we may get the Broadway by about 2020. I hope the next boom comes before then.

To me, Portland is a great example of a city reinventing itself. Have there been any new developments lately? This thread looks a little dead...

Latest news, folks:

Burnside Bridgehead development has been scaled way, way down and is supposed to be complete "by 2014"

New Green Line MAX extension should start construction in July 2011. Includes new cable-stayed bridge and 8 new Max stations, with ridership estimated ~20,000.

There is also a 16 story student housing apartment building under construction in downtown near Portland State University, 280 units. 900 dorm beds.

Lastly, there is a new homeless center under construction in the northern part of downtown, next to the downtown Amtrak station.

To round out the list, but I don't have photos for, are 2 MAJOR renovations: a lowrise 5(?) story warehouse to be converted to the North American HQ for Vestas; and the renovation of a 20+ story tower downtown (including recladding) for the Feds. Not much has happened at the sites yet besides fencing around the sites and windows getting boarded up, however.

And... gosh, well thats about it. Like many other places, the construction and real estate industry is relatively dead here. Lots of small renovations...

What about the renovation of PGE Field into the new home for the Timbers? And any new streetcar lines?

Right, I missed those. Both under construction!

We don't really have many photos of the work, except these:

This is kinda a big deal in Portland, but is still a few years from completion - they are saying service will start in 2012. I live about 20 blocks away from the tracks (walking distance), but wish it went just a little further.

I don't know about new construction, but i've been wondering about this project:

Quote:
Project Information
Emery & Sons Construction, Inc., a contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation, began work in March 2009 on the OR 217 Modernization project. The total project cost is $42 million with $35.5 million designated for construction. The project will take place on OR 217 from TV Highway to U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) and will include the following elements:

* Adding a third northbound through lane on OR 217 from the TV Highway on-ramp to the Sunset Highway
* Building retaining walls and improving drainage on OR 217
* Paving and striping the project area and all the OR 217/U.S. 26 interchange ramps
* Lengthening the Wilshire Street overpass to accommodate the wider highway
* Improving visibility and safety on the Wilshire Street off-ramp in the OR 217/U.S. 26 interchange
* Restriping OR 217 southbound to add an auxiliary lane from the Wilshire Street on-ramp to the Walker Road off-ramp
* Widening the Walker Road off-ramp from OR 217 northbound.

Once complete, motorists will have three northbound through lanes between TV Highway and the Sunset Highway. The additional northbound lane will help eliminate the weaving that occurs between TV Highway and Walker Road as motorists are simultaneously entering and exiting the highway. In addition, sight distance and safety will be improved when traveling between OR 217 northbound and U.S. 26 eastbound.
does anyone from the area have any info on it? i couldn't find any recent updates, but i'm wondering about how safety and sight distance via the 217. Was 'weaving' a main reason for the lack of sight distance and safety or were there other main factors that caused problems with this, and also, what were some of the main issues via safety at the exit ramps? Confused about these things because i can't find much about the reasons for these on the website, only news that there was a problem and that things are currently progressing.

^ I can't offer much insight other than the project is darn near complete. Drove on 217 yesterday. Retaining walls are up..3rd lane is paved but not yet open. New interchange ramps appear 90% complete as well.

I was just downtown last night and today and I am very impressed.

I walked everywhere downtown and all the old buildings are recladded and the street level is all modernized.

There are a few tall new student housing buildings at PSU near the museum.

A lot of new condos are in the Pearl District that look great.

Park Avenue West has rebar up to the street level. Im not sure if its any improvement from what was last known
